Well, we're gonna have to sack up and beat down Izzo and crew again.
Having four days of rest between games will help
We need time to heal, not just to rest, though. Several vital guys dinged up at the moment.
Why are you so sure they beat Maryland?
Maryland is in the midst of a late-season fade --- they lost at home to PSU last night while blowing a 16-point lead. That late-season fade has become a bit of a staple under Turgeon in recent years.
I think MSU over Maryland is more likely than not. Which would set up matchup #3.
OTOH, Maryland just blew out MSU last weekend.
As did we last Thursday.
I don't have a lot of faith in MSU outside of Breslin. Seems like getting a friendly whistle and being comfortable with the court is a huge component of their recent success. I guess we'll see though.
I'm not sold they beat Maryland. MSU has found ways to beat some teams with garbage outputs but they also lost to this Terps team by 18 recently.
They lost by 19 to Michigan recently, too...
...and they lost to us by 19 recently. Just sayin'.
Take a look at how MSU has played at home vs. on the road though. Breslin has been very friendly to them.
Good, I want revenge.
Just stay healthy...
For the visual people:
Also - this article is relevant to the tournament
Asked about Illinois comments on sharing the title
“I don’t get into that stuff, man,” Howard said after Michigan’s 70-64. “You’re not gonna get any sound-bytes from me or any bulletin board shit, I don’t care about any of that stuff. I just care that we’re Big Ten champs and I’m so proud of our guys for working their butts off since June and grinding. "
Either in this tournament or the NCAA - lets end Illinois
"“I don’t get into that stuff, man,” Howard said..."
I don't buy that for a minute. If (when) we see Illinois in the B1G Championship, Howard is going to make that shit known. There's no doubt in my mind about that...
Of course he will use that to motivate his team, but the next bit he said was most relevant - he's not going to spout off to a reporter and give out any sound bites or bulletin board material. That's not his style.
It didn't seem to make much of a difference the first time they played. If they play ILL its in the championship game, if that isn't enough to get them pumped up those comments aren't going to make a difference.
I'm not mad at Underwood or Ayo for sticking up for their team, but they have no excuses. They lost to Rutgers and Maryland. Those are bad losses for a supposed top 10 team. And they lost at MSU with a fully healthy team.
I'm annoyed because they're not even really sticking up for their team as if they have some legitimate complaint, it's just sour grapes and whining. Michigan played the tougher schedule, didn't play 3 of their easiest games, and still came out on top. Illinois should try losing less games next time
This is exciting--finally seeing Juwan coach a postseason game. Anything can happen!
Please please please please please let Eli and Franz be healthy.
So much of it revolves around Eli's health. I think if we had a few days of practice without him, we can probably beat that 8/9 winner in the BTT but I don't see us making it further than that without him.
The real key is the big dance. We've gotta have him back by the round of 32. Sadly, I just don't see us making the Sweet Sixteen without him. Hoping for the best!
His injury was certainly near a worst case scenario. It became pretty apparent to me that he is the glue that holds this team together. Eli's ability to defend the perimeter and make the offense flow can't be replaced by anyone currently on the bench. If it turns out to be a severe sprain he might not be "right " for a month, in which case Coach Howard will have to get creative in finding ways to solve those issues in his absence.
Fingers crossed that Eli gets back on the court soon, and that this team can get back into a rhythm. Things can get crazy come tournament time, so here's hoping for the best.
I certainly hope he can go but if he can't, Zeb Jackson will at least have more time to get himself ready. It's tough to ask a guy who's played only mop-up minutes to suddenly be in the rotation.
Agree that Eli has been the glue. Maybe, though, it's time to unleash Ivy League Gunslinger Mike Smith. Also, with Zeb and Chauncey splitting nearly full week of reps at the 2, I think we'll be better than we were at Minnesota or in the last 35 minutes yesteday.
Eli's presence was clearly missing. I don't see Watts going off for 20+ points yesterday with Eli in the lineup.
Guarantee they get MSU. Coaching staff better get this team to pull their heads out of their butts. The team can’t come out and put up another Harbaugh special against MSU.
Did I miss the game where UM beat MSU by 19 a couple days ago?
I know that meme going around that UM basketball fans were chill and the football fans weren't just had sampling issues.
Typical MGoBlog tier emotional fragility in downvoting this comment.
Can we please stop losing to our rivals in new and innovative ways, after beating the shit out of them just a few days before?
The injury doesn't excuse the fact that they shot absolutely garbage tier.
Complaining that someone downvoted you is the ultimate in emotional fragility.
It's just a bullshit thing to gripe that a Big Ten champion lost a game when it 1) had much less at stake than its opponent and 2) was shorthanded.
I'd dress you down Mgoarchive but it's obvious that somebody who makes those comments is already a miserable fuck and that is your punishment . Here's a tip: Reevaluate everything.
So pointing out that people get triggered here (downvotes) in that reality isn't congruent with their mental projections is being miserable? Guilty as charged then.
It's not a stretch to say there are warning signs that this team could get bounced early in both tournaments. This team could win it all, but there was an opportunity to impose our will on our opponents and be the clear favorite along with Baylor/Gonzaga. It didn't happen. Now we have question marks that will be answered one way or another this weekend.
Also, I've recorded & streamed games for a decade and worked for the football team for a number of years - what the hell have you done except make comments on a blog?
Eli will be missed, but this team has enough talent and weapons to win without him.
I like this team after a loss....... They play pissed off.... Just ask the opponent we played after each of the first two losses this season.
But in two of the three losses we DIDN'T have Eli. For the next games, we DID. Just sayin'.
Just notices your name - how appropriate for Eli! Either a coincidence or you're some kind of Nostradamus.
I respectfully disagree with this take on Brooks. I think this team has a ceiling of Sweet 16 without Brooks and we definitely do not win the B1G Tournament without him either. He stretches the floor, plays great defense, can drive the ball and score, solid passer. He is a SOLID all around player, that every championship team winning team needs. I love this Michigan team and this season has been great to watch, but this team goes nowhere without Brooks and it's not even debatable, IMO.
More than anything this team has been noted for its balance, so many weapons, so many unselfish players..... not only the blog, but just about every analyst, play by play and color commentator this season..... Now, with the prospect of Brooks being out of the line up.... we're doomed!!!!!!
I ain't buying it. Juwan is probably a good enough coach to be able to adapt his game plan to work without Brooks on the court.
It seems like just yesterday that 1/2 of the participants on this blog lost their mind every time brooks came into the game for Simpson, because he wasn't any good. LOL
It's clear that you and I are going to disagree on this, which is great, I don't really like coming here to always agree with people. We really only play Brown, Davis and Johns off the bench for any reliable (long) minutes. If we are being honest with each other, Davis and Johns only get run when Hunter needs a rest or is in foul trouble, they don't come in with any expectations of blowing the game open. Out of those guys, Brown is the only legit scoring threat. Davis and Johns are both solid contributors, but no coach is worried about either of them putting up 10+ off the bench, which Brown can easily do on any given night. I have confidence in Coach Howard that he can scheme up something to lessen the blow made by Brook's departure. I just think Brook's value can not be underestimated, for you to be like, "it's whatever", while I hope that is the case, should not be the prevailing opinion at this moment. There should be rightful concern that his absence will not be good for Michigan, again, I hope I am wrong. Are we doomed? Remains to be seen, I sure hope we are not. But, if this team wins the B1G tournament and makes it past the Sweet 16 without Brooks, I'll be happy to admit I was wrong. Right now without him, I do not see that happening. Go Blue!
We will know soon enough. IMO there are teams that have one player they can't win without (MSU/winston). My belief is that we have enough talent that Livers, Wagner, Dickson, Smith, Brown...... any two of them stepping up their game, getting hot, etc... make up for missing Brooks, probably does it.
If Smith goes down or gets in early foul trouble, sure that changes everything.
Go Blue
Even without Brooks I think we make the BTT Championship. The way the bench performs is going to be telling as to what expectations should be for the Big Dance. Right now we are looking at a limited but decent backup big in Davis, and inconsistent as all heck Johns at the 3 & 4, and an unproven Zeb. Possibly throw Terrance Williams in there as well.
It is a bummer especially with injuries showing up, that we have what seem to be at least 2 scholarship players that are not even options at this point.
I'm really hoping we see MSU in the QF game, even if a BTT win all but guarantees their inclusion in the big dance; the boys need to avenge yesterday's loss in EL. As for who we would potentially face in the SF game, I really hope we see Purdue again. Their guards/wings don't appear to have the ability to defend the strength(s) of this team. Even with their freshmen renaissance (Ivey and Edey) I still think we hold the massive talent advantage; that should put us through to the Finals. I really hope we don't see OSU in the SF game. Of course, we all would like to see a rematch with Illinois in the Finals, although I am no longer confident we would beat them.
Staee will be a tough game without Eli. This should fool no one. Are they beatable still? Absolutely. But you need someone to (cliche) - step up, and anchor the team. Z showed he is not ready. Nobody else wants to own it. Idk. These decisions need to be solved quickly if Eli can’t go this week.
It really shouldn't be, MSU was running Hoiberg out there in that game, we still have the talent advantage and Zeb is better than Hoiberg. They played like ass yesterday and lost to a bad team.
Having a few days off to recuperate is going to be a big help.
Let's hope everyone is healthy and that Michigan gets a rematch with Staee and DESTROYS THEM to the point that Staee 's Golum like Head coach cries like the lil B!tch that he is
I would like Eli Brooks to be ready for Friday, but I'd really like him to be ready in two Fridays.
MSU beat 3 top-5 (at the time) teams. They may just relax a little thinking they are in the Dance. I won’t be surprised if Maryland beats them again. MSU doesn’t play well away from Breslin. Maryland has big guards and can switch 1-5. Watts isn’t going off on them.
Yep.
MSU has beaten 0 quality teams away from Breslin this season. (And in Breslin they get friendly whistles.)
I kinda expect MSU to lose to Maryland in the BTT. (Interestingly, Turgeon's Maryland has given Izzo's Sparty problems over the years.)
