College Football - Grades for Every D-1 Team
Mates,
This came across my radar, an article listing the major college teams and giving them grades for their respective seasons. The grades were based at least in part on pre-season expectations. A few no-brainers, a few surprises and seems fairly spot on. Among the 'A+' grades were of course Bama, but also Ball St and everybody's favorite, Iowa State.
Other notable B10 grades were:
A: IU, NW, and ohio
B-: Maryland for going 4-3
C+: Wisconsin for also going 4-3
C-: sparty, Neb, and PSU. I didn't know PSU finished 4-5, apparently we kicked off a 5 game win streak for them. Hooray.
D: Michigan

D? Wow, that high?

Oh my God...I...passed! I passed! I got a D! I'm gonna graduate!
I wish we'd known each other, this is a little awkward.

That's why Harbaugh got the extension. He passed the season.

Like a kidney stone.

Never passed it. Had it surgically removed.

The nurses told me there worst than having a baby! My wife doesn't like when I use that one!
January 13th, 2021 at 11:25 AM ^
my exact thought. i'd have given us an 'F'. hopefully next year we'll get an 'A'....

If it's true that U-M prevented the players from accessing the football facilities until August (as I read somewhere recently), then we may have been at a competitive disadvantage this year, because I don't think that was happening everywhere.
I don't know if that's enough to bump us up to a D but it would help to explain some of what we saw.

They must have graded on a curve if we got a D
January 13th, 2021 at 12:47 PM ^
A Gentlemen's D no doubt.
January 13th, 2021 at 11:01 AM ^
Seems about right. We’ll always have Minnesota, even though it turned out they sucked.
January 13th, 2021 at 11:21 AM ^
That, and a triple OT win over Rutgers kept us from an F.
I would have also accepted an incomplete.

At first I thought this said college "basketball". You can imagine my surprise when I saw "Michigan : D".
January 13th, 2021 at 12:14 PM ^
i tried to put the word 'football' in place of 'basketball', to throw people off.
in your defense, in the UP basketball can closely resemble football.

A D is what you give Michigan if you don't want to give anyone an F.
January 13th, 2021 at 11:26 AM ^
the author handed out a few F's. i think we should've gotten one, too.

D??? LOL!! The ticket selling guy got a D. The football team should have been given an F-...
January 13th, 2021 at 8:02 PM ^
Is there actually an F+ & F-? Never really thought about it...
January 13th, 2021 at 11:24 AM ^
I’m not sure how you could give this team anything other than a big, fat resounding F.
The offense completely fell apart after the Minnesota game, and then the defense....well.....we all know what the defense looked like.

D-fense?
January 13th, 2021 at 12:00 PM ^
No. Football definitely didn't have that.
January 13th, 2021 at 12:00 PM ^
D-fenseless
January 13th, 2021 at 11:35 AM ^
D is pretty generous. Feels more like...
January 13th, 2021 at 12:01 PM ^
We should really only get about half a participation award since we didn't actually play half the season.
January 13th, 2021 at 11:58 AM ^
How does Nebraska get a C? They were in year 3 of Scott Frost with little to no progress shown.
January 13th, 2021 at 12:48 PM ^
Considering we were in year 6 and regressing big time, the C for them looks reasonable.
January 13th, 2021 at 1:48 PM ^
Sorry, but I'm not grading on a curve. Their shit-show has nothing to do with our shit-show. All shit-shows can be graded independently. My comment about Nebraska is not meant to imply UM was properly graded.
January 13th, 2021 at 12:48 PM ^
Clearly the author didn't watch much Michigan Football, because that performance with top 20 talent is clearly worth a big, fat F. The author correctly gave us the worst grade in the B1G.
January 13th, 2021 at 1:06 PM ^
Of all the dumb tropes that traditional media outlets pump out, letter grades in sports have to be one of the worst. I just finished a season and can access a bajillion different stats/metrics if I want to dig beyond the one metric that truly counts (W-L record) and I'm supposed to instead pay attention to a subjective letter grade applied by a person who is covering ALL of the teams.
January 13th, 2021 at 1:19 PM ^
It's never a TOTAL failure when you win in triple overtime to Rutgers.....
That said though, "D" is rather generous to me.
January 13th, 2021 at 1:37 PM ^
I think that they meant the Michigan fans were given “The D” for believing we would field a reasonably competitive product.
January 13th, 2021 at 1:48 PM ^
We kicked off a 5 game winning streak for a team that won 4 games? Franklin is one Moorhead/Barkley away from the same results as Harbaugh. It is worse for PSU that the press cuts Franklin so much slack because of that one run they had. PSU, USC and UM have already hit their peaks with their current coaches.
January 13th, 2021 at 2:16 PM ^
Glad we can all come together for once and agree that we should've been given an F.
January 13th, 2021 at 4:39 PM ^
Who’s got it better than us? Enthusiasm unknown to........
