Harbaugh Signs Extension
There you go:
I have confirmed with Jim Harbaugh that his extension with Michigan has been signed.
— Sam Webb (@SamWebb77) January 8, 2021
We'll see what the contract looks like after folks FOIA it. At least now we no longer have to hear about the contract that is perpetually unsigned.
There is no content after the jump.

You're probably my favorite user on this blog.

I have to agree: his schtick is consistent but not overbearing, combined with smart analysis of Michigan issues.

Contract details:
Base salary - $4 million / 5 years
Finish top 3 in Big Ten East - $400 k
Beat OSU - $7 trillion
January 8th, 2021 at 4:10 PM ^
$Pesos, Si?
January 8th, 2021 at 4:13 PM ^
This is similar to my post a few months back, base salary = $0, beat OSU $8M.
January 8th, 2021 at 4:17 PM ^
Hat tip to you, then
I must've internalized it from your comment. Credit to you
January 8th, 2021 at 4:34 PM ^
You were a bit more generous with the payout.
January 9th, 2021 at 9:57 PM ^
this is ... fucking funny.
January 8th, 2021 at 4:03 PM ^
Welp............. I dunno, that's all I got.
January 8th, 2021 at 4:35 PM ^
Beat me to it on the welp.
January 8th, 2021 at 4:04 PM ^
Fine. Seems like Campbell could well be staying another year in Iowa. So we got that going for us.
January 8th, 2021 at 4:17 PM ^
If he has another great year at ISU then UM will not be the only team going after him next year though.
January 8th, 2021 at 5:06 PM ^
And if he doesn't?
January 8th, 2021 at 6:50 PM ^
Then he will be PJ Fleck.
January 8th, 2021 at 5:10 PM ^
But if WE have a great year then Campbell will not be the only coach coming after UM.
Wait, what?
January 9th, 2021 at 4:27 PM ^
Harbaugh is a much better coach... he went awry and away from his true self and now let's see if gets it back. Root for it. I am. He had us close three times now. Sucks didn't get over hump. But he did get the state back and that was a huge achievement, as d'Antonio had them at a true turning point. Now with Cade let's see.
January 10th, 2021 at 9:03 AM ^
How exactly is 3-3 vs State including one of the worst L’s in recent memory to first year Mel Tucker with a HS team getting “the state back”?
Moving forward, I guess we can all optimistically look forward to maybe having an up year where we have a close game with OSU and a coin flip on the MSU game. ?? Leaders and best.
January 8th, 2021 at 4:04 PM ^
Well, this contract situation was handled very questionably, let's hope the program is handled way better going forward, but the whole feeling of it all is a big meh, sigh.
January 8th, 2021 at 4:16 PM ^
The entire season and coaching saga can all be summed up with the picture of the “welp” dog.
January 8th, 2021 at 4:51 PM ^
Not sure how you say that without any actual knowledge of the negotiations.
There are a few bits that leaked out about the timeline, but its not like what happened at Texas with Meyer/Herman. THAT was handled horribly.
If Harbaugh took a 50% reduction in base salary and a reduced buyout as reported, that is pretty damn good. It is not surprising that it took a little longer than some fans unrealisticially thought it should.
January 8th, 2021 at 6:08 PM ^
"If Harbaugh took a 50% reduction in base salary and a reduced buyout as reported, that is pretty damn good."
No it isn't. It's a signal that he's a lame duck and is no different than not signing him to an extension at all.
January 8th, 2021 at 6:57 PM ^
Or maybe it’s a signal that when he was originally signed everyone involved understood he was being paid a huge salary in expectation that he would deliver championships and wins over Ohio State and playoff spots, and those have not materialized, and NO ONE pays someone like Saban if he doesn’t produce like Saban. So while Michigan remains willing to pay him like Saban, that is conditioned on him performing somewhat comparably to Saban. Credit Harbaugh for betting on himself in the deal. Now we will see if it really focuses his mind even more keenly on the job, and whether that focus produces the results we all want.
January 8th, 2021 at 8:38 PM ^
The head coach at the University of Michigan is making less than the coach at Illinois and the same as the coach at Rutgers, quack quack.
January 9th, 2021 at 3:11 PM ^
So Harbaugh should get paid via the name cachet rather than by results on the field?
January 9th, 2021 at 4:28 PM ^
Good. Maybe that'll be the motivation. Bo wasn't the highest paid, either.
January 8th, 2021 at 5:31 PM ^
Well, this contract situation was handled very questionably
The question is how bad.
A month ago this news would’ve had me fuming, much like a loss to OSU 3 years ago. Now I’m completely apathetic to the whole program. Congrats Warde.
January 8th, 2021 at 4:06 PM ^
And so it begins.
January 8th, 2021 at 5:36 PM ^
Hopefully the cooler heads will prepare. Even after all this brouhaha, if Harbaugh starts winning again (which I personally think he will - but not beat OSU) I am guessing this will all die down.
January 8th, 2021 at 4:09 PM ^
I am relatively OK with this...for now. At least the buyout will be smaller.
Not that we have any B1G talent for next year. A surgery recovering Aidan is it on D, maybe Dax shows up? Haskins on O. Bell is great but not really a BIG WR, maybe a QB depending... OLine is a WIP with attritian... why bother. Better be working the JUCO/Transfer Portal ASAP. Suddenly the PWO is more meaninful than ever.
January 8th, 2021 at 4:11 PM ^
That was the dumbest contract situation.
January 9th, 2021 at 12:20 AM ^
Is that the Jackrabbit in Seabreeze ?
January 8th, 2021 at 5:26 PM ^
Agreed. I was hoping they were involved operating at a high level finding a graceful way for Harbaugh to leave /find an NFL job while locking up the next coach while avoiding a media circus.
Now it seems like they were just fumbling through a uninspired contract extension.
Fingers crossed the team plays inspired football next season.
January 8th, 2021 at 5:35 PM ^
Yup. They are exactly what we thought they were.
At least I get to save all that money since his buyout and base contract are lower. What should I buy first? Oh wait, you mean it doesn’t effect me at all? Well damn.
January 8th, 2021 at 8:25 PM ^
We have no idea what really transpired. Seems likely your scenario is reality, but there are some scenarios where this is the best outcome.
January 8th, 2021 at 5:26 PM ^
Were you not following Michigan football when Carr retired?
January 8th, 2021 at 4:12 PM ^
good. let's roll. my prediction is that we will see a more fiery version of JH and that this year will go down as an anomaly. given his career coaching record, this season is far outside the norm.
January 8th, 2021 at 4:16 PM ^
I'm with you. Shit goes bad sometimes, but I am hopeful he will get it together and we will be rolling soon.
January 8th, 2021 at 4:16 PM ^
There's still no QB or DTs nor fast CBs...so not much is going to change in the grand scheme of things.
January 8th, 2021 at 4:18 PM ^
not saying there won't be issues, i'm just saying we're getting off the mat and going to whack some teams.
January 8th, 2021 at 4:22 PM ^
I'm sure northern Illinois is shaking in their boots
Everyone else is licking their chops to pants Michigan like it's 2014 all over again
January 8th, 2021 at 4:56 PM ^
Sounds like you've been drinking skim.
January 8th, 2021 at 7:30 PM ^
Do we not have a 5 star coming in this year? ?
January 9th, 2021 at 4:30 PM ^
Cade got hurt. He looked like a total stud. We have a QB. BELEIVE IT.
January 8th, 2021 at 4:24 PM ^
I'm a glass-half-full guy too. I can't get into the pessimistic negativism camp.
January 8th, 2021 at 4:44 PM ^
Agreed. Let's move forward.
This year we severely underperformed relative to expectations. Next year this probably won't be the case and we may even significantly overachieve.
We will probably(?) still be meh next year, but hopefully this year was the bottom and we will look back at it as an outlier.
January 8th, 2021 at 5:29 PM ^
Underachieved?? This is what you get with 3* dbs, no dt and bad olinemen. Smh Jesus some of you will blame anything other than the people causing the problem
January 8th, 2021 at 5:53 PM ^
Well, they only had 3/5 of those offensive linemen for 2-3 games, so that had something to do with your perception on that front.
They'll have to figure out the DT situation. The corners got better as the year went on; it's telling that toward the end everyone started what the hell was up with the safeties on a lot of long balls because the corners were playing them properly. And as noted before, they took in two top-14 corners who were freshmen this season; there may well be more talent than people think in the secondary if they mature and, again, half of the secondary coaching isn't performed by someone on zoom because he isn't on campus.
