Agreed, there are trainers and medical professionals on the sidelines looking out for possible injuries. The second a player lies motionless on the group for a couple seconds while his teammate is waving for help, trainers should come out.

Especially when the player who was down on the ground gets up and literally shakes his head as if he's trying to shake off the hit.

Popped up?!?! He did exactly the opposite.  Unless you're 95 years old and that is what you consider someone popping up at your age.

That dude had his bell rung and probably had a momentary blackout (the ball dropping out of his hand) and than was trying to regain some semblance of where he was as he stood up.  All of that leads to at least a suspicion of a concussion.

If you watch the video, Lewerke waives off the ref too.  The ref comes in and looks like his going to call a timeout for an injured player but Lewerke waives him off.

Do the refs have any responsibility to see a player take a big hit to the head, be slow enough to get up that you consider calling a timeout but then because he waives you off you don't.

In that scenario if the refs call a timeout for an injured player Lewerke has to come out of the game for a play.  Now does he get a closer look on the sideline or does MSU just "evaluate his symptoms" and since he said he was good they move on.  I don't know...

I'm hoping that what's going on is that MSU knows he was concussed and is treating him appropriately (which would include sitting out this weekend), but they're trying to use some gamesmanship to conceal the fact that they'll be deploying a different quarterback against us.

If not, I am concerned we could have a potentially tragic situation on Saturday.

Michigan may win, or MSU may win, but it seems like in either case Lewerke will be hit hard frequently at the end of both pass plays and quarterback runs.

I hope the former is what is happening, but that would be a devastating  PR move to allow everyone to think you ignored player safety for a whole week up and until Rocky runs out on the field.

But “doing the right thing” versus “doing what must be done to gain an advantage” do not co-exist in East Lansing.

I am quite confident that the game will go on as scheduled and that Brian Lewerke will not die if he plays.

He certainly stayed down long enough for concerns to be raised, and should have been evaluated by the staff before he returned to the game.  It is also possible that he was actually given a symptom assessment after the series and the next day and that he simply did not have a concussion.  This is far from the first time, even in recent years, that a players has taken a bad shot to the head and returned to the game.  I can think of a few times seeing it this year, actually.

I certainly think that Michigan State should comment further on what happened, but I think this tweet is out a bit passed its skis.

In the game before Michigan, PSU's KJ Hamler goes airborne and lands awkwardly on his head.  Comes up shaking his head and walks over to the sideline.  Franklin briefly talks to him and that appears to be the end.  K J Hamler was back in the game very soon thereafter.

I don't know what was said and although the speediness of return to play seems to indicate otherwise, it is possible he was evaluated, but I doubt it.

The refs and perhaps additional observers should have the right to demand a player be evaluated by an independent party before they are allowed back in the game.

I agree with you.  I just think it is also possible that they actually did the symptom assessment and that he simply was not concussed.  Perhaps he just threw a shitty pass.  Lewerke can't hit the broad side of a barn in the first quarter before getting hit at all.

This tweet is alarming, but the guy really was not close to the situation.

This, plus the Blackwell thing, and getting his ass kicked by Michigan is setting up for the perfect shit storm for Mork.

"Oh what a tangled web we weave..."

Dantonio's currently choosing between the following two options:

1.  Stand by your original statement.  Play Lewerke.  Get crushed by Michigan.  Last year coaching at MSU

2.  Admit he had a concussion.  Sit Lewerke.  Get crushed.  Use injury as excuse for loss and live to coach another year.

(I just can't imagine Dantonio loses his job over this if the other behaviours haven't led to his dismissal)

This may not be a popular sentiment on the board but I will be the first to say that I would rather have Michigan lose this game Saturday than for Lewerke to be hit again and as a result suffer serious medical injuries. Obviously I desperately want neither to happen.

The point is, if Michigan believes they are playing a concussed player in a key position (who will likely hit many times during the game), what ethical obligation if any do we have to ensure the game remains safe? Demand he gets evaluated by an unbiased medical professional prior to the game? I know it's on MSU, but they have zero credibility with regards to athlete safety or well-being.

Also there is the Michigan player angle: what if say McGrone does a clean hit on him and the impact of head to ground ends up killing the guy. Horrible, horrible situation and our unpaid player would have to live with that.

Wow.

Guys, Brian Lewerke is not going to die during this game.  MSU released a statement they have to stand behind under penalty of MASSIVE lawsuit, this tweet has heightened the scrutiny as well.  This will get their attention if nothing else has.  If he is concussed, he won't play in the game.

People are starting to get a little weird about this weekend.  It is a heated rivalry.  The teams are going to get after it, but nobody is dying and the fans are not going to blow each other up after the game.  Come on, now.

Certainly wouldn't want to see another player injured, perhaps seriously and with very significant long term impacts.  That being said, Michigan is not responsible for making sure MSU players are only put in the game if they are medically fit.  That is MSU's responsibility.  Michigan is powerless in this situation.

I wouldn't take the L.  This isn't the military, he isn't going to get court marshalled if he doesn't want to or doesn't think he should play because he wasn't properly evaluated.  Also I highly doubt Harbaugh and co are sitting there game planning watching film for MSU desperately trying to determine if BL was concussed.  Michigan has zero ethical obligation to not go after the guy that takes the snap every play, provided he's still holding the ball.  Football is a dangerous game, and frankly 10 years ago this would be a complete non-story.  While the possibility exists something really bad could happen, this stuff (players getting their "bell rung" and going right back in) used the happen all the time so the probability is pretty low.

I’ve thought about this too. Our ethical obligation is to play the game according to the rules, including not attempting to deliberately injure an opposing player. What we “believe” isn’t relevant. We have no ethical obligation to substitute our judgement of Lewerke’s condition for that of the Michigan State coaches and medical staff, who have actually examined him, when we haven’t. Even if they choose to paper over his condition and deliberately play someone that they know or should know is not medically fit, that does not transfer a molecule of responsibility or blame from them to us if something should happen.

Dantonio wants us Michigan fans and the team to believe Lewerke is good to go but it won't surprise me if on game day, he makes the travel squad, maybe warms up for show and than sits the entire game.

I think the Shane Morris situation is viewed a bit differently because Morris was already hurt BEFORE the concussion and never should have been on the field.  Hoke's insistence in playing Morris hurt and with limited mobility led to the vicious head shot he took that concussed him. And Hoke STILL played him.  It was utterly absurd and played into the already established belief that Hoke had incredibly poor awareness of what was going on.  Everyone in Michigan stadium knew Morris shouldn't be out there.  He was getting assistance just to not fall over from other players.  We were down 30-7 in the 4th quarter.  There was no real explanation for Hoke's decision other than gross incompetence.

Yeah, Bellamy couldn't find his helmet.  We had 2 damn time outs left in a game that was over.  Call a freakin' time out and let Garnder stay in.

The Lewerke situation, while probably a screw-up, was not nearly as obvious.

My dad and I have been going to games since the mid 90's, we sit through every single one to the last whistle, regardless of the outcome.  Despite everything we have sat through, I have never been more disappointed or ashamed as when Brady Hoke kept, then put Shane Morris back in.  How he had a job after he left that stadium is a small miracle. I feel awful for Lewerke and Morris in these situations, but Dantonio is walking a fine line right now.

Agreed, I don't think it excuses MSU if proper concussion protocol wasn't followed but Morris already had a injured leg and was essentially a sitting duck for a defense that was teeing off on a bad o-line. Also let's be honest it is also got more attention because nationally MSU just does not generate the interest that UM does.

I know Chris personally.  He is spot on.  I hope Lewerke is doing well. Nevertheless, he absolutely sustained a concussion and absolutely did not go through any semblance of a modern day concussion protocol.

This is how I am leaning.  Particularly because he is on the injury report as having sustained a head/neck injury.  But the question then remains, are they just flat out lying that they evaluated him and he is good to go?  I get that there is injury gamesmanship, but sometimes it is just not available due to the circumstances of the injury.  Really, Mork, you guys are going to shot out of cannon either way.  If the kid is out with a busted dome and everybody is talking about it, probably a good idea to just go ahead and say it now.
