Minnesota isn't the #7 team in college football.
November 10th, 2019 at 1:21 PM ^
Right? They probably belong at 5.
November 10th, 2019 at 1:24 PM ^
Did you watch the game? They looked good to me. Granted, one game season and all but that got UCF into the top 10 in recent years. They have been blasting teams after a rough start. Their next 3 games will be telling. I do expect OSU to beat them something like 59-0 in the BTCG, but I seem to recall Minny playing them tough in recent years.
November 10th, 2019 at 1:32 PM ^
Yes, Minnesota plays OSU well. However, due to the ridiculous crossover scheduling, OSU/Minnesota haven't played much recently.
If OSU wins the East, I would love to see them play Minny. However, each team has 2 tough games to go so who knows.
November 10th, 2019 at 1:36 PM ^
would be a nice match up for tv rating in the BIG 10 Championship if both are undefeated. I would watch that. But Ohio St would probably win by 2 TDs. Not great for a Michigan fan.
At this point I'm hoping for a NY6 Bowl for Michigan.
November 10th, 2019 at 8:28 PM ^
Looking forward to undefeated Minnesota taking on 1-loss osu in the BTCG. If Minnesota wins out - which means they'd beat ranked Wisconsin, Iowa, and osu - they're going to the CFP.
November 11th, 2019 at 8:17 AM ^
True.
I hope they can beat Ohio St.
November 10th, 2019 at 1:25 PM ^
They’re as “#7” as PSU was “#4”.
November 10th, 2019 at 1:25 PM ^
Yea? And PSU wasn’t the 4th best either but Minny is undefeated and it’s hard to put a defeated team above an undefeated team that just beat another “top 5” undefeated team.
The committee did the proper due disrespect and put them at 7. It’s all pointless anyways because if they win the B1G then they’re top 4 and playoff bound.
November 10th, 2019 at 1:33 PM ^
They may not be that good - but a Power 5 team that is 9-0 needs to be in the top 10.
November 10th, 2019 at 1:43 PM ^
I think it’s exactly right. I’m pretty sure they beat the 8th to 10th ranked teams.
November 10th, 2019 at 1:44 PM ^
Okay maybe they're #8 with Oklahoma ahead of them? But Oklahoma's defense has looked terrible for like 3 weeks in a row.
Regardless. We do this every year and every year it's the same answer.
There are 4 or 5 great teams then a noticable gap and the next 15 could really be ranked in any order on any week.
I would feel good about our chances against everyone #7 and below. I wouldn't be surprised one bit if we lost to every team #7 and below. We were blown out by a team in that 7-20 range and we blew out a team in that same range.
It's the same every year.
November 10th, 2019 at 2:01 PM ^
You are right. We do this every year.
No matter who is up there, undefeated or not, beat good teams or not--
Michigan Fan gon hate them up and down the internets and whine about I HOPES WE PLAYZ THEM NOW! WE KILLZ DEM NOW!
November 10th, 2019 at 2:05 PM ^
I'd go further - there are generally 2-3 great teams. The remaining 1-2 playoff teams make it in because they have solid résumés but no one seriously expects them to beat the great teams, and they end up losing by 30 in the semifinal.
Teams 5-10 are basically a crapshoot.
November 10th, 2019 at 2:49 PM ^
Probably not, and PSU was not the fourth best team in America, but Minnesota has kept winning. And in some of their more recent games they’ve looked pretty convincing. Other teams around them have had some bad losses or don’t have that signature win.
November 10th, 2019 at 4:35 PM ^
Minnesota is much better than you think ,they have a bunch of NFL players on their roster
Minnesota is 100% top 5 in the nation in WR and RB depth and no one can argue this, meaning they have as much skill depth as any team in college football.
They put pressure on the QB every snap and take the ball away .So why cant they be as good as they actually are?
November 10th, 2019 at 5:44 PM ^
Because of their ridiculously easy schedule. Their nonconference schedule is a total joke. They don't play OSU or Michigan, and the only team they play with a pulse on the road is Iowa. So, no, they are not the #7 team in the country.
November 10th, 2019 at 6:54 PM ^
Look at how they are beating everyone, they are winning by 30 points with 200 plus rushing yards. Look at the talent on the their roster. They are playing a similar schedule to OSU and wining dominating everyone.
November 10th, 2019 at 9:29 PM ^
Minnesota WR duos might be the best in the conference. Tyler Johnson is being looked at as a potential day 2 pick and isn't the best WR on his own team. That honor belongs to Rashod Bateman who might be the best WR in the conference. He absolutely a potential 1st round WR in 2021 draft.
November 10th, 2019 at 5:25 PM ^
Correct! It's the media hype.
However, the media does need a BIG West team to represent. That way they can hype up the BIG Championship game.
Don't care much for Minnesota though, but if they beat Iowa and Whisky, then they deserve to be there.
November 10th, 2019 at 1:21 PM ^
So they are really going to put at least 2 sec teams in ... unbelievable.
November 10th, 2019 at 1:28 PM ^
I mean this is the coaches' poll so it's basically toilet paper but yeah I assume the top 4 will be the same
November 10th, 2019 at 1:28 PM ^
No, this is the coaches poll.
November 10th, 2019 at 1:29 PM ^
Lol.. this is why we needed a blow out
November 10th, 2019 at 1:30 PM ^
Bama is getting in (even as a 1L 3rd place SEC team) over a 1 loss OSU or Minny and I guess I can’t really argue too much with that.
What about a 1 loss PAC-12 or Big 12 champion? Are they snubbed too for a 1 loss Bama? THAT is crazier to me.
November 10th, 2019 at 1:35 PM ^
If Oregon beats an 11-1 Utah team in the Pac-12 Championship game then they get in over Alabama.
November 10th, 2019 at 3:48 PM ^
It's possible.....
November 10th, 2019 at 1:39 PM ^
Oregon can screw everything up for the SEC. If they win out, their only loss is to Auburn. If Bama wins out, Auburn will be their best win. You can’t keep a PAC 12 champion out with a week one loss and put Bama in — a team that didn’t even win its division. To the extent they cite the Auburn win, it kind of helps Oregon at the same time.
November 10th, 2019 at 5:25 PM ^
Bama can and should be locked out by presumably OSU, Clemson, and LSU get there as undefeated or 1-loss conference champs. Then you may get a 1-loss Pac 12 (Oregon/Utah) or 1-loss Big 12 (OU) champs.
The stupid thing is that if there is ANY reasonable way for the committee to justify putting Bama in at #4. They're going to take it.
November 10th, 2019 at 1:52 PM ^
Uh no, a 1-loss Bama is not getting in over a 1-loss OSU or 1-loss Minnesota B10 Champ.
The only time the committee has ever put in a 1-loss non-conference champ is when the conference champs have 2-losses.
November 10th, 2019 at 2:12 PM ^
Wait until UGA beats LSU in the CCG. There will be three SEC teams in the playoffs.
November 10th, 2019 at 3:07 PM ^
Bama's only chance is if LSU remains #1. If LSU loses, Bama's out.
November 10th, 2019 at 2:17 PM ^
Bama looked like hot ass for most that game and have beaten who exactly? It's bullshit.
November 10th, 2019 at 1:24 PM ^
I hope Indiana can stay ranked until we play them.
November 10th, 2019 at 1:26 PM ^
Indians is beating penn state next week.
November 10th, 2019 at 1:29 PM ^
Now that would be interesting. But it's at Penn St. But I hope so. I'll be watching.
November 10th, 2019 at 5:27 PM ^
And Penix is out right? Not sure this Indiana team is as dangerous anymore
November 10th, 2019 at 1:30 PM ^
That would be something. MN beat up or softened up Penn Sate so it won't be easy for them playing a rested Indiana team.
November 10th, 2019 at 1:44 PM ^
Not with a broken Penix, they're not.
November 10th, 2019 at 2:11 PM ^
I’m just glad they have a huge game the week before we play them. I know placed between MSU and OSU, they are a “trap” game for us, but they just want to beat a blue blood. They don’t care who. I doubt we have to worry about them saving anything for us. It’ll still be a really weird game regardless.
November 10th, 2019 at 1:26 PM ^
I think that's fair. LSU and OSU are easily the top two teams this year. Then I think #3 through #16 are interchangeable depending on the week/location/motivation.
November 10th, 2019 at 1:28 PM ^
Yep and Alabama still has to play Auburn and Georgia. There's still a chance there's not 2 SEC in the playoffs.
November 10th, 2019 at 1:33 PM ^
They don’t play GA.
November 10th, 2019 at 1:27 PM ^
Go look at Bama’ s schedule. It’s a joke. They shouldn’t be in the top 5.
November 10th, 2019 at 1:28 PM ^
That late score allows people to say “see look, it was so close”, when in reality it wasn’t that close.
November 10th, 2019 at 1:34 PM ^
Bama put up a real fight in the 4th quarter. The question to ask would be how good is Bama vs LSU on a neutral field? We know LSU winning on Bama's home field makes them legit and a legit #1.
Bama could still end up a 2 loss team before the regular season is over.
November 10th, 2019 at 1:52 PM ^
They haven’t beaten a ranked team (based on today’s rankings) all year. Their non conference is Duke, Mercer, NMSU and Western Carolina. I mean, I know we get to play Rutgers, so that’s a lot like NMSU, but that’s still Duke and two FCS schools with losing records. Absolutely embarrassing. For all the shit Clemson has been getting about their schedule, at least they scheduled two legit P5 teams (South Carolina and Texas A&M) in their nonconference schedule.
The committee should rank Oregon above Alabama until Bama can beat someone ranked above Indiana. And if either Utah or Oregon runs the table, they will have a better resume as conference champs with a win over a top 10 team.
November 10th, 2019 at 2:03 PM ^
Thank you for posting this. I don't think Minnesota has proven it is playoff-worthy, but so far Minnesota is undefeated and has had a tougher schedule than Alabama.
November 10th, 2019 at 3:49 PM ^
I don't know about that. LSU is #1.
November 10th, 2019 at 2:07 PM ^
Saban would agree with you about their schedule, but to be fair to them, they play their SEC schedule. No one is lining up OOC to play them (Saban's complaint by the way), which is why their OOC schedule is weak.
At the end of the day, that schedule has to factor in. Same with Clemson. They both get way too much credit for the success they have had in the past and that should not factor into the rankings. Each year is "supposed" to be independent of the others and it clearly isn't.
