Defense played great in the 2nd half .Don Brown needs to get more speed on the field at the Safety position if he insists on playing so much man coverage .Not sure why Dax wasn’t getting any PT
October 20th, 2019 at 4:44 PM ^
Defense played great in the 2nd half except when they spectacularly didn't. The long Hamler play and the failure to get a three and out at the end of the game.
It seems to me, anecdotally, that this is something of a trend in big games. Still wondering why we threw out our offense after it scored 39 points on OSU but we lost because the D got shelled for 62.
October 19th, 2019 at 11:13 PM ^
Well we talked down Hamler, we said Iowa is covering him with a lb and Michigan wont do that.
They put their two worst cover dbs on him and he burned them twice deep.
F for Don Brown
October 19th, 2019 at 11:56 PM ^
Don Brown is just too much of a stubborn gambler with some of his defensive schemes. It's like he believes that anybody can check anybody man to man.
I mean, Thomas or Lavert Hill should've been checking Hamler before each snap of the ball.

October 19th, 2019 at 11:17 PM ^
Don Brown’s an idiotic ideologue who despite a MOUNTAIN of evidence that his defense wasn’t working, adjusted away from it to what WAS working, then ridiculously went back to getting burned.
Effing imbecile.
October 19th, 2019 at 11:52 PM ^
Go throw your pyjama bottoms in the washer and be glad the team has your missing intestinal fortitude. Too many wearisome weenies here.
October 20th, 2019 at 1:58 AM ^
Nattering nabobs of wearisome weenie!
October 20th, 2019 at 3:15 PM ^
Deep down I'm worried Don Brown measures success of a D in yards allowed and opponent passer rating instead of points allowed. Statistically it looks like a D that dominated until you look at the scoreboard. 28 points to that offense?
His D is set up to always have the narrative "we dominated them except for a few big plays." Well no shit. If we set up our back 4 in impossible situations we're going to give up those plays. As far as I'm concerned, this loss is as much on Don Brown as anyone else.
October 19th, 2019 at 11:18 PM ^
Well, safeties marking KJ Hamler seems bad. Otherwise it seemed fine? Not great..but fine. I expected worse
October 19th, 2019 at 11:24 PM ^
Not brown’s best game coaching here at Michigan. He put safeties in a position that they couldn’t be successful. That said, they also were dominant at a time they needed to be. He has a lot of proof that they are a better zone team this year, and it sucks that they gave up all touchdowns or they would have won the game.
October 20th, 2019 at 12:26 AM ^
We say that every big game we played. Browns defense works against bad teams. Against good teams he gets burned by putting safties on fast receivers. Here is a hint Brown it doesn’t work. Or we have a team in 3rd and long and play man to man instead of zone. We get torched. Just look at the osu game.
October 20th, 2019 at 12:57 AM ^
Hmm it almost sounds like Michigan beating those teams with inferior talent is more related to talent than Don Brown's brilliance...but let's give him another raise and not take any chances.
October 20th, 2019 at 6:27 AM ^
How many touchdowns versus field-goal attempts against Ohio State last year? Wisconsin this year? Last night? That’s the problem with the brown defense. Too much gambling and not enough keeping the play in front.
Ideologues continue to do what they believe is right. Pragmatists do what is proven to be right. Don Brown showed again his true colors last night. He’s an ideologue.
October 19th, 2019 at 11:23 PM ^
im a huge don brown fan and will remain so - but letting the only guy who can beat you run at safeties all night isnt the best move
October 19th, 2019 at 11:35 PM ^
Isn’t the best move??? It cost us The fucking game.
October 20th, 2019 at 12:26 AM ^
I would put the PI penalty on 3-10 as what cost us the game....
October 19th, 2019 at 11:27 PM ^
D played well the 2nd half. Hill is the only non-CB who should be covering Hamler. I dunno, obviously Don Brown knows zillions more about defense than I do. And yet he elects to play schemes where the secondary is often in a complete athletic mismatch. It was the same thing with our 3rd CB getting killed against OSU last year. At some point, realities of personnel have to factor in.
October 19th, 2019 at 11:27 PM ^
I’m a Don Brown defender but this was kinda shit. You can’t have safeties trying to run man against Hamler. In general betting that college wide receivers and quarterbacks can’t beat man coverage so you can shut down the run is a good bet. But Brown needs to scheme for each team individually. When the team has a meh run game and a transcendent wide out, you need to scheme differently. In that sense, it’s the same issue that came up in a much much bigger way in the OSU game.
October 19th, 2019 at 11:59 PM ^
Brown knows zillions more? PSU has one player and Brown didn’t do a damn thing to take him out of the game. What the fucking hell is Uche doing out in coverage? Why the living fuck do you have the worst safeties to ever play for UM on PSU’s best player ?
October 20th, 2019 at 8:13 AM ^
Weak.
They aren't bad safeties.
They shouldn't be covering Hamler.
Fire Don Brown.
October 20th, 2019 at 10:25 AM ^
Dax should have been on Hamler yet we didn’t see him. This whole veteran bullshit is just that.
October 20th, 2019 at 12:15 AM ^
Browns D really seems to require organic pressure by the DL. When that doesn’t happen, the man to man works way less well.
October 20th, 2019 at 9:38 AM ^
Not exactly. He blitzes a lot.
The problem with the Don Brown defense is how predictable it is at the second level. A lot of stuff happens at the line, blitzes, stunts, etc. If none of your receivers can win one on one battles with defensive backs, you have no chance, which is what we saw against Nebraska last year, Rutgers this year, etc.
But look what happens when a receiving corps can match the secondary athletically. You have a quarterback who knows what is happening at the second level who can throw balls up to receivers who have a chance. It’s what happened at Notre Dame last year where are punts won the game and Michigan couldn’t really hold Notre Dame to field goal attempt. Against Ohio State, what did they have, eight touchdowns and only two field-goal attempts? Wisconsin, 5 TDs and no FG. Last night, four touchdowns and no field goal attempts.
You can win the game as a road underdog if you can hold a team to FG attempts despite getting out gained. Don Brown’s defense doesn’t hold good offenses to field goal attempts when they get past midfield. Something huge to work on.
Quarterbacks get confused all the time by Dan Brown’s blitzes and stunts. They almost never get confused by his coverages. So if the blitzes and the stunts get picked up, or the quarterback throws an arm punt 1.2 seconds after receiving the ball, Don Brown’s strength is neutralized and his weaknesses picked apart.

October 19th, 2019 at 11:30 PM ^
I gave up on Mettilus tonight like he gave up on Hamler. Give Daxton his job. You never give up on coverage.
October 19th, 2019 at 11:31 PM ^
Don Brown blows.
October 20th, 2019 at 12:23 AM ^
Yeah, he started walking before the ball was even caught. He literally got beat by 20 yards as a result. That's embarrassing.
Metellus has been a solid safety for us for the most part, but he gives up on some plays which frustrates the fuck out of you. For someone whose motto is "no excuses," it's not really fitting.
October 19th, 2019 at 11:31 PM ^
Good run defense. Pass defense got mixed up a couple of times and it was costly. They have one receiver and you have to cover him.
October 19th, 2019 at 11:32 PM ^
Well we let Hamler singlehandedly beat us, along with a few boneheaded mistakes. So we were both good and awful on this side of the ball
October 19th, 2019 at 11:32 PM ^
You recruit Dax Hill specifically for this type of game - to cover a KJ Hamler type.
Not sure why he's not out there if you are stuck dead set on covering their dynamic slot receiver man to man.
October 20th, 2019 at 8:26 AM ^
October 19th, 2019 at 11:33 PM ^
Doomed by a slow start and an inexcusable failure to cover KJ Hamler. Seriously, a safety on KJ Hamler? Why wasn't a timeout called? Inexcusable
The defense wasn't awful but it played a role in this loss, the offense doesn't get all the blame for this one
October 19th, 2019 at 11:33 PM ^
What scares me is that Ohio St has a couple of Hamlers. We will enough trouble covering Olave, and then they have Victor, Hill, Mack and Dobbins as well.
October 19th, 2019 at 11:48 PM ^
Buy does anyone in his fam are who is in heir right mind really think we will beat OSU? Lol
October 20th, 2019 at 12:32 AM ^
Right. The season ended tonight. All goals are unobtainable now, unless one of them was to score the least amount of points since the forward pass was invented!
October 20th, 2019 at 10:30 AM ^
TOSU will feast on UM again with their skill players. Buckeye WRs practice against future highly drafted NFL DBs every day. It’s not stretch to say that maybe ONE of Michigan’s defensive secondary guys would be in the regular rotation at corner or safety at TOSU. They got abused last year. More abuse might be on the way. Abuse named Olave, or Wilson, or Victor.
Talent tells. Michigan has a bunch of “plucky” average Big Ten players who haven’t been developed to their fullest potential. The Buckeyes don’t have that problem.
Oh, and you forgot to mention Justin Fields, who can wreck a defense with his legs by extending plays or just running himself. 6’3”, 225, 4.4.
1-10 against ranked teams isn’t a scheme problem. It’s a talent problem. Or lack thereof.
October 19th, 2019 at 11:34 PM ^
We were totally BUTT FUCKED in this game by the officials.
October 20th, 2019 at 12:02 AM ^
We were in the first half, which counts as much as it does in the second half. But nobody cares about calls that give up the first touchdown (even though they should because all points count the same)

PSU is talented. The Defense gave us some chances to get back into and win the game. Wonder if Dax could have covered Hamler. Would have liked to see that tried after the first long TD.

We have one weakness and good teams that can exploit it will exploit it.
I love McGrone, kids a player.
