Question about Jabrill Peppers' career

Submitted by GoBlue419 on August 11th, 2019 at 8:01 PM

This is my 1st post. I've mentioned this many times among non-Michigan fans and casual football fans, but now that I can MGoPost (lol), I've always wanted some opinions from people who actually watch Michigan as thoroughly as I do.

I have always felt that Jabrill Peppers would've been (and currently would be) better utilized as a full time Running Back. To me it always seemed like he made (or could've made) more game changing plays with the ball in his hands than he ever did defensively. His skill set and abilities just fit RB more than S, imo.

His career offensive #s at UM overall weren't incredible (45car 239yds 5.3ypc, 10rec 82yds, 5 rush TDs) but alot of those touches were gadget/gimmicky plays and even so, he had some big plays offensively. We all saw how amazing he was in the return game. I would've loved to see what he could've done with 20 carries a game. Am I wrong for thinking he definitely could've out-produced Deveon Smith(who I love as a player, but still).

I absolutely loved Peppers at UM, but at the end of the day his Michigan career will always be disappointing in my view.

Anyone care to discuss this while we wait for the season to kickoff?

You're talking about Peppers on the brink of the 3rd season since he departed, after playing viper for 1 season (along with many other things).

Hudson is still on the team, about to play solely viper for his 3rd season. He spent his freshman season learning from guess who.

If you want to be disappointed he and Gary never beat OSU while here, that is its own unfair thing. Looking at stats to determine impact is a whole different argument, but you're combining them. I don't believe Hart or Long were on a team that beat OSU either. How do you remember them? There's not much more Peppers could have individually done. Maybe you should place more of your disappointment on the players who recieved the same scholarship as him and didn't do more while playing their 1 position.

Peppers was a Heisman finalist and a 1st round pick.   He gave his all for Michigan and was a very special player.   You do not know more than the coaches, in fact you don’t appear to know more than much of anybody around here.

Never claimed to know more than the coaches. But the coaches haven't won a NC or even been to a B1G Championship game, so they're not perfect either apparently. What you meant to say is "You're not as popular or known around here as most of us are, so your valid opinion will be negged to oblivion and somehow be seen as unreasonable."

Your attitude is probably why you’re getting negged.  Telling peeps they don’t know football or acting like your opinion is somehow more credible than anyone else is begging for a negging.  Don’t cry about it after the fact

I'll point out that the guy who made that comment first told me I don't know anything about football since you missed that part.?

I was respectful in my OP. Never attacked anyone, never said Peppers was bad defensively. Simply stated my opinion and argued my case. Don't care if people neg me, it's just funny how many people got butthurt and attacked me for an incredibly reasonable post/question.

Did he give his all? Never played in a bowl game for Michigan, and was on his phone during the game against FSU. Separately in the biggest moment of the year, he had a chance to put the OSU game away but allowed Samuel to make him look silly. If he makes that  play Michigan wins the Big Ten and makes the playoff.

I agree. He always struck me as a great offensive player. I would have liked to have seen that full time. He was great on defense. Maybe he would have been better with the ball in his hand. We'll never know.

Edit: Not sure why everybody is posting Peppers' defensive accomplishments. I dont see where the OP said Peppers was bad. I remember the MSU game when Jedd threw him out there at receiver. Dantonio used two consecutive timeouts over it. Peppers was over at the sidelines laughing and messing with him. And the next play Peppers took it like 40 yards down to the 1 despite everybody in the place knowing he was getting the ball. (4:21 LINK) He was special. It's okay to wonder what that alternate universe looked like. I believe Peppers himself preferred to play D. This isn't an indictment of the staff or anybody else.

Could be wrong, but I seem to recall someone on staff saying that Peppers would be the best player on the team at a few different postions and that he preferred to play defense.  They basically let him pick.  I don't have a link or anything to back it up, but it's something I think I heard.

Let's just say Jabril made other teams really think about how they were going to play around him. In some ways, that stunted his ability to really shine as we had hoped he would. Unfortunately, we can't change the past. He made his mark here and now we look forward to others to make their mark.

So, you invite a discussion and then get upset with opinions that differ from your own, then turn it from a “What if” musing to a Peppers bashing.

You are the only extreme thing on this post.  If you had just let a discussion flow without trying to force everyone to accept your opinion as gospel, this would all have gone fine.  You came to pick a fight, barely even got one, and just lost your mind anyway.   Go read something and stop writing for a while.  It will do you good.

I think it's a fair question asked in a fair way, even if it's somewhat redundant. One thing I identified during his playing days, he was electric with the ball in his hands, even with less than stellar stats. If he was part of the offense as part of the overall scheme, I think his offensive starts would have been better. When he was in, defenses keyed on him and he had everyone gunning for him... Makes a big difference.

RB's generally have a short shelf life.

at the end of the day his Michigan career will always be disappointing in my view.

Also, not a great look, above. Your first post and you want to criticize one of Michigan's best players of the decade?

Would Peppers have wanted to play RB at UM?  Charles Woodson didn't.

If Peppers was amenable to playing RB, why would that have been the best position for him?  It wasn't for Desmond Howard.

Does good performance in the return game mean Woodson and Howard should have been playing at RB?  That's rather doubtful.

As for production comparisons involving Deveon Smith--I'm thinking that Smith, being bigger, was probably the better choice for running behind a sub-par O-line.

Probably would have been a good RB but the most disappointing part of his time was that there were no wrinkles when he was in on offense in the OSU game in 2016.  Not his fault but the staff could have been more creative than Jabrill keepers each time.

Peppers closed in on the opposing players with the ball so fast. He was great at making open field tackles. He is not being used appropriately on defense in the NFL in my opinion.

Disappointment ?  Dude was awesome at UM - look at the games stats, then PFF stats, then S&P stats.  He was an f-ing Heisman finalist !   Shit post.

Opportunity cost. If you played Peppers as a full-time RB, he's going to be too tired/beat up to contribute significantly on defense. Even if Peppers had proved to be a top-class RB, our 2016 stable of Smith-Evans-Higdon-Isaac was more than capable, and I doubt Peppers would have been significantly more productive than them. Compare that to defense, where his versatility and playmaking ability would not have been easily replaced. Put simply, we would have lost more on defense than we would have gained on offense - and that's assuming that Peppers would have been great at RB.

For the record, I'm not convinced he would have been. His best plays were typically the unconventional ones (jet sweeps, wildcat, wr screens, etc) where he could quickly get in space. It's purely speculative to say he would have replicated that success on traditional handoffs.

Good point on the offense vs defense need. I would say overall his best plays were punt returns. He showed over and over what he could do with the ball in his hands. Definitely a speculative post, with my speculation being that yes, he would've been great at fulltime rb.

Peppers had 1 year with don brown and his defense. He was the most important player on said defense. They were able to do what they wanted mainly because of his presence. Yes he would’ve been great at RB but he just would’ve piled up stats and not necessarily had the same impact overall.

Hudson is great but had a crazy stat game because Minn didn’t block him. Peppers was ALWAYS planned for. Hudson had the luxury of learning the position for an entire year before he played it.

Sure it would’ve been nice if he had more flashy stats but this team hasn’t really forced that many with don brown. They aren’t on the field enough.

His career, like Gary, will always get overlooked by those looking at just numbers. Go Blue.

Or maybe peppers and Gary never lived up to the hype.  Whether they were hurt, changed coordinators, played anchor d end, changed positions, blah, blah, blah. Neither lived up to the hype from what I saw.  I wish them both nothing but the best but I’m not going to sit here and pretend like they were so freakin amazing while they were here they were not. You know what makes good linebackers and dbacks great linebackers and dbacks a ridiculous dline.  To say that he was the focal point is a joke.  The same goes for rbs and qbs.  Unless your name is Barry Sanders you need a great one to be great yourself

I remember listening to Dan Dierdorf during and after a game. I know it was 2015 and I thought it was against Penn State, but Pepper’s rushing numbers were not so great in that game so idk. Anyway, he was convinced that Peppers was going to be moved to full time rb for next year. I just remember him saying they absolutely had to make that move and felt it was surely coming.

I can’t believe anyone could look at Michigan’s recent punt return performance and then say Peppers wasn’t great. He was automatic. Made great choices. Never screwed up.

Nobody since then has been able to be even half that consistent.

I think I would take zero return yards in our punt return game if we could just find another guy like Peppers who never let the ball hit the ground. DPJ might just become great at returning as well, but that drop off from Peppers to freshman DPJ letting balls hit and bounce all over the place was terrifying.

I agree 100% he should have been reggie bush.

I think he preferred CB coming out of high school and Michigan was desperate at the time and probably told him he could play whatever he wanted.
