The despised Blackhawks and NY Rangers leapfrogged them. Honestly the whole process sucks. I can't remember the last time the Wings caught a break.
I obviously get the Hawks but why are the Rangers so "despised?" Is it the fact that we drafted a stud at 17 in the 2007 draft, only for him to die on the bench in a KHL game 16 months later? Or because we got the 16th overall pick in the 2005 draft, despite being tied with three other teams for the best odds in that lottery? Or is it our four Stanley Cup wins, compared to the Wings 11?
It's the NEW YORK on their sweaters. Everyone hates NY teams. Wear it like a badge of pride.
Let's go Yankees! [clap, clap, clap-clap-clap]
"Despised" is only intended for the Blackhawks.
"Moderately disliked" would apply for the Rangers.
What the fucking fuck? Hopefully, this is just a shot at Junior to get the hell on with offering him the franchise to come home.
If they let Yzerman go to NY, Ilitch deserves to watch his team play in empty arenas forever.
I don't know....
Second best defenseman in franchise history gets disabled in a limo accident 8 days after winning the Stanley Cup.
Another top rising defenseman almost dies due to cardiac arrest during a game.
Wings have to make a tough choice free agent choice between two all-star forwards (Franzen and Hossa) and the one they re-sign has career-ending head injuries.
Then there are the free agent signings.....Weiss, Hatcher, Modano, Cujo, Krupp, many others.
Zero top 5 picks since 1990......fall in the draft lottery every year.
4x President's trophy winners in 12 years without winning the Cup......(they probably should have won 5-7 Cups during their '90s-'00s run).
I'm sure there is more. The Wings had a great run but it wasn't due to luck.
Sorry, but as a Rangers fan, I have no sympathy. Having gone to school in Michigan, the wings are a team I support passively, but the current troubles are minor if you consider the long term success of the team. Please do not feel sorry for yourselves. It's like me being a Giants fan complaining to a Jets fan about how bad they have been for 3 years.
Been since at least 2009 when Malkin should have been suspended a game in the finals. Bettman intervened and in Malkin's next game, he had 3 points.
Fucker.

I still hate Penguins and their 2009 victory :(
Yep... totally gifted to Cindy and the Pens.
The pistons are blowing it, the Wings anger me, the Tigers will start losing like crazy, half of our MBB rotation declared for the draft today, OUR PETS HEADS ARE FALLING OFF
Pistons made an amazing comeback! Just have to beat the Knicks tomorrow to clinch the 8th seed.
Saw that. Ish carried them at the end. Good to see them claw back.
that was essentially vs a G-league team, though. They’re going to get swept by the Bucks.
Always better to get swept than be stuck at home watching your envelope get opened.
Well thank god they won those six-straight meaningless games at the end of the year. Those will definitely lift the spirits of Red Wings fans as they watch the best players of this year's draft play for other teams.
I doubt it mattered. Looks like Bettman found a way to make sure the largest market and 3rd largest market get the top 3 picks. Nothing to see here folks.
It didn't matter.
Detroit let Buffalo get ahead of them. Buffalo got the 7th pick. Wings got the 6th.
The OP is non-sensical.
What are you talking about? Detroit finished behind Buffalo in the standings. Detroit had the fourth fewest points and Buffalo had the fifth fewest.
You know who the Red Wings beat out by 2 points? The Devils.
But the winning streak didn't really hurt them, considering NY and Chicago had more points.
Actually it did. Werent we in 3rd before we started the winning streak?
Yes, but they got bumped by teams above them. It's not like they went from 4th to 6th because of meaningless victories. It was just bad luck
Rather get bumped and still remain in the top 5 than bumped out of the top 5.
Did I claim that they went from 4th to 6th because of their six-game winning streak? Nope. You know who finished right behind Detroit in the standings, though? New Jersey.
But New Jersey didn't win the lottery because of their record. They just got lucky. We dropped from 4th to 6th because of sheer misfortune, just like we would've climbed from 4th with good luck.
an obligatory: Fuck the Blackhawks
All the owners in the city of Detroit deserve the bad luck they're having.
Considering what he's done in Tampa, I don't know why they wouldn't be doing absolutely everything to bring him to Detroit as soon as physically possible.
You would think so, but this is not Mr. I running the team anymore. The new bean counters in town might expect a hometown discount.
^^ This * 1,000,000
Mr I. was a billionaire sports fan who took care of the people and his players.
Chris Ilitch is a business man who just looks at the Wings as another asset.
I honestly don’t think Chris has the balls to get rid of holland or develano and bring in yzerman to replace them, or give Stevie a position where he makes the calls. Tbh I want stevie more for him to bring in a new coach over him just running our team. If this team had literally any other coach, they’d be much better.
Yeah, it’s Blashill’s fault. Not the lack of an actual top defenseman, let alone a pair.
Spoiler alert: If/when Yzerman does become the GM, he’s keeping Blashill.
Blashill’s system actually requires the team to have talent on the back end— something this team is sorely in need of. None of Ericsson, Kronwall, DeKeyeser, Green, or Daley are able to play in the top pairing spots. Yzerman’s best attribute as a GM is scouting and piecing together a solid team through drafts(!!), not by simply selecting a coach.
Hmmm not at all suspicious that the NHL desperately needs a strong franchise in all those cities to help boost its ratings...
Nah. If it was a conspiracy you would see the LA Kings win it. People in California won’t follow irrelevant teams.
People in California don't follow championship hockey teams. Yes, the stadiums are full for games but no one is watching them on TV.
Meh. As long as they draft Bowen Byram, I'll survive.
watching that was an entirely unpleasant experience. how far will your team fall in the draft!?
Just a messed up process. Gary Bettman must be proud.
HUGE night for the Rangers! Highest pick in the expansion era! Really important for the rebuild! Now go get Stevie Y or JD as President! Sorry, I'm fucking jacked!
edit: well, this turned into a negbang real quick!
+1 for John Oliver and that NYC pride.
Jack Hughes, come on down!
You sure like them young, don't you, Kate?
This lottery system seems to be broken. One spot cost the Wings the 1 pick ultimately. Howard played every game for weeks when back ups should have been playing. Malpractice from Holland.
One spot cost the Wings the 1 pick ultimately.
How?
Buffalo finished ahead of the Wings and the Wings are one pick better than Buffalo.
I think this is referring the NJ who had the 3rd worst record.
I'll sound like a terrible fan to some, but the late-season winning streak actually upset me some. It's not like the chances of getting the #1 pick are fantastic in the lottery system anyway, but yeah, here's where it definitely doesn't pay off.
It did suck. The Avs has the best chance at #1 and dropped to 4th. At least Cale Maker might be joining the.lm for the playoffs and hopefully have a huge season next year
