OT: Oberon Day
Happy Oberon Day MGoBlog family!
Does anyone have any plans to go to Bell's today or enjoy an Oberon at a local establishment? I live about 10 blocks from Bell's so I'm headed there right after work at 5....or earlier if I come down sick at lunch.

Saugatuck Brewing has a very nice wheat ale called Starburst Wheat.

Saugatuck's neopolitan milk stout is amazing.

Is it seasonal? The website says it's retired...

I don’t know about that, I had it at a beer/ wine tasting.

I do like it, but Starburst Wheat is more like a wheat ipa than an Oberon-style wheat ale. If you don't like big hop flavor, it's probably not for you.

For many years, I felt bad that I was not a beer connoisseur and apparently did not truly appreciate the virtues of a fine beer like Bells Two Hearted. But I don't like it, just like every other IPA I've tried. My palate despises it. It just tastes....bad. I'm done trying to compete with the cool kids' beer drinking club. And don't give me the "you'll acquire the taste" song and dance - why should I waste my money trying to acquire the taste when I'm perfectly happy drinking an Oberon.

How do you like Hopslam?
March 25th, 2019 at 12:11 PM ^
I certainly won't give you the acquire the taste speech. It took me over a year to like IPA and I happened to have acquired the desire for that type of beer. A friend of mine tried getting my to like sipping bourbon with the ball ice cube. That simply tasted like absolute shit. He told me it's an acquired taste. My response was pretty much yours to my comment. I don't want to waste time and money trying to like drinking straight liquor. No liquor by itself tastes good to me. It's fucking disgusting. I'm a beer snob and will stick to that.
IPAs are really the only kind of beer that I won't drink. If I have no beer and the only beer available is an IPA I am not having a beer.

No, but I'm really digging their "Official" beer. It's really good. Drink it from a glass, and it looks like someone cracked an egg in your beer.

Beer should always be drank from a glass if available. Clearly there are times that isn't possible, but I'm always looking for a glass to pour beer into.

And just to be clear, that is a good thing?

Salud!

I drink alcohol to get drunk.

There should be a Smitten Day.
Whenever it returns.
+1 for Smitten. I like rye beers and Smitten was a good one.
Anyone have a tasty rye beer that's available these days? Found a local Chicago rye ale, but it was pretty "meh".
Also, Oberon day may be a weird thing to some, but to me it signals that summertime 4pm on the deck happy hour is just around the corner. Bring on summer!

All beer is good. When it comes down to it, it's not the beer you're drinking, it's who you're drinking it with.

Not true... Not true at all.

I can name so many beers that are terrible. Just about every domestically- and mass produced beer in America is disgusting.
It really just sounds like you don't like beer very much.
Take something you Budweiser or another mass distributed beer. When I drink it, it is not like the best thing I have ever tasted in my life, but I like it. I like the taste of it. Just like I like the taste of other beers with completely different taste, body, flavor, etc.
???
I'm a beer snob. I'd say 9 out of 10 alcoholic drinks I have are beers. It's fine if you like Budweiser. I think that, along with Bud Light, Miller Lite, Coors Light, all that other mass produced shit you see being advertised, is fucking gross.
So you like some beers but not others. Ok I got it.
For me, it has nothing to do with mass produced / distributed beer; but I really don't like the funky flavor of lagers unless that flavor is covered up by a big malty flavor (like a German doppelbock or something). I've had craft American lagers / pilsners and they also taste bad to me.

Have to respectfully disagree, because sometimes, there's nothing better than drinking with nobody.
Example: last summer, after one of those miserably hot & humid stretches, the weather finally broke and cooler temps came in. And that morning, just before 7:00, I sat in my backyard and celebrated with a cold beer. There was nobody else around, unless you count the birds and squirrels. And I sat there and drained that bottle and reveled in both the weather and the solitude.
Might have been the best beer I had all year.
That's great. I'll tell you what. One of my favorite things to do is, after getting home from work on a Friday, is the first sip of beer. I don't drink on work nights. That first sip of ale on a Friday after a work week is amazing.

Well, I live about 120 miles from the brewery, but I will definitely pick some up (at some place much more local) if possible today.

I sure have opinions about the relative merits of different types of fetid starch water.

In college in the late 1990s my friends and I drove to Kalamazoo to pick up kegs when it was released.
Surprised that there aren't more posters in the thread telling us it's not good!
Oberon isn't the best wheat ale out there. It's not even the best brew from Bell's IMO. But it's a Michigan tradition and a damn fine one.
Man, I would love it if Bell's Oberon, and other Bell's products, made it into the LCBO shelves here in Ontario. I search their website every once in a while, and I've never seem them carry anything. We do get Founder's All Day IPA and KSB, which is awesome, but I'd love to have an Oberon on this beautiful spring day.
We won't get it up here until April. In the meantime I'll have to content myself with some Summit Skip Rock Belgian Witbier, which is just perfect for the mild temps this week.
You get Oberon in Russia?
I thought this was in honor of the GOT character! :(
Except his name is Oberyn.
Regardless, he still could use a beer after that fight, amirite?
I thought this was in honor of the Shakespeare character.
Never something I'm aware of until the day of, but I always participate in it. Love an Oberon once and a while, and by Oberon day every year, it's been a while!
Whether it's March Madness, Fat Tuesday, St. Patrick's Day, or Opening Day, we all have that annual "It's almost warm enough to enjoy outside again!" marker. And to me, nothing brings back the taste of summer like an Oberon. So if you hate it, keep that shit to yourself and crack open your favorite drink of summer. Corona, Blue Moon, Bud Light Lime, a margarita, a shandy, or competing wheat ale! Just savior that taste, and dream of that warm weather heading our way!
Drink what you like and don't be an asshole. Leave that to the wine snobs (ducks).
Happy First Real Day of Spring, whether you like Oberon or not.

Cheers! Best post on this thread. Who the heck cares what other people like to drink?
Full disclosure - I do make fun of my wife for drinking Michelob Ultra, though I am proud that I have succeeded in getting her to enjoy the lighter craft brews.
Snobs are insufferable whether they be wine, beer, liquor or any other variety.
Picked up my 6 pack and a big, juicy orange on my lunch...?
At first knowing oberon day was the week after the tournament started hurt. Then I remembered the painful hangovers oberon gives me and I'm ok again.
I'll enjoy an Oberon if I'm in the right mood. The biggest thing to be excited about release day is that warm weather should be right around the corner.
I remember when we were in college we'd go to the Ashley's Sunday midnight release party and then day drink after classes were over Monday.
