Zavier Simpson - Hanger of Banners
2 points (no field goals), 9 rebounds, 10 assists, and 2 points
Simpson had this stat line today. This is the most Zavier Simpson stat line of all time.
Zavier Simpson is an incredibly unique player and an absolute asset to this program. How many banners is he going to raise here before he finishes as a senior? He already has three in his first two years (2 B1G Tourney Championships, Final 4)

So, 4 points?

2 steals, whoops
- would love an edit assist by the moderators!

The total looks smaller that way, lol

He’s one of my all time favorites because he takes the game so personally. Kyrie Irving could come out of the opposing locker room and Id’ feel like that matchup would break even because of Simpson’s defense. That’s hyperbole, but you get the idea.

Don't get me wrong I love Simpson and the attitude he brings but with a stat line like that Irving would destroy him.
I guess I just wish Simpson was a little more consistent with his scoring. He's had 9 games this year with single digit scoring and of those nine 6 were 5 points or less, with one being a 0 (Holy Cross??). I'd be more comfortable with him in the 5-10 point range more consistently.

...and I would +1 you as well.
Simpson is a stud and a defensive savant. He’ll be a liability though unless he gets a LOT better from the stripe, agreed.
December 30th, 2018 at 5:00 PM ^
He was 2/2 from the line today, for the record. Also for the record, he has never been a liability. Nevertheless, these points stand - the free-throw percentage needs to improve.

I love Simpson but I'd actually say it's John Beilein who's the banner-hanger, since he won a bunch from 2012-14 also (and Simpson didn't play a big role in 2017).
In the past seven seasons, the only times we didn't earn banners were the two years where our backcourt was hammered by injuries.

People complain that he’s a liability on the court but I haven’t seen a game that we lost because of his “liability” I would prefer him on the court over any of our PGs. Great defender with some amazing experience u set his belt. Great to have a player like that who will be back for his senior year. His leadership will go a long way. Michigan Basketball has a bright future for the next few years especially with all the talent we have brought in. Gonna be fun to watch

he bricked a bunch of 3s one game, but that still doesn't negate all the other positives he does out there.

For some reason I've been walking around thinking Z was a senior. Thank you God!

I hope our new found defensive intensity can survive him. He's more of a catalyst than people realize.
December 30th, 2018 at 8:19 PM ^
Not many teams have a PG returning from a NC game appearance. He has a lot of experience, which is a huge asset for us.

When Derrick Walton went berserk in the latter half of his senior year in 2017, it felt rather bittersweet knowing it was just a final swan song. It was easy to think we would fall back to treading water again, but while Zavier has filled the void in an entirely different way (stifling on-ball defense vs uber efficiency on the high ball screen offense), it's amazing how effective that style transition has been between the two. Has a chance to be (along with Teske) among the most decorated senior classes in Big Ten history if he finishes right, especially how accomplished he started out his first two years. Could be like the legacy of Wisconsin's 2014-17 class or maybe even MSU's 1998-2001 class if they get a title

Awesome post HT. You are right about all-time legacy options for this class - and to think that the class of 2016 was 6th in the B1G and 31st in the nation (Simpson, Teske, Davis, Ibi Watson).
Who would have predicted that class could potentially be the most successful in B1G play in Michigan history?
