OT: G.O.A.T Actors
Hi everyone, I’m bored and I like hearing everyone’s opinions about random stuff, so here it goes.....
A few weeks ago I did GOAT Movies, then singers. I thought actors would be fun. So, who are your top 3? I may do an actress thread or more like this with different topics if everyone continues to enjoy these threads while we’re all trying to get through the offseason.
The criteria is....
1. They can play different type roles, meaning not just in funny movies...etc.
2. They have starred in movies for at least 10 years.
My 3 in order are 1. Tom Hanks. 2. Denzel. 3. DiCaprio
reminder... I am looking for GOATS not FAVORITE. Denzel would be only one on favorite list for me from what I chose for my GOAT list.
1. Daniel Day Lewis
2. Daniel Day Lewis
3. Daniel Day Lewis
Haha. He is good. I would have him at 6 or 7 though.
Considering his amazing versatility, this is a great choice.
I drink your milkshake. Thftpt Thftpt. I drink it up.
+1. One of my all time favorite movies.
I feel sorta dumb asking, but what movies do you consider his best? I haven't seen a lot of his movies (saw lincoln, which was good but I didn't consider it a masterpiece in any particular way).
My list would be:
Leo
Hanks
Hardy
Unbearable Lightness of Being
Every list about great actors has to start with
Tom Hanks! Then there is a big gap after that. Honestly #2 would probably be Sean Penn, just look at his career and the versatility of many of his roles.
Tom Hardy, Denzel, Robert Duvall. Three eras, three GOATs.
Duvall is top 5 for sure. Hardy is up there....his stock is rising rapidly lol.
Recently binge-watched Peaky Blinders and didn't initially realize Tom Hardy played my favorite character of that series (Alfie Solomons). He stole scenes in that series, similar to Michael K. Williams and Omar's appearances in The Wire. I have become a Tom Hardy fan.
Haven’t even watched that series and Hardy is probably my favorite modern actor. The Drop is amazing, he’s amazing as Bane, Warrior was great, and he outshined Leo in The Revenant which won Leo his Oscar. Hardy just crushes every role he gets.
From his brief appearances in Band of Brothers and Black Hawk Down, through Layer Cake, RocknRolla, Inception, Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy, The Dark Knight Rises, The Drop, Mad Max: Fury Road, Legend, The Revenant and Dunkirk, Tom Hardy never has disappointed me.
Don’t forget Lawless!
Hey, MichiganFan, you nailed it. I'd upvote you but, ya know!
Haha...it’s all good man. DiCaprio was my wildcard... a lot of people probably wouldn’t even have him top 10.
I would, but some of the ones that are considered GOAT are before my time.
Names like Brando, Newman, etc. would probably show up on GOAT actor list, but wouldn't be in my top 10.
Honestly... Brando is overrated imo. Newman is probably around 15.
I don't really have an opinion on Brando. First heard of him when South Park made jokes about NAMBLA. Since then I've only seen parts of Godfather and Apocalypse Now.
Acting and film before, like, 1990 is all shit. Go ahead and @ me, I can take your bad opinions.
Actors had to actually act before 1990. Now it's all CGI, car chases and shoot outs. I will take pre-90 movies any day. I get Animal House, Caddyshack, Spinal Tap, the good Star Wars movies and so many others. You get Office Space (a classic) and some Marky Mark and the Funky Bunch (minus the Funky Bunch) movies. Now get off my lawn.
P.S. Your avatar was much better pre-1990 as Louie DePalma.
+1 for Louie DePalma. His best character by far.
Newman easily my #1.
Pete Postelthwaite
Daniel Day Lewis
Raul Julia
William H Macy
Not my favorites, but VERY talented all. FWIW, I would really strongly disagree with Leo and Tom Hanks and Denzel.
I hear you, it’s all good. Macy is very underrated.
I could be talked into including Gary Oldman
Him and Macy always remind me of each other for some reason.
You can blame Batman for that lol
Gary Oldman in 'Leon the Professional' is one of the GOAT villains.
+1 for Postelthwaite. Very underrated actor imho. RIP
Daniel Day Lewis. Second place isn’t even close.
Bringing up the rear are Pacino, DiCaprio, Nicholson, Hanks, and Farley. Yes, Chris Farley.
Pacino has gotten bad the older he’s gotten imo.
Unpopular opinion alert:
Scarface is overrated.
Agreed!! Too slow and drawn out.
It is a great film if you want to see some over acting.
That's an Oliver Stone movie for you.
That's probably a pretty mainstream opinion now.
I'll say this for Pacino, he wins the greatest OVER-actor award hands down. His crowning achievement was the scene in the movie Heat where he said, "'Cause she got A GREAT ASSSS.... and YOU GOT YOUR HEAD ALL THE WAY UP IT."
Nobody beats that.
Denzel, Tom, and Meryl are waiting for anyone to challenge them.
Meryl is an actress. Gimme your 3rd actor.
True! Totally didn’t think we were specifically doing actors! I thought you were meaning it as a collective term for both.
The ladies now call themselves actors and have for several years. The term “actress” is retired.
I've always thought Jeff Bridges has played a large amount of different, quality roles.
1. DDL
2. Hanks
3. Bridges
I didn’t think of Bridges but you’re right. You ever see “The Vanishing”? That movie has scared me for 25 years.
He was great in 'Hell or High Water' recently.
Agreed! So were Pine and Foster. Foster is very underrated.
Seconded, Foster is stuck in that perpetual supporting role, but the man is damn talented.
He was great in 3:10 to Yuma as well.
Haven't seen this one yet. Gonna check it out.
