Early Enrollees' Jersey Numbers

Submitted by Magnus on

Some of the early enrollees have been posting what jersey numbers they'll be wearing. Here are the ones I've seen so far:

Wilton Speight #19
Drake Harris #14
Michael Ferns #46

Maybe it's because you're old enough to remember that once upon a time, Scott Mitchell was regarded by many Lions fans the same way that Matt Stafford is regarded by many now: as the young gun-slingin' QB who was going to take the Lions to the Super Bowl.

The Lions had Mitchell, multiple-Pro Bowl/All-Pro WR Herman Moore, multiple multiple-Pro Bowl/All-Pro OL Lomas Brown, and of course Barry Sanders. Though the Lions did make the playoffs several times, they never could get over the hump.

As I recall, #19 is rather Remy Hamilton in the annals of Michigan football, and although he wasn't a QB, that puts Speight certainly in good historic company, I would think. I would agree though, Speight is one of the incoming recruits that I am most interested in seeing from a developmental standpoint and especially now with the prospect of some time under Doug Nussmeier.

this. I absolutely loathe the legacy jersey idea, let alone the implementation. I was at UTL2 and during the 12 hour tailgate, I'd heard/seen rumors about our uniforms. I'd seen a small pic of our helmets with the wings lined in chrome. I'd heard we were going to wear a helmet that looked like leather with painted/stitched on wings, etc. Many more rumors. OUT OF ALL OF THE THINGS I HEARD, the rumor of Gardner getting Harmon's 98 seemed the least possible in my mind. It seemed insane compared to "brown leather looking helmets with some sort of wings on them". When confirmed, I made my mind up that NO NUMBER should be held to any special standard at UM anymore. No more "best WR that reaches apparently now impossible Michigan Man status" getting #1. No more (did we ever?) holding back #2 for the DB equivalent to the WR. No patches for legends if wearing #21, etc. This all just needs to stop. If a recruit requests 1, 2, 7, 10, 12, 21, etc due to a player that liked than by all means go for it. Once here, if not in use or a player wants to trade on of them numbers, go for it. I just think this treating of jersey numbers at UM went from "I guess that's fine with WRs & #1" to "WHAT THE FLYING FUUUU ARE WE DOING?!?". As if Devin didn't have enough pressure, let's give him a universally deemed retired number of maybe our best player ever.....that is #98.....as Devin is a QB......that had started all of 6-7 games until then.....lol. It's just insane and needs to stop. As am I and also need to stop Swype typing and go. ha. JMHO

Agreed, and the next time that I feel comfortable seeing Furman in our defensive backfield would be the first, but we have serious questions at safety next year and Furman is one guy who has played a decent amount of football here.  I'd be happier with him on our roster than off of it.

I feel like I saw somewhere that Canteen was gonna get #17, but I have no idea where I think I saw that. So this post is irrelevant.

I'm looking at our depth chart by class.  Good God, our WRs.  The players with the most time in the program are Chesson and Darboh as RS Sophs.  Same with the tackles.  Magnuson and Braden are now the leaders of the tackles.

WR, OT, and DT have no upperclassmen going into next year.

Well I think you can count Funchess as a WR, and what about Pipkins?  Also, is there really a difference between a RS Soph and a junior?  Three years is three years regardless of whether they are technically upperclassmen.
