What do you need to see tonight to feel good/optimistic/relieved?

Submitted by justingoblue on

What say you, MGoBoard? What needs to happen in eight (!!!) hours to bring the season to a close on a positive note? Morris going HAM? OL looking good? Da'Shawn Hand announcing he committed to the wrong school? X or Y oz's of beer consumed? What do you want to see before 240 days of darkness descends upon us?

I will watch because it is Michigan football. I have no optimism or pessimism about the game or the future of the program. Nothing could make me feel better or worse about the standing of things. It's a strange place to be.

What I want to see is Michigan football one more time before next fall.

And there it is: your moment of zen.

I just don't want to see any regression from the running backs and the offensive line, and it would be nice to see a decent run defense after what Carlos Hyde did. I don't think a close-ish loss would be particularly embarrassing since Gardner is sidelined, and I don't see Michigan getting blown out. Basically, if this game stays close, I'll be at about the same comfort level as I am now: optimistic but wary.

I would like to see either green or smith have a very strong game - like over 5 per carry - breaking tackles and showing good vision. I would also like to see the interior of the line show that they are improving both technically and as a unit. As for Morris, I am not looking for Tom Brady or even John Navarre. I jus want him to show that he can chandler pressure, move the pocket when necessary, not panic and make throws when they present themselves. He is a freshman, so I just want to see that he has the potential in live game experience to be a good qb in 2 years.

As a bonus, it would be nice to see Chesson show that he can translate his track speed to football. He has potential, so a glimpse that he is starting to realize it would be encouraging.

I think Chesson has already shown that his speed translates to football. He has beaten the defense deep several times this year, but he adjusted poorly early in the year, got overthrown at least once, and wasn't targeted at other times despite beating his man. I just think Gardner has better chemistry with Funchess and Gallon, who are both more experienced and a little more natural receivers. If/when Chesson takes some of Gallon's targets next year, I think people will be pleased.

I think that your post highlights what I am looking for. You are correct that Chesson has often beaten his man deep. He definitely has the speed. But, as you noted, there have been a number of balls that he hasn't properly adjusted to, and he still has to develop a trust / confidence / consistency with his qb. These are the things that I am looking for. Better adjustments, some better chemistry with the qb.

I suppose that, for me anyway, just knowing that some of the elements of the future that are with the team now are looking like they are learning and getting ready to do good things. By that, I mean a nice performance from Morris and some significant contributions from our younger RBs, perhaps throwing a good showing by the interior offensive line. I don't have a long wish list of things for a bowl game, but above everything perhaps, a win would be nice just so we can end the season on a good note.

A win and nothing less. But I expect the absolute worst since it's 2013. Maybe Michigan can pull off a fluky win. Who knows. I just want to get today over with and put this shit season behind us.

just seeing a functional O-Line and some good runs from Smith and Green.

Morris looking good enough at times to think he could be the guy next year if Devin is injured.

A defense that tackles in the open field.

Even a close loss, say 32-28 like last year, isn't the end of the world if I see we have a lot of good to look forward to next year and in '15.

We'll have something like 9 starters back on D next year, and 8 on offense if you consider Green/Smith our RB starters.

I won't have much patience if I see the same kind of offense that played in the 2nd half vs. Sparty.

p.s. I think we all understand Al is back regardless.

Talked to some K-State fans at the parade this morning who say the prevailing view from their side is that they just hope they can stay close and not embarrass themselves...

all the M fans in the stands cheering everything Michigan... the team, the band, the cheerleaders and dance team... and not have to listen to a bunch of whiny fans criticizing the play calling all night.

into work tonight and won't be returning until well into the Witching Brew hour.  I'll be anxious as a cat in a rocking chair factory until I hear the garage door open announcing her return.

some games this season where the offense showed some real life. I am not sure I can think of as many games when the defense showed up in the same way. That's what I'd like to see tonight....a dominant, from start to finish, defensive performance.

Offense: No turnovers, solid play by the O-line.

Defense: less than 20 points allowed, solid pass rush.

I'm confident we'll see these 4 things. If we don't, then I'll just pretend this season never happened, and I'll go into 2014 confident anyway.

would love to see

  • a win
  • signs of continued player development from the extra weeks of practice/time to heal
  • a coherent & productive 4 quarter offensive gameplan from Al
  • the OL succesfully stopping the blitzes &
  • to see shane settle down quickly and get some early passes in to build confidence

how to measure continued player development is hard to describe, for me its more of a 'you know it when you see it' ...

I heard the announcer mention during the nd/rutgers game that if ND won (which they did) michigan has to win tonight to keep claim on being #1 in the all-time winning percentage stat.. i knew ND were close but wasnt aware it was that close - makes a win tonight even more important IMO.

Lewan not getting in a fight, not being thrown out of the game and not flipping off the crowd as he departs the field. Actually, an offensive game plan that seems to make sense would do it for me.

For me, it's almost all on the O-Line.

Competency from the offensive line, create same lanes for the running game after performing well against a very good OSU front 7.

Give Shane some time to survey the field, make good decisions and get his confidence going. Not saying he doesn't have confidence, but having confidence in practice and confidence in a game are two very different things. He's just a freshman at the end of the day.

I'd like to say pressure from the D-Line, but if we haven't seen it by now, I'm not banking on seeing it at all until (hopefully) next year.

Lastly, I'm not expecting Shane to win this game for us. I expect him to play like a freshman. But I'd like to see him make some good throws and, most of all, be smart with the football. And I know he's got a cannon for an arm. Hopefully if we're lucky tonight, we'll see him put the deep ball to good use. I'm hoping to see Shane's swag that we've all been hearing about for the past two years.

In a perfect world, I'd like to see the O Line open some holes and keep Shane upright.  I'd like to see Borges make some interesting play calls that take advantage of personel.  I'd like to see Smith and Green get the vast majority of the carries, hit holes hard, and break tackles.  I'd like to see Chesson show the talent he keeps hinting at and catch a few over the top.  I'd like to see the D play aggressive at all positions and get pressure on the QB.  I'd like to see one last game of ridiculousness from Gallon.   And above all, I'd like to see the seniors go out with a win.

However, this is not a perfect world, so I'll settle for no injuries and for the team to play like a division 1 team (that is, not 0.9 ypc, not 7 for 28 with three picks, not have every third play for negative yards).  Win or lose, I just want to see a good showing from them, so I don't head to the offseason with any added misery.

If the line gives Shane any semblance of time to throw I'll feel good. If we can run I'll feel better. If Borges doesn't shit the bed completely I'll sink further into the state of delusion (feel relieved) that says he's an OK OC when we can run the rock.

Offense:

-Line allowing QB time in the pocket

-Established running game

-Sustained drives.

-Shane Morris showing confidence

Defense:

-Removing big plays

-Getting off the field on 3rd & longs

-Ability to get to the QB

Both: Win T/O battle

Hopefully it won't be necessary......if we are behind with less than a minute to go I would like the control room at BWW to set off the sprinklers and send the game to OT.

Shane playing well enough to become the favorite for the Heisman next year would be nice too

Some signs of a a natural pass rush from the DL

LB's making quick reads and making some plays near the line of scrimmage.  Keeping contain will be a big key to winning.

a competent running game that includes the OL opening up holes and the RB's hitting said holes and then either breaking a tackle or two or making the first guy miss here and there.

A somewhat creative offensive game plan.

I would also like to see Dymonte Thomas blitz.  This isn't really something that will make me feel relieved or opptimistic on a macro level but he will hopefully be a defensive playmaker and I would like to see him unleashed a bit in the bowl game even if its in a one dimensional manner.

Signs that the future will be better than the past. 7 Lineman blocking, 6 receivers catching, 5 running backs. 4 cornerbacks, 3 tight ends, 2 linebackers and a quarterback to help us next year!
