is actually right at the moment. We shouldn't be ranked. If we actually did the "Don't release polls till week 5 or 6", I'm not sure we'd be in there. However, we are still 4-0 which I suppose counts for something

While UConn is bad-mouthed after losing to FCS Towson and then to Maryland, maybe they aren't as bad as advertised. Towson is now 4-0, the same as Maryland, who is now ranked No. 28 in the polls. I'm wondering: Did UConn just have a bad game against Towson, maybe overlooking them, to lose that game, and their loss to Maryland is not a bad loss? When Michigan gives the opponent 4 critical turnovers in a game including a gimme touchdown to a fire them up on their home field, it is sometimes difficult to right the ship in mid-course of a game. Fortunately they did enough to win the game.

Better opposition?? You couldn't possibly be more wrong. Florida A&M, Savannah St., Beth Cookman, FIU, and Idaho St. are all way worse than UCONN. Its not even close.

Massey Power ratings (NCAA rank in parens) going into the weekend:
- Bethune-Cookman 37.42 (127)
- Connecticut 36.91 (133)
- Florida International 27.87 (194)
- Florida A&M 15.23 (295)
- Idaho State 12.51 (325)
- Savannah State 4.95 (401)
Akron's 2 points worse than UConn, if anyone's wondering (of course that's with the benefit of the performance against Michigan, which Connecticut hasn't been credited with yet).

UCLA seems to low to me. I think they should be in front of the one loss SEC contingent and OK St. as well.

That's actually better than I expected.
Everyone, brace yourselves for a 7-5 season!

Who cares about the rankings? They are only relevant if you are in the hunt for the National Championship. We will be lucky to be in the hunt for the Legends Championship.

I'm still on the "fire Borges" bandwagon. I can't stand that dude's play-calling. That fucking ego either.

September 22nd, 2013 at 2:12 PM ^
We came back from being down 14 late in the 3rd quarter on the road against a team that was playing pretty well against us and had a lot of momentum. I can't remember the last time we did that, but I think that people are discounting how tough that is to do.
Meanwhile, we had a lot of inexperienced guys (in many cases playing in their first road game) who made critical mistakes, like Da'Mario Jones touching the punt by accident for the TO, Bolden missed his coverage on the TE on the first TD (according to chris speilman), Jourdan Lewis (?) unsportsmanlike conduct that wiped out the huge Dileo punt return and Devin Gardner with the butt-fumble and the failed 4th down conversion fumble. You'd like better, but at least now they know they can overcome adversity.
September 22nd, 2013 at 2:19 PM ^
And on a side note, I don't think this team is bad at all. We have the potential to be very special. We're just playing bad. In part Devin's confidence, the middle of the O-line, and Borges, the latter of which is our real problem.
Also, I was surprised and angered that Braden and/or Bryant were substituted in at LG. I still think Bryant gives us a better chance at winning simply because he's much better in the run than Glasgow. Be good when we finally get Kugler in at C as well though he's unproven. Borges has an ego the size of Montana and it's making me angry as fuck.
September 22nd, 2013 at 2:41 PM ^
At the very least, I think Baylor should be ahead of us.

that this is a VERY average team that is just a few plays from being 2-2 with losses to a couple of very bad teams.
Stop making excuses for Hoke. He has not had this team prepared for what EVERYONE here thought would be a couple of big time blowouts. When we looked at this schedule in the pre-season we ALL had us winning these games by 30-40-even 50 points.
This team is not good at any one thing. Not defense....not offense...not line play...not running backs...not receiving...not kicking (punting)...not play calling.
Either we have vastly over-rated players or vastly over-rated coaches. I tend to think its coaching. I see very little improvment in any area.
September 22nd, 2013 at 3:57 PM ^
Chill out a bit. Talk about overreacting.
September 22nd, 2013 at 5:19 PM ^
I'll be honest; I've wondered about the quality of coaching since the Notre Dame game.
Borges needs to get Gardner off his "third play" high. With two defenders in your face, you can't always get the third play. Deal with it, and take the sack.
When Denard was here, Borges knew he needed fundamentals work. But they seem to have taken the fundamentals for granted with this offense.
Actually, sometimes it looks more like sheer athleticism is the only thing that bails us out. When Gardner runs in for a touchdown after making an adjustment that sparked Hoke to try and call time out, it looks more like Gardner is a smart athlete and Hoke--shrugging aside--is not making the right assessments. Possibly no touchdown if Hoke succeeded in getting his call.
The only big coaching name worth his salts right now is Mattison. Mattison's players took a week of practice and bounced back. Mattison identified what Borges seems unable to have identified: The problem is that we're trying to perform on a higher level when we don't have the fundamentals down. We can't say the same for the offense that we can say for the defense.
If Borges and Hoke look back and work on fundamentals like Mattison did, then we'll be in much better places in the coming weeks. But if they don't, then we're gonna be in trouble again.
September 22nd, 2013 at 6:01 PM ^
Hoke wasn't trying to call a TO for the adjustment; he said afterwards the adjustment was correct but he thought they were going to run out of time.
September 22nd, 2013 at 6:07 PM ^
"This team is not good at any one thing. Not defense....not offense...not line play...not running backs...not receiving...not kicking (punting)...not play calling."
Just because I am a nosy bugger, from a statistical standpoint, please define "good" for each of these, if you would be so kind. I am intrigued by this statement.
September 23rd, 2013 at 1:07 AM ^
but if you honestly think we are "good" at any of those things....i think its YOU that needs to do some explaining.
The simple fact is....if you are impressed by any of those areas i mentioned....carry on.
You are in an extreme minority and the very definition of a slappie.

mean nothing, squat, ditto! Michigan found a way to win last night. Michigan is finding ways to close out teams this year, last year we lost those games. The bye-week came at the right time for us. MICHIGAN will get this right.
September 22nd, 2013 at 3:29 PM ^
anyone that points out the incredibly obvious is a negative nellie.
Stop living in la-la land. Wed are not good despite being 4-0. Thats the cold hard truth.
I love drinking the kool-aid of being fabulous just because its MICHIGAN.
If it was MSU or Ohio that did this exact same thing with the same 2 teams the slappies on here would be crowing about how pitiful and lousy they were. But...because its Michigan we are supposed to make any and every excuse we can about being young and whatever, blah blah blah...
All we heard last week from the players and coaches and the posters on here was how we were going to correct the "hang-over" effect coming off the ND game that we suffered against Akron.
Now all we are hearing is we just need this bye-week to correct it all. Well guess what....after the week off we start to play the REALLY big boys. If we play like we have the last 2 weeks....its not going to be pretty.
I love my Wolverines as much as anyone alive. Just dont try to get me to live in your world of denial.
It is what it is....

September 22nd, 2013 at 3:38 PM ^
Im ok with where we are at...I know that last 2 weeks have been difficult to watch but the bottom line is they are 4-0..Including a win over Notre Dame....UCONN played VERY well last night and we were pretty bad However we stormed back and WON...two weeks in a row the defense won the game for us...Ill take that.....Now we can rest. prepare for B10..work out the kinks and get healthy .... Have you people seen whats going on? its called Parity...FCS teams are beating FBS teams way more frequently and are very competitive in many others...UCONN is only 2yrs removed from a BCS appearnce..its not like this was App St....a win is a win is a won and were 4-0...
September 22nd, 2013 at 4:03 PM ^
Which game were you watching? UCONN got a whole 47 yards rushing and just 206 overall. We gifted them 14 of the 21 points they scored.
Yes, I will take the 4-0 over 2-2 any day, so don't bother asking. But there are at least 3 other teams in the B1G playing MUCH better than we are, and perhaps another 2-3 playing at least as well as are.
We could be in for another long, long season if Hoke & Co. don't come up with some answers.

Couldn't agree more. Two very flukey plays that went UConn's way are the only thing that stopped us from winning 31-7 or something similar, and that's with Gardner's passing game not so hot last night.
