B1G adds Holiday, Kraft bowls
Looks like sparty and ohio fans can make their hotel reservations before the season starts. That's good for them.
Would it be called the "Kraft Dinner" Bowl if it were played in Canada? And would it come with that funky powdered cheese?
I need a ruling here from ClarkieFromCanada...
You mean for this reason????
I only eat Velveeta when I have some Ro-Tel that I need to use up.
I only eat it if I have a queso emergency.
I will be at this years Holiday Bowl. It would have been good to see a B1G team play.
May UM never visit either of these two fine bowls.
Gee, wonder why, Wolv, just a quick jaunt down I-5. /s
Personally, I’d like it better than the Kraft Bowl. Football in December/January can get windy, wet and cold up here. Although when it moves to Santa Clara it should be warmer, but less to do than San Francisco.
So probably not a bad time to drive down here.
Somehow there ia always traffic arounf Oceanside.
fans are angry? never understood why the aztecs didn't have a better following.
playing at 'the murph' (qualcomm) is pretty cool, and watching a game there isn't so bad either. historically the holiday bowl has had some of the wildest and best bowl games, particularly when the big ten was involved. i think iowa and penn state both played in some pretty high scoring thrillers there, at least one of which (byu/psu) i attended.
Great... Two more bowls that the Big Ten probably won't fill year in and year out.
But nobody else would either.
I want Michigan to play in the BCS Playoffs or Rose Bowl but I would rather travel to San Diego than Tampa or Orlando to watch a bowl game. Hopefully, the Holiday Bowl will arrange a compelling matchup to go along with the great travel destination.
to that it is a bowl against Not-the-SEC and it gets even better. Not that I think the Big Ten is or should be scared of the SEC, but let's be honest, I think that a middle of the road bowl against a PAC-10 foe will be a breath of fresh air when compared to DEATH MATCHES with South Carolina. I really like the addition of the Holiday Bowl.
we take sucker teams and put em through a strainer, like macaroni cause the shit looks cheesy, watch how its done boy, it looks easy...
Michigan has played in the Holiday Bowl twice and is 1-1. I'll never forget BYU eking out the win over the worst Bo coached team ever and being proclaimed national champion. To this day, whenever the subject of that BYU team comes up, a discussion ensues about their not having played anybody on their easy schedule, then someone else mentions Michigan, not realizing Michigan went 6-6 that year.
Started with a win over defending national champion Miami (YTM), so it was by no means a foregone conclusion that the season would nearly be a lost cause.
Jim Harbaugh was in his first year as the starting QB and broke his arm against Sparty. From that point on, the team lost more games than it won, going 3-4 the rest of the way, including a 26-0 shellacking from the Hawkeyes at Kinnick Stadium.
I know that the Big Ten has decided that it will no long give the bowls themselves complete autonomy in selecting teams, which probably means that there won't be a set selection order and they will try to rotate teams in and out of various regions. This would be the solution to the "bowl fatigue" that the conference discussed at length in May meetings.
According to the San Francisco Examiner, however, the Fight Hunger Bowl will not have the 4th selection from the Pac-12 after any bid to the playoff, up two spots from the sixth selection before. Right now, I think the Holiday Bowl gets the Pac-12 #3, so there could be some interesting matchups in this one going forward.
that we didn't already have the Kraft bowl in the B1G slate. In 2011 when 6-7 UCLA and 6-6 Illinois played each other, it was in the Kraft bowl, so I thought that was part of our bowl lineup until today. Didn't realize that Illinois was filling in as an at-large team. It'll be nice for the B1G to get out of Florida for a bowl game regularly, I just hope it's not Michigan ever playing there.
What is the future of the Holiday Bowl? I like the idea of going to San Diego and having another game in California, but Qualcomm Stadium is almost 50 years old and there has been a lot of talk about the Chargers leaving for LA.
Once the Kraft Bowl moves to the new stadium in Santa Clara I bet they make a push to become a more prestigious bowl with better matchups. And when people see the stadium compared to Qualcomm it will not be so far-fetched. Though San Diego is certainly nicer than the Bay Area at that time of year.
