OT - ND paid Charlie more than Brian Kelly in 2012
LOL - Returning to glory has a price!
Looking past the comedy of paying a former coach more than your more successful current coach for a moment, just what are those numbers associated with Weis's contract? Jesus, what was ND thinking when they put that thing together?
That's his definitive schematic advantage.
what was ND thinking when they put that thing together?
When ND made the contract, Weis had a modicum of success, had gone to two BCS bowls in two years. I'm pretty sure ND was expecting him to bring 1,000,000 national championships every year for the next 1,000,000 years. That's what they were thinking.
They gave Weis his new contract during his first season, after they almost beat USC. At the time he signed his new deal, they were 5-2.
But it probably wasn't going 2-3 against Michigan and Michigan State.
Michigan pays Hoke a base salary of $300,000 with total compensation at $2.2m, so it stands to reason that Kelly is making a significant amount more than what ND reports as his base salary. I'm sure the sports networks and Adidas pay Kelly right about what they pay Hoke, which is where most of the money in a coaches contract comes from anyway.
Yeah, but this is not the place for that. This is very clearly a make fun of Charlie Weis thread.
FUPA.
I have heard otherwise about Weis being a good guy. The rumor amongst contractors in SW Michigan at the time was that Charlie didn't pay the guy who custom built his house in South Bend, and the guy ended up killing himself because he lost so much money on the project. Two sides to every story, etc. but take it FWIW.
Really? This is what this site has come to? Did this guy know he could sue? Comon now, no one could possibly believe that story.
I made it perfectly clear that what I was saying was a rumor, I disclosed the general source of the rumor, and I acknowledged that more facts would obviously be needed in order to state anything with veracity. I see nothing wrong with that.
He apparently has a daughter who is autistic and has special needs. I felt bad about making fun of him when I read that.
I went to the ND game in 2006 and domers everywhere were wearing t shirts that proudly proclaimed "Rockne, Parseghian, Holtz & Weiss"
Before we stomped their guts out that day they truly thought they had the next great ND coach at the helm. That's why they overpaid him.
And Woodley. Oh so much Woodley.
Those shirts are probably in the same place my ''May the Forcier Be With You'' shirt is--goodwill.
Front Butt is making BANK.
Weis can buy his very own Golden Corral with that kind of money.
But the buffet would only be all chocolate fountains all the time
So, if the payments for Weis' buyout are going to sit around $2 million or so and he makes about $2.5 million at Kansas (from what I can find), that would mean two schools paid Weis well over $4 million to go 1-11 at Kansas last year.
As I recall, Weis had barely had a chance to sit down in South Bend when they extended his six-year deal to a ten-year deal, hence the 2015 end date for these payments. The extension alone was worth nearly $40 million, I believe. Part of the schematic advantage must have been getting what turned out to be something of a golden parachute up front before he even had a chance to rack up 3-9 and 6-6 seasons.
On a somewhat related note, I am sure that whoever wrote "The New Gold Standard", which was a book about how Weis was supposed to be the one to return ND to glory, feels very confident in future sales of their psychological thriller, as this is what the book must now be.
I screamed NOOOOOOOOOOOOO when I heard about that extension they signed him to. I have a lot more confidence in Kelly than I did Weis. Weis suffered from the same disease that ultimately ended RichRod. Lack of a real defense.
ND is probably thinking they would have paid Weis even more to stay away.
