Friday Night Hockey, Beer, and General Drunken Foolishness Thread
Should be a good start to this weekend series. I took the plunge and got the premium Fox channels after buying a new TV yesterday, so I'm excited to see the game in HD and not just sitting on my lap.
As far as liquid diets go, I have a Hopslam or two budgeted for tonight, so I'm pretty excited for that as well. Let's share a good night with some hockey and some beer, capped off by a big M win.

Remember to vote for Coach Beilein. Neck and neck with Thad Matta.

Vote everyday.

Thanks for the reminder. Beilein's in white, which I'm assuming means he's at least leading, but it's <1%.

There was clearly movement to make that hit on Hunwick. Refs made the right call.
February 3rd, 2012 at 8:54 PM ^
You're up by three, don't take dumb penalties and give them a shot to get back into it.
February 3rd, 2012 at 9:00 PM ^
Damn, I just put a mattress and boxspring set on Craigslist and I got four responses in 15 minutes. I underestimated the power of Craigslist.
February 3rd, 2012 at 9:04 PM ^
Be careful with the black light.
February 3rd, 2012 at 9:14 PM ^
... or you underestimated the value of your mattress and boxspring.
February 3rd, 2012 at 9:25 PM ^
Troof. I bought them to furnish my college room at the Salvation Army almost 10 years ago. $20 apiece. We're not exactly talking fancy and we're definitely not talking brand new. Guess I should've known they'd command a price since you can't get mattresses at thrift stores around here - they won't take donated ones, bedbug laws.
That's OK, just getting rid of them means more to me than the money I'd get for them. They're just clutter now.

anyone else excited for Jack White's solo debut?
... out of Riverwest Steinbeer, onto Bell's Amber. not quite as good but it will do.
February 3rd, 2012 at 9:17 PM ^
Solo debut? When does that come out?
February 3rd, 2012 at 9:20 PM ^
late April. He's putting out a 7" vinyl single in a few days.
you can hear the electronic version here: http://thirdmanrecords.com/
But this will be one that will definately by entering my vinyl collection.

I want to know who is a better guitarist in the last 15 years than Jack White. And I want their music to rock, so don't say John Mayer.
February 3rd, 2012 at 9:21 PM ^
John Mayer.

What's the difference between flamebait and trolling again?
February 3rd, 2012 at 9:39 PM ^
Trolling means MSU/Ohio/ND fan.
Flamebaid means dumbass M fan.
Funny post is justingoblue.

Delivered.
February 3rd, 2012 at 9:30 PM ^
He was one of the first people in the early 2000's to stand up and say "since when is Nickelback an acceptable replacement to rock?"
Jack White is the shit.

I like your posts, yet
I do not want the swan flu.
How shall I mod'rate?
February 3rd, 2012 at 10:20 PM ^
Well, if you're looking for the very best, and you want your music to rock, check out Alexi Laiho from the band Children of Bodom. He's a freaking wizard. CoB was touring in GR and Detroit this past week, and he's just incredible to see live.
It's metal though, just warning you...
February 3rd, 2012 at 11:33 PM ^
I had never heard of these guys so I watched a couple videos of theirs on YouTube. And you're right, the lead guitarist dude does shred. The thing with metal, though, is that the music is just as much about the drums as it is about the lead guitar. It's sort of an identity - double bass pedals = metal band, right? I guess it's hard for me to say that a guy like Laiho is or isn't the best, because the technical aspects are totally different. With Jack White, most people will hear every note and be able to say he knows what he's doing; with Alexi Laiho, they might just hear noise and dismiss it. It's tempo and style and genre and personal taste.
February 4th, 2012 at 12:08 AM ^
I respect that entirely. I would say that, to the discerning ear, Alexi Laiho is one of the best, if not the best, shredders on the planet. The technical skill he has is simply unbelievable. His fingers were quite literally a blur. But there's many ways to be the "best" at guitar, as you pointed out.

Everybody not watching the Pistons game just missed the highlights from the Vanilla Ice halftime show. Vanilla Ice, people. Your loss.
February 3rd, 2012 at 9:22 PM ^
Denard at Yost dude.
February 3rd, 2012 at 9:27 PM ^
February 3rd, 2012 at 9:38 PM ^
Yes, it would. Strangely enough, the reason I've had such a surge of renewal of interest in the Pistons this year is because of how bad they are. I guess now that the Lions are good, the Pistons are filling the void of "team I like watching because there's absolutely no expectation." Plus Greg Monroe is actually pretty amazing.
February 3rd, 2012 at 11:05 PM ^
I guess I understand, it's like watching a train wreck, what you're seeing is bad but you can't look away.
And I've actually thought about hitting up some games, with tickets basically being given away it's a good excuse to just skip out on responsibility to watch some sports
February 3rd, 2012 at 11:48 PM ^
It's not really a train wreck thing. I don't know how to explain it. I just feel like there's a lot of catharsis in rooting for a really lousy team. I don't actively want any of my teams to be horrible, but when they get that way, it's like all pressure is off and I can just enjoy the game for the game's sake instead of worrying about what happens if they lose. If they win, great. If they lose, it's not like anything changed.
I could never get that way about college football, and I'd be awfully miserable if all my teams sucked, but still.
February 3rd, 2012 at 9:14 PM ^
There is a reason Sergott is the worst fucking ref in the ccha. His job before tr ccha was reffing mite hockey.

Denard is at Yost.

I love West Michigan.
February 3rd, 2012 at 9:25 PM ^
I'm in northern Virginia with shitty cable so the only moving pictures I can have on is Knicks/Celtics while I listen to the hockey game online. Are the Knicks a good point guard and a good coach away from being great, or are the Celtics ~18 months away from being too old to play but somehow squeeze out their last bits of talent every night? or both? or neither?
February 3rd, 2012 at 9:31 PM ^
The Knicks are in the finishing stages of digging out from the Isiah Thomas era. Can you imagine how bad they'd've been if they weren't the New York Knicks and Isiah was instead in charge of a small-market team in a town with no appeal to NBAers?
February 3rd, 2012 at 10:10 PM ^
Former NBA star... small market team... no fan base... hey, you really want me to say "Charlotte Bobcats," don't you?
February 3rd, 2012 at 10:22 PM ^
You forgot "former NBA star.....who thinks that because he was a really good ballplayer he knows everything there is to know about management and people are stupid enough to believe him." But at least Michael Jordan didn't burn down an entire league.

I wonder how many times NTM is gonna run Hunwick this period? Too bad fighting doesn't exist in college hockey.
February 3rd, 2012 at 9:28 PM ^
Sergott was the same POS ref in the ND series where ND thugged up hunwick. He is worthless.

score of hockey game please?
And Dogfish 90 here. Best IPA period.

00:03.3 left.
February 3rd, 2012 at 10:27 PM ^
Russian River released the 2012 vintage earlier this week, amid considerable crowds. Kegs only, so you may have to roadtrip it.
Pliny lacks the New Yorker imprimatur that Dogfish got a few years ago, but it has inspired many a local, Sonoma vintner. Good wine, they say, is made with lots of beer.
February 3rd, 2012 at 10:37 PM ^
But was able to pick up a few Elder bottles on the Michigan black market last summer. Hands down the best balanced IPA made, and I've had all the best, save for the Younger. 90 is very good, so is 120 and the no longer made Squall (bottle aged 90 min), but Elder is just tremendous.
As for me tonight, a few glasses of Bulleit Rye
February 3rd, 2012 at 11:25 PM ^
My wife, God bless her, found a bottle of Pliny the Elder which I received in this year's Christmas stocking. Still saving it. Here in DC area, Pliny is impossible to find. Only distributor on the entire East coast is in Philly.

Was lucky to acquire a case of Hopslam in past two weeks. Also had some on tap at a couple of DC bars.

Dogfish brew is generally plentiful down here and I love all the IPAs: 60, 75, 90, and the fairly rare 120 mins variety.

Agree with MGrowOld that the DFH 90 is fantastic, but I'd have to give the edge to Hopslam. if Pliny the Elder is indeed better, I can't wait to try. Guessing the odds of ever seeing the Younger out East are very, very long.
February 4th, 2012 at 12:03 AM ^
Pliny the Elder on tap is amazing, but the one I had in a bottle wasn't especially great.
