Ferentz the Gambler, or How Brian Cost Us the Iowa Game
Nice job Brian, with all your smart ass remarks and statistical analysis. Who else was raging at the TV set when Ferentz started going all Romer on us and going for every 4th down? I guess it's the price of being Michigan that everyone despite our struggles gets up for us with extra game planning and intensity.
All year we've heard about the "puntosaur", but when Mich comes to town they throw caution to the wind.

Ferentz listens to Brian?
November 7th, 2011 at 9:25 AM ^
The really question is who does not listen to Brian?
November 7th, 2011 at 1:23 PM ^
Ferentz doesn't.

Finally!!! A realistic response to why this saturday happened the way it did.
November 7th, 2011 at 10:33 AM ^
I just figured it was because Hoke forgot to drink his morning coffee, which led to him not having his daily magic movement.
November 7th, 2011 at 9:06 AM ^
your theory is if Brian actually starts providing false analysis for the next 3 weeks in order jack up the opposing teams game plan.

Technically you should be blaming the The Mathlete.
November 7th, 2011 at 10:40 AM ^
I've never trusted math or science and I never will
/skeptical eyes darting back and forth
November 7th, 2011 at 11:10 AM ^
And that there would be no math requirement...

Only scientists can check each other's work, so its all a big consipracy. They are scamming everyone.

Will you ever be able to change your avatar or signature?
November 7th, 2011 at 4:56 PM ^
Yes. By 2014 I expect to be a shotgun gif of pump-fire-reload.
Signature will be "In offseasons I point offscreen and pull the trigger"
November 7th, 2011 at 5:41 PM ^
No, we should be blaming math.
November 7th, 2011 at 9:15 AM ^
Going Romer is apparently the economic equivalent of going HAM. CHOICE.
November 7th, 2011 at 9:35 AM ^
i think the reason we lost is they scored more points. statistikly speaking this happens in %98 of games.
November 7th, 2011 at 10:25 AM ^
Due to end-of-game officiating, I'd argue this game was one of the 2% where the team that scores more didn't win. /s (sorta)

A perfect example of why football isn't about probablities and numbers as much as people think. Baseball is, football isn't.
November 7th, 2011 at 10:46 AM ^
Not so much with your hypothesis, that football isn't about probabilities, only with your evidence. Drawing a conclusion about probabilities from a single observation is, save for outcomes with very low probability, not very sound.
November 7th, 2011 at 11:34 AM ^
But seriously, there are millions of instances to support my opinion. I'm just pointing to the OP's half-joking frustration. There are a lot of people who look at these numbers as a black and white decision. But the emotions of football make most of these numbers obsolete, or at the very least, barely relevant.

You mean like the time Iowa went for it on fourth-and-one, failed the quick snap dive, and gave Michigan a short field, from which they scored their TD?
Or maybe you were referring to the 4th-and-1 in the 4th that turned into a 4th-and-6 thanks to a twitchy center -- at which point Ferentz shut off his inner Brian/Mathlete and punted -- pinning M back on their own 4 late in the game (and M would end up giving it back to Iowa at the 36 with 4 minutes left)?
I'm guessing Ferentz learned the following lesson: go for it = bad; punt = good.
November 7th, 2011 at 11:06 AM ^
The 4th and 7 they converted that lead to a score. He punts in that situation 98.2% of the time I have it documented. So for him to go against his Puntosaur instincts was quite remarkable.

When I saw the title, I wondered if this was going to be a disaster or something entertaining. I'll vote for "entertaining."
November 7th, 2011 at 11:00 AM ^
I commented to my GF during the game that "this is unbelievable, Ferentz never goes for it...this is a guy who's punted from the opponents 31..why is he doing this?"
argh.

I thought you were going to blame TWIS, because karnma is a bitch.
November 7th, 2011 at 11:51 AM ^
no no its my fault. for the purdue game i posted it would a low scoring defensive struggle where they match us. not so much. then for iowa i posted it would be a blue blowout. also less not so much.

so i am officially now predicting um gets blown out in all 3 remaining games. it gets so bad they start bellamy, throw 99% of the time, play campbell and brink every play over the woefully ineffective mm and rvb. we go 0-3 and lose by a combined 90 points.

you guys can thank me in 3 weeks....

i'll take the blame for this one too, i gave up the traditional #1 jersey for a new M hoodie. it was so soft and comforting i couldn't not wear it. the question i have about that is should i have washed it first before wearing the first time, could that have made the difference. it will definately be washed before next saturday and IF i choose to wear it again an M loses, then anyone want a free hoodie?
November 7th, 2011 at 1:24 PM ^
make sure you wash it WITH the #1 jersey so the magic will be shared.
