How likely is Dantonio to OSU now?
Obviously Luke Fickell is the coach of the Ohio Buckeyes, and Ohio is very close lipped about where they are going to go after this season regarding their head coaching position. I have to think that the result of The Game will determine Fickell's future. This is merely speculation, but after the events of the past four weeks, the Buckeye eyes have to be keeping a close look on Lansing. The quesiton is, how high has Dantonio moved up on their wish list if they miss on higher profle guys like Urban? A union of Dantonio and Ohio would ensure the resurection of an evil empire in C-Bus. I want to gage how likely the board thinks it is of Dantonio ending up as HC for the Buckeyes?

Brady Hoke is a 52 yr old coach without a big name and Michigan hired him. Compare Dantonio's record at MSU and UC against Hoke's at Ball State and SDSU and who would you choose?

JT wasn't fired, If that’s getting fired I'm going to work for Ohio when I get out of the service, FULL retirement benefits my friend and Ohio waived his fine.
As far as MD to OSU, he'll get a long term deal to rebuild if Ohio get a NCAA hit and Narduzzi or Tredwell will get the MSU job.
October 23rd, 2011 at 1:43 PM ^
Dantonio is the fall back. If all the big names say no, who will be left? You think they would pick a second rate outsider? Or a relatively successful Big 10 coach with OSU links?
I think the chance that Dantonio is the next coach is, say, about the same as the chance two years ago Hoke would become our coach. You never know how these things work out.
October 23rd, 2011 at 1:49 PM ^
I would be wary of saying second rate. I dislike the guy but after this season he will have a pretty strong resume. When Saban was pulling seasons like this with Sparty he was considered a marquee coach
October 23rd, 2011 at 5:36 PM ^
He's not calling him second rate. Read it again.
October 23rd, 2011 at 1:53 PM ^
not remotely likely. And can we stop with the "Ohio Buckeyes" nonsense? it makes us look petty. It's the ONE thing Hoke does that bugs me. He's a great coach, and such pettiness is silly. Mimicking him here when not one person has ever used the term is even dumber.
That said, they are delusional if they think they are getting Dantonio or Meyer...i'm guessing they will end up with someone far down the list. Times are changing.
October 23rd, 2011 at 2:03 PM ^
Mimicking him here when not one person has ever used the term is even dumber.
I know a few people, all middle-aged or older, who have always (going back to the Carr years) referred to them as "Ohio." It seems common among that age group for whatever reason. If it does cause offense to OSU fans, that seems a little strange given all their "OH-IO" cheers and such.
October 23rd, 2011 at 3:10 PM ^
Saying Ohio is not petty.
October 23rd, 2011 at 2:05 PM ^
Dantonio will never be the HC at OSU, but not because he doesn't want the job. He would blow Gene Smith and Gordon Gee at the same time if that's what it took.
He will never be offered the job because of the bad decisions he's made at MSU...playing felons, teaching thuggery, talking smack about college kids and just being a douche. The bad ticker doesn't help but isn't the main reason.
OSU needs someone to come in and clean up it's image. Mark Dantonio is a Jim Tressel clone without the personalty.
October 23rd, 2011 at 2:29 PM ^
I would imagine that there is a chance that they would see Dantonio as "more of the same", when in face they want, "more of the same, but with straighter teeth and a disarming smile"

they need to be sacrificed for having no morals whatsoever and having saint tressel lead the way through lies and deceit all in the name of winning football games. tsio's standing may return abut not until after they pay the price for making a deal with "Satan" himself.

When he signed his extension not too long ago wasn't everyone saying it's going to make Dantonio a Spartan for life?
October 23rd, 2011 at 2:36 PM ^
I don't understand why OSU would be turned off by Dantonio's health issues, but still have Meyer high up on their list. Meyer almost retired after the 2009 season and then actually retired after the 2010 season because of his health. I really don't think OSU is as interested in Urban Meyer as their fans or the media want them to be. My personal opinion is that they wil do their due dilligence on Meyer and Dantonio, but ultimately hire a guy like Tim Beckman.
October 23rd, 2011 at 2:37 PM ^
On the "Boarding House" feature on Bucknuts on either Thursday or Friday it was said that a "well-informed" former player has said the decision has already been made that it's going to be Urban Meyer.
Now whether the decision has been made to go after him first or both sides have arleady been talking...well that wasn't mentioned. There's also this. Herbstreit, about a week was on the radio and stated that if the job is offered to Meyer he will take it....but I (and I'm sure all of you) have a pretty good recollection of Les Miles to Michigan being a done deal.
It's been stated a couple times before and I agree with it, OSU really needs to get away from anyone connected with Tressel. I really think the OSU admin has to cleanse themselves of anything to do with Tressel just for the sake of showing the NCAA what has been done. Here's where you can make jokes and jokes and jokes about how well OSU has handled everything. Dantonio would in more ways than one be a step back for the program as a new head coach. Right now, it's Meyer or bust for most of the OSU fanbase.
I really think it's going to come down to how severe the sanctions happen to be if Meyer comes or not. If they're fairly light, everything I've seen shows me Meyer to OSU being a very high likelihood of happening. This is my opinion, I don't claim to be any sort of an insider whatsoever. From the info I've read that comes from known insiders on Bucknuts and other places, it's a very good chance of Meyer to OSU.
I don't know whether I really want Meyer as a head coach. Obviously the recruiting and his ability to win wherever he has been is an enormous plus but are we going to be needing to do a coaching search around 2016 or so? Of course if he can throw in a couple of national titles in that time frame and then retire again...well I would be ok with that.
October 23rd, 2011 at 2:43 PM ^
OSU insiders also pay players so I wouldn't hold too much stock in what they "know".
October 23rd, 2011 at 4:10 PM ^
Not that what you are saying was posted is not true, but It does remind me of when Rich Rod was fired. Everyone said that JimHarbaugh was a shoe in, and that it was already a done deal. Hindsight that could not have been further from the truth. I’m just saying that rumor was started because Harbaugh was the guy most fans wanted. A lot like Meyer and OSU.

Dantonio has cemented a place for himself in the pantheon of MSU coaches, and he'll retire a hero if he stays in EL. If he goes to Columbus, he'll be relentlessly compared to Tressel—whose record aside from the championship games is really top-notch—and at the first instance of any failure the sociopathic Buckeye fans will descend on him like a pack of jackals on an injured baby lamb. Not to mention that intra-conference moves by coaches is very very rare, especially in the Big Ten.
October 23rd, 2011 at 4:17 PM ^
Remind me of how those classy & rational Michigan fans treated RR?

RR's treatment, before he even coached a game, was worse than any OSU coach has ever received. Hell, Cooper & Bruce still live in C-Bus. Do you think Rich Rod would be allowed anywhere near AA?

October 23rd, 2011 at 3:08 PM ^
Something I've been thinking about. Disclaimer: in no way do I think it's likely, but could it happen?
Scenario: NCAA Concludes OSU investigation, Tressel is not given a "show-cause" penalty. OSU got over the hump by cutting ties with Tressel. But now, months later, the program is in disarray after losing to Michigan at the Big House. Fickell is fired.
It's December of 2011. Could they potentially hire Tressel back?
October 23rd, 2011 at 3:12 PM ^
no way in hell that happens.
October 23rd, 2011 at 3:14 PM ^
He's probably too old, and he has some health issues to worry about. I'm sure he would accept the job in a New York minute, but I doubt they offer him.
October 23rd, 2011 at 5:47 PM ^
He's not much older than Hoke and your picture in your signature is too large.
October 23rd, 2011 at 3:27 PM ^
of the relevant info to answer the question. I'm sure OSU would give him a serious look if the job were to come open and whether he's truly interested or not, he would make respectful gestures back. Personally, I would be happier with him taking OSU through a new transition and MSU transitioning once more than to have--say--Urban Meyer there. But mostly Michigan has to continue with the task of getting its own house in order, undeniably a harder one in a bigger B1G where MSU and Wisconsin have both become undeniably more powerful and Nebraska is going to be a perennial contender.

As in, "Dantonio would take the Ohio job in a heartbeat."
Really, Sparty is in a no-win situation this season. If they suck, they are "Same Old Sparty." If they are good, they will probably lose their coach. I would rather see him go to Ohio, because you know Ohio is going to be good for whoever they get. I would rather see Ohio be good and Sparty suck than see both teams be good.
The entire MSU program is unbearable when they are even remotely good. I would rather not take their shit anymore.
October 23rd, 2011 at 5:36 PM ^
so I can't bring myself to repeat it. But, for how I feel, you nailed it. Strong work.
October 23rd, 2011 at 5:43 PM ^
Whole bunch of misperceptions here.
1) Doubtful OSU pursues Dantonio. He has ties to Tressel, recent health issues, and likely isn't ready for THAT big of a stage yet.
2) Doubtful Dantonio seriously considers them (with looming violations and the stress of the job. Money alone likely doesn't sway him. He has already built a winning program in EL, so why would he start all over at OSU? He has publicly said, on more than one occasion, that he has settled down in EL with his family and doesn't want to move anywhere else. He is happy, comfortable, and doesn't gain much more going to a more competitive place. Privately, he has promised recruits in this upcoming year's (2012) class that he will be there "for their entire college careers", which is AT LEAST the next five years from now).
October 23rd, 2011 at 8:51 PM ^
I guess Hoke was ready for THIS stage but Dantonio not ready for OSU stage even though Dantonio has proven himself more as a B1G coach than Hoke? Come on now..
October 23rd, 2011 at 10:08 PM ^
Privately, he has promised recruits in this upcoming year's (2012) class that he will be there "for their entire college careers", which is AT LEAST the next five years from now).
And no coach has ever gone back on such a promise?

of physicians (or "Tumor Board" if you will). But if any of you think for a second that MD won't bolt for Ohio if offered the job, you have lost your marbles.
I'm not saying it's the right thing to do, so to speak. I also agree with the majority of points made that equate to "he'll never pay for a beer again in the EL area" if he continues to have any degree of success in the Big Ten or vs. Michigan.
But Ohio State vs. Sparty On for a guy who got his call from being an OSU DC is a no brainer. He's got a great gig in EL. No doubt. But as it was put when RR came here, if you are successful here, you walk on water. That's OSU. If you win there, you are a permanent fixture to the history of this game. You don't get that at MSU. At least not now. Maybe MD wants to change that. If so, good luck. But when mama calls, you listen . . .
This really isn't meant as disrespect to Sparty. I would cringe and probably say the same thing about our basketball program if Coach B had ties to Kentucky, UNC, Duke, UCLA, whatever.
October 23rd, 2011 at 7:22 PM ^
Mark Dantonio has history at MSU. He has arguably just as much of a connection there (time under Saban) as he does with OSU. He has also made it very public that he wants to stay there. There are A LOT of quotes and times that he has gone out of his way to say he's happy that would bite him should he leave. You don't hear that stuff from people like Brian Kelly, Lane Kiffin, etc.. that are always on the move.
October 23rd, 2011 at 8:50 PM ^
Beilein doesn't have a history with UM like Dantonio has with MSU. And none of those basketball schools are staring at major violations charges right now.
October 23rd, 2011 at 7:17 PM ^
At this point, it would really be the best for UM if Dantonio became Ohio's coach. He has proven himself a very good coach. THere is no question Ohio will end up with a good coach regardless if it is Dantonio or not. Our best bet is that Ohio's good coach be Dantonio, and then hopefully MSU's new headcoach is a Fickel type clown, so we can get back to in-state domination and have just one main BiG rival to worry about.
October 23rd, 2011 at 7:24 PM ^
There is a lot of things, some good and some bad, being drummed up in this thread to make some kind of connection to Dantonio and OSU but it's just not going to happen.
October 24th, 2011 at 10:21 AM ^
I agree. Izzo didn't just donate a million dollars to MSU football out of pure kindness. There is a base now to what was once delusion in east lansing. They believe they have an elite status in football now, to match basketball. Most realistic people know it takes more than sharing a big ten title three ways and losing four straight bowl games to really achieve this standard but msu is far from realistic. I don't think Dantonio is going anywhere. Izzo dug his grave after the Cavs fiasco , he wants Dantonio to have a tombstone next to his.
October 23rd, 2011 at 9:37 PM ^
You've got to think the OBC isn't going to stay around forever, he' 66.
October 23rd, 2011 at 9:52 PM ^
If he wants to win a NC then I would think he would take a look at ohio. He's built MSU up but so did Saban and he bolted after building sparty to a respectable level. He'll make more money, depending on what kind of sanctions ohio receives, will have a better opportunity to win a ring(s) at ohio.
October 23rd, 2011 at 10:05 PM ^
Switching from one conference team to another doesn't happen very often (Houston Nutt being a counter-example), and I have to assume that one obvious reason is that you'll play against guys you recruited for the next 3-4 years, which has to be hard.
To me, the question is how tied is Dantonio to his Buckeye background. If that's his dream job, then yes he might take it. If not, he'd be crazy to.
October 24th, 2011 at 12:17 AM ^
Both ended the coaching careers in Shame!!! Let MD be the third!
October 24th, 2011 at 12:24 AM ^
Dantonio would take the Ohio job in a heartbeat, the question is, would Ohio want him?
Keep in mind, he was on Tressel's staff going back to Jim's Youngstown days. In terms of program continuity, thats probably a good thing for Ohio. In terms of him knowing something about the Cash for Tats scandal, it probably doesn't look good. Ohio might be perceived as hiring on the basis of beating Michigan; remember what happened the last time Ohio did that? If you don't, see "Cooper, John".
Another guy who will LIKELY get mentioned is Bo Pelini. Why? Pelini is a Ohio alum, having played under Earle Bruce and John Cooper. Pelini has been known to be displeased with the Nebraska administration, who he feels, do not adequately back him.
