What a great start for Delmon, this is feeling like a really solid pick up.
August 15th, 2011 at 8:37 PM ^
Wow.....didn't know he was within earshot of the 600 plateau

The difference in coverage between Jeter's pursuit of 3,000 hits and Thome's pursuit of 600 homers is unfortunate. 600 homers seems like a more prestigious record, but Jeter must more well known.
August 15th, 2011 at 9:07 PM ^
I would disagree. For me, 3000 hits is a more prestigious accomplishment. I believe the subsantial coverage is definitely warranted.
August 15th, 2011 at 9:12 PM ^
28 players have 3,000 hits while only 7 players (including Thome) have 600 homers, but I could see the former milestone being more highly regarded by the media and baseball fans (3,000 hits and 500 homers are synonymous with famed hitting careers, while 600 homers doesn't really get the same attention).
August 15th, 2011 at 9:19 PM ^
I suppose I just believe 3000 hits to be more indicative of a great hitting career than 600 homeruns. They're both damn good though.
August 15th, 2011 at 9:25 PM ^
Agreed.
August 15th, 2011 at 9:50 PM ^
They are both impressive. However, 3,000 hits shows that you have been a consistent threat at the plate, whereas some of the more prolific power hitters, especially in the modern game (yes, you, Reggie) have struck out at a prolific pace too.
August 15th, 2011 at 10:09 PM ^
I agree, but to play devil's advocate, one of the guys on baseball tonight said that homers were more impressive because (and I'm paraphrasing) batters can get lucky hits (bloops into shallow outfiled, for example) while "you can't get a lucky homerun."
Just another perspective to consider.
August 15th, 2011 at 8:39 PM ^
I won a $20 bet that Thome would hit #600 tonight.
August 15th, 2011 at 8:41 PM ^
But that was #599
August 15th, 2011 at 8:44 PM ^
It was an open ended $20 bet. If he hit two homers tonight, I get $20. Lol I'm not a total moran.
August 15th, 2011 at 8:46 PM ^
That would make more sense. And I never accused you of being an idiot. Just thought you may have misheard that he was at 599, or something like that.
August 15th, 2011 at 8:44 PM ^
You happen to be THE_KNOWLEDGE.
August 15th, 2011 at 9:08 PM ^
HE IS THE_KNOWLEDGE
nonetheless, congrats, enjoy the 20 bucks.

THIS MAN SEES THE FUTURE.
August 15th, 2011 at 9:08 PM ^
Aquaman2342 is the REAL THE_KNOWLEDGE.... Even though I hate that you just won that bet.
August 15th, 2011 at 9:16 PM ^
You, sir, are some kind of Wizard!
August 15th, 2011 at 8:43 PM ^
Awesome throw by Jackson and extremely great play by Avila to hold on.
August 15th, 2011 at 8:50 PM ^
Was some MANBALL!
August 15th, 2011 at 9:04 PM ^
seem to chase their tails alot.
Bring in a new pitcher and he walks a couple right after we crawl back into it.
Leadoff walks are killer.
Add to that the very poor defense we play every night and its a true wonder we are in 1st place.
August 15th, 2011 at 9:08 PM ^
Congrats Jim Thome and congrat aquaman2342 on winning your bet.

Aquaman, it's time to bet that the Tigers win 10-9.
August 15th, 2011 at 9:18 PM ^
I bet you one Internet Fistbump that the Tigers lose. If they win, you get a fistbump.
August 15th, 2011 at 9:37 PM ^
You know, I never noticed this brfore but I have had poops that look eerily similar to the contents of that foam box. I should probably eat more protein... or less protein.
August 15th, 2011 at 9:30 PM ^
Raburn at 7, get what you can from the 8, 9 slots. Whyyyyyy is Leyland Blind?
August 15th, 2011 at 9:35 PM ^
According to ESPN Gamecast, Rian Rayburned just went yard. And as he rounded 3rd base, Gamecast reported that he screamed "Haters gonna hate" to Gene LaMont.

HOW YA LIKE ME NOW
August 15th, 2011 at 10:04 PM ^
YOU ARE HISTORY'S GREATEST MONSTER
August 15th, 2011 at 9:45 PM ^
Phil Coke is Joe Dirt only fatter and slightly more pathetic. He did have a decent start agianst Boston albeit in a fog that could shut down the port.
August 15th, 2011 at 9:46 PM ^
I really think Austin Jackson needs to go play winter ball after this season... He has to learn that striking out 30% of his at bats, and hitting .250 is not lead off hitter numbers (Even in Leyland's lineups).
I really like what he brings to the defense but much like Granderson early in his career, has to make some changes at the plate.
August 15th, 2011 at 9:50 PM ^
I really believe Raburn is on mgoblog, modding all of the anti-Raburn posts trolling...
August 15th, 2011 at 9:53 PM ^
They said 65 of Thomes 600 home runs came against the Tigers. I must have seen everyone because it seems like he hit 500 against us.
August 15th, 2011 at 10:22 PM ^
the normal august / september let down is in fulll swing now
Porcello and penny just bad lately
looks like seattle took us yet again in another trade
should of never gave leyland that extension
August 15th, 2011 at 11:41 PM ^
Congrats, Thome.
August 16th, 2011 at 1:18 AM ^
for a consistent lineup!
August 16th, 2011 at 10:07 AM ^
Why can't he go away? And why can't Leyland go with him? All jokes aside,if the tigers don't win the division Jimmy Smokes will be gone...His replacement .......A guy "with two bad knees"...war gibson coming back to Motown ...
