OT: Butch Davis Out at UNC?

Submitted by icefins26 on

Tons of chatter stating that Butch Davis is out at UNC.  Not good -- some are jumping to conclusions that the NCAA might be dropping the hammer.  Well, Greg Garmon might have one less school to consider (although he has dropped us, apparently).

9 days before fall practice? Maybe Baddour saw him in the hallway this morning and remembered that he never actually got around to firing him like he should have done SEVEN MONTHS AGO.

Look at all these top defensive players he churns out at UNC and Miami that were not blue chippers in high school. It's unfortunate that he hired John Blake.

It's not like the situation at UNC just developed over the past week or two.

Butch hires John Blake, and RR hires Greg Robinson. Vastly different situations of course, but the lesson is the same: a head coach's success or failure is largely determined by the assistants he hires. The extensive coaching trees established by the very best coaches is a testament to that. Bo was a great coach on his own, but he hired highly capable assistants throughout his career.

This was a power struggle between the board of trustees and the AD and UNC president. The trustees wanted him gone long ago. The president and AD (and a couple of generous boosters) were in Davis' corner and wanted to ride it out.

Ultimately, the trustees exercised the authority they had and gave him the boot. It's something that should've been done months ago. Davis is a dirtbag. He hired a coach that was acting as a runner for an agent. They were paying players. There was rampant academic fraud. They were totally unrepentant about it all and completely uncooperative.

Of course he should've been fired.

Just announced.   He's retiring (was retiring anyway) but now will speed it up.

Baddour: "I have asked Holden Thorp to begin the search for a new Athletics Director." Baddour falling on the sword.
