WSJ article about Santa Ono and Michigan

Let's give Ono an extension along with Harbaugh.

It's what's holding up Jim's contract. The Santa clause.

Were your eyes open when you clicked on which thread to post? You might have been off by one.
(This doesn't sound as amusing now that you edited your comment. Oh well - it's almost time for pregame activities.)

Any chance of a brief summation of what it says for those not inclined to read the article unless it contains something new or interesting?
I’ll hang up and listen. About to head to Rice Village for pre-gaming. 😉

Bit of a fluff article to be sure, but basically rehashes some of how Santa has approached the football team hype, how he supports Harbaugh, the nature of challenges & expectations for college presidents today, and a little of his background.
Short article.

Ono considers Harbaugh a friend, and he's doing everything he can to keep him at Michigan.
Also we're cheaters.
That's about it.

It's written by an alum and certainly falls as a bit of a puff-piece for her / our university and president, directed moreso at the WSJ-reading types than the sports crowd. I think the most noteworthy comment for the board comes at the end regarding his & Harbaugh's relationship:
“I consider him a friend, which is kind of unusual,” Ono said. “I mean, obviously there’s a business aspect of being involved in the negotiation. But you know in life, jobs and employment and all those sorts of things are certainly important. But for him and for me, I think our friendship matters. It transcends how long he or I will be at the University of Michigan.”

Boy you could say that 3x

Here is my very brief summation:
Ono embraces college football culture and value it brings to the University. His short tenure has produced successful fundraising for the university. Ono considers Harbaugh a friend, which impacts both of their tenure at Michigan.
ono values Harbaugh, our president is pro football and Harbaugh

our president is pro football
Wait a minute, now our president is going to the NFL?!?
I kid.

The main point, I think, is that he sees big-time college sports not as a distraction but as one of the few things that does such a good job uniting different parts of fan bases and different parts of the university.

WSJ pumping out the Michigan content lately...

Great article. Reading the embedded link about the all-UM Apollo mission, I came to learn that was the SECOND all-UM space mission crew.

after an early snarky article about sign gate, the WSJ has had a series of even handed and even complimentary articles about M football, Harbaugh, and now Ono. nice to see that in the national press. I especially like the articles from Jason Gay who writes tongue I cheek stuff and is a Wisconsin guy.
I think Ono was such a great hire and so far so good
January 8th, 2024 at 2:22 PM ^
If Harbaugh goes so does Warde. Ono absolutely cannot let him hire the next football coach.

Great fluff piece. I'm glad Ono supports athletics. Right or wrong, people are more willing to donate to the school and the athletic program when the football team is winning. The article mentions that sports are one of the few things that bind us in our politically devisive world. WSJ comments are interesting. Michigan is either a bunch of cheaters or too woke. I would have thought that WSJ readers would have a bit more nuanced.

Never read comments (except on Mgoblog).

How do you juxtapose Santa Ono's reverence for Jim with the unwavering targeting of Jim and by extension the Team and University?
Why would a former booster and current minority NFL Team owner and alumnus put some petty issue between two grown men and thereby tarnish his supposed beloved Team and alma mater from a position of power that has indiscriminate authority and that can't be legally challenged (See Roger Goodell)?
Why is such disdain for this institution (that most of us value for its effort to do the right thing) so fashionable and by coaches/AD's either of schools who know they got legit beat or have wrecked Michigan regularly and know we couldn't have had a no working non-advantage crossing a rule not written?
Other than the revenue sharing angle I am perplexed by any other reason not rivalry related. Another opportunity to dispel the narrative awaits and the Boys are focused. LFG!
