This is good for the program long term.

Harbaugh can go recruit the next DC he wants and tell them he can help them get to the next level.

Not worried. In fact, wouldn't mind if we promoted from within

But leave now. Let him get a head start there and let us move on. Just promote Mattison to DC for the bowl game and we'll be fine. This certainly won't help our recruiting though. While we all knew DJ would probably be gone by next season, I don't know if the recruits thought the same way.

regardless of sports apparel money and perceived willingness to make massive improvments. It's a bb school and will be in the shadow of same for a number of years.

However, as much as I like him and believe he did a great job, this spot - DC - causes me just a minimum of concern. We already have a Super Bowl winning DC on staff that has learned wherever he has been and is regarded as one of the best in the business. Shafer, having already worked for Jim would be an obvious choice and he is damn good at his job when that job is DC, and not HC. Keeping Greg and bringing in a recognized quality person on that side of the ball will keep the recruiting momentum going, and Durkin built off of what was already a highly ranked defense under Greg so I think we'll be ok. I would not even mind if GM reacquired the title and bringing in a young, sharp mind to learn and grown under him, ideally one with a reputation for developing great lber play.

Here's the bottom line IMO.  Durkin is an excellent DC and a big loss, but I know Harbaugh will find a guy that is good.

This hurts us in 2 ways, potentially 3, it hurts continuity, we have a god thing we are building, to have a major change is not ideal at this juncture.  Recruiting, Durkin is flat out one of the top recruiters in the nation, that's one reason we were all so excited when he was hired, outside of the head coach he was the best recruiter we had.  The 3rd way is if he takes a coah or two with him, but IO think that isn't that likely.

Durkin was an absolute stud as a recruiter and this will cost us a few recruits.

This is what happens when I am in a meeting and then leave early to get some prescriptions at CVS - coordinators take other positions.

In all seriousness though, I would have thought he would give it at last another year, but then it also makes me wonder what was up with the brief flirtation of "Richt To Maryland" rumors the other day. All the same, hopefully it works out for him and I do wish him luck in this new endeavor.

Well deserved.  He's payed his dues and is a fiery and seemingly bright young coach.  Nice to see the Harbaugh coaching tree get its props.

We shit the bed against OSU and Indiana, but in all fairness, stopping up-tempo spread when you are down 3 starters on the D-line is no easy task.  The depth, or lack thereof, of our defensive line is what hurt us late in the year more than anything schematic.  And of course, our lack of playmaking linebackers who were exposed once they had to shed blocks and make plays in space because of not having a dominant D-line in front of them.

The 3-3-5 deployed against OSU was really a hail mary because we were so depleted along the D-line from injuries, not a defense they would have chosen if healthy.

Congrats and good luck.  Now go out and build a solid program that justifies you being the coach here at Michigan in 15 years when Harbaugh decides to become the Athletic Director.

to hell with him and nd (unless someone can prove to me he didn't interview the week during The Game).
