Sports Illustrated ranks John Beilein 9th best offensive coach in NCAA

Sports Illustrated has a story up at SI.com about NCAA coaches and which ones are best at building elite offenses. John Beilein is in 9th place overall and third in the Big 10 behind Matta and Crean. He didn't score well in recruiting instant impact players (no surprise) but he made up for that in player development.
SI’s study was limited to coaches who’ve spent at least the past four years in one of the nine biggest conferences (the ACC, American, Atlantic 10, Big East, Big Ten, Big 12, Mountain West, Pac-12 and SEC) or at one of the elite programs in the Missouri Valley or West Coast Conferences. It begins with data from 2006–07 and ends with the 2015–16 regular season, up until the beginning of conference tournaments. It focuses strictly on offense because it’s possible to analyze players on an individual level (not so with defense), and because great offense is critical in the NCAA tournament. Just one national champ in the past 10 years (UConn in 2014) has entered the dance ranked outside the top 20 in adjusted offensive efficiency.

I don't even want to see what his ranking on Defense is.
they claim they didn't rank defense because it's too hard to do without individual statistics, or something. I think the defense can be fixed with 2 simple adjustments. 1) hire an assistant coach with a track record/reputation for being a good defensive coach, and 2) do a better job motivating the players. Defense is very dependent on attitude. Anybody can move their feet and keep their hands up. Understanding good defensive position takes a couple practices. The rest is just "want to" and athletic ability. Dakich can "want to" play good defense, but he's limited by his size. Dawkins has athletic ability, but does he "want to" be a shutdown defender?
Is it his development? Or is it his lack of recruting or some bad luck (McGary, Benzing and Cronin?

I totally agree that a lot of defense and rebounding is "want to". Sure, scheme is important too, but determination is a huge factor in becoming a good defender and rebounder. Some guys are self-motivated, and some guys need a coach to light a fire under them...and some guys can't be bothered.
He should be higher than that.
He really should IMO. And i am no kool aid drinker.
What he does with what he has on offense is pretty damn special.
His weaknesses are defense and recruiting. But offensively, i could not place him outside the top 5.
Anyone who can put up offensive numbers like he does with Novak, GRIII and Irvin as power forwards is just short of Einstien offensive knowledge IMO.

Any list that has Matta ranked ahead of JB regarding offense is bunk. OSU's offenses are painful to watch every year. OSU wins by playing great defense and usually having more talent than the other team.
it's a ten year ranking, and he's had some pretty good offensive talent pass through his program over that time - Mike Conley, Evan Turner, Jared Sullinger, Deshaun Thomas, and D'Angelo Russell. (and yes, I intentionally left off one apple-cheeked young'un who was more noted for his defense than his shooting prowess.)
and Matta is ahead of JB cause Matta is a better recruiter. I'm not going to argue that.
They both represent their coaches well. Conversation over between Thad and Coach B.
Cumong, now. Beilein has been superb over the years getting the most out of his players with complementary schemes, and has been pretty adaptable over the years. It's somehow fashionable with some on this board to bash Beilein, but on the offensive side he is a great coach.

He's lower than others because the authors are counting recruiting and player retention among the factors they consider.
Or player detention in the case of MSU.

OK, now I can admit it. I only created this thread to prevent me from jinxing the MTSU upset over MSU.
I'm giddy for Giddy Potts. He's my second favorite Giddy/Geddy after Geddy Lee.
A top 10 offensive coach would have figured out a way to beat MTSU. So sad, too bad, Middle Michigan State University. See ya!
