S/O to Mott Children's Hospital

Submitted by Human Torpedo on

My newly born nephew from early December has been there twice in his early life. He had to go there first to have open heart surgery to repair the left side of his heart. He was discharged around New Year's. Then he had an chest infection just recently and had to be readmitted. Everything looks great as of now though and today he appears to be heading back home. By the way, my sister was an MSU alum but now wants to root for Michigan. Thank you so much for all your service, Mott!

It is a marvelous, modern age in which we live.  Not only do we possess the skill to repair a newborn baby's heart, but we can get a Spartan to flip her allegiance to Michigan.  Miracles abound!

Wonderful news about your nephew, though.  Wonderful.

Amen!  Yesterday was our family's first trip there, and they are so wonderful to all, especially the kids.

...does anyone else in Mott find themselves looking all over thinking they will see a Wolverine roaming the halls?  I kept thinking I would, and probably shouldn't have promised the children they would, but didn't.  (it was a lot like when i'd be walking around Manhattan expecting to happen across an episode of one of the Law n Orders being filmed.)

My nephew was on ECMO for 2 weeks at Mott after aspirating on his muconeum and then blowing out both lungs during birth. The machine oxygenated his blood while the lungs healed. That was almost six years ago now, and he is a genius kid living a healthy life.

Very grateful for Mott. No reports of Wolverine athletes during that time though :)

Awesome news. Having a baby girl myself, I can't image what it would be like to have to watch her struggle through life right now. Prayers to you, your child, and your family

Ive been going to mott's since I was 3 years old for a congenital heart defect. Ive been through 2 open heart surgeries and will turn 40 this year. Greatly appreciate all they do at the University of Michigan hospital. Even though my echocardioligist there is an OSU alum and fan lol

On the addition to your family and their upcoming discharge.  The peds cards team there is phenomenal, he was/is in very, very good hands there.  I don't know if Dr. Bove is still around, but he's one of the super small handful of people in the world who is said to be able to "walk on water" when it comes to repairing kids' hearts.

That's awesome, I've never met him in person, but have read about his work extensively (and as a side note, one of my good friends from residency probably helped take care of your son during his pediatric cards fellowship at Mott during that exact time). This is a bit of a tangent, but the training thing you reference is a fascinating ramimifcation of having a guy like Dr Bove around. Given that there are relatively few cases (in the grand scheme of things) people, rightfully so, will seek out the best surgeons. As a result, they get even better, somewhat at the expense of everyone else and their experience and so the cycle perpetuates itself. But when you have a giant in the field around like Dr Bove, thats pretty much the only way to get the experience to become the next giant.

I work at Arkansas Children’s Hospital in Little Rock. While I don’t have direct patient care as part of my job, I love it here. Makes me feel good when I lay my head down at night.

My wife and I had our twins at Mott last year.  The level of care at that facility simply blew me away.  We had our first child at Royal Oak Beaumont (no slouch, either) and there was really no comparison.

Here's to a long and healthy life for your little nephew!  Go Blue!

Mott is the greatest! My daughter was admitted the day after Christmas for her severe eczema. The doctors, nurses, child life specialists, custodians, security, well, everyone there were amazing. The Gameday Experience room was really cool, and after four days, she was able to go home with a huge improvement. I’m so thankful we left be near such a world-class facility.
