Attending U of M and then getting in trouble with the law does not make him a disgrace. He made mistakes, got caught, now he's paying for his crimes. Let him do his time and come out the other side a better man.

Agree.  The guy made a mistake.  He owned up to it, and he is trying to move on.  From what I have read about him, he is a single father, and a dedicated one at that, who has done a fair amount of good in his life with respect to medical charities and youth organizations.  His sole indiscretion - and I am certainly not downplaying it - was taking a $5,000 bribe.Should he lose his public office for this?  Yes.  Should he serve his time in jail and pay the appropriate consequences. Yes.

But, to call him  a disgrace goes too far.  I am about at much of a proponent of the "Michigan Man" theory of holding our alum to a higher standard, but people make mistakes.  Hopefully, those mistakes do not hurt others.  Hopefully, those who make the mistakes learn from them and live their lives as better people.

I feel sad every time I see a former Wolverine screw up their lives.  These kids come to this school with a huge step up (a free degree from one of the top universities in the world), and it is a shame when they squander it.

It never looks good to have fellow alumni getting into shit. We'd be yuk-yukin' it up if he went to State, like we do with Cheddar Plax and Winston. Whether you like it or not, you represent your parents, your hometown, your schools after you leave. It sucks for him and I wish him the best, but it also puts UM in a negative light. Just like people doing good things after they graduate puts UM in a positive light.

He's certainly fat, but I don't see his party affiliation in that story.

Anyway, the descriptive form you probably meant to use is "Democratic".  The use of "Democrat" as a descriptive term (rather than a noun) is a snipe, childish swipe usually meant to degrade the person's political position (i.e. "...the democrat party wants to send your granny to a death panel where illegal immigrants rub their sweaty Mexican balls on her chin").

I'd say that someone using O'Reilly-isms is a "disgrace" but who am I to judge.  Besides, I thought political baiting was off-limits here?

NO POLITICS!!!

I think that the OP was referring to his party affiliation (yes, Skrepenak is a member of the Dem party), and nothing more - I certainly did not read any political swipe at the Dem party in there.

He was a hell of a football player, he didn't get into any trouble while at school (i think), and is quite removed from Michigan by now.

Any organization of Michigan's size will have people who do immoral things.  To think otherwise is foolish.

HAAA! Skrepenak only hired his lawyer to look svelte in court.  The picture looks like someone decided to spend a lot of time creating lifelike 'Weeble's".

I think 4godkingandwolv has a good point.  Any institution the size of the University of Michigan will have a few people make poor decisions.  It appears that he dealt with it head on with an admission of guilt and an apology.

At least it did not happen while he was a student athlete.

Good luck to Greg in getting his life together.  That's really the only important issue here.

I grew up there and played football at EL Meyers( Rocket Ismail's high school) Skrep went to GAR our rival so I met him at some football events. My grandfather was a county Judge and Skrep heard my name called out during a football practice and walked up to me to say hello since his family knew my grandfather. Small city.

Skrep said to me I heard your a Michigan fan, I said yes sir Go Blue! He was in the NFL at this time and it was a pretty big deal for me to meet a former Michigan player and NFL player like that. Back to the story with Skrep  my grandfather and father are PSU fans (my dad went there)

He asked me if I was trying to go to Michigan and  I told him yes and he said good, how are your grades? I said pretty good. He said I know you have a few years before you have to go to college but you better hit the books hard and be part of this community because that what a true Michigan man would do.

The ending to this story is I was about to graduate from High School and I got into UM and my grandparents had me over before I left and my POP had a letter for me. It was from Skrep and it said Go Blue on it . Inside he said welcome to the family and he gave me a phone number of person inside the football program and he said call them when you get there I have a treat for you.....

I ended up meeting BO and Carr for only a few minutes and that was awesome for a kid from North Eastern, PA. So maybe the guy has some issues with the law but he really cares about Michigan and that is how I see him.

Went to GAR, then to Coughlin.

Like many small isolated towns, Wilkes-Barre politics are very corrupt and also very corrupting.  For example, back in my day, if you wanted to be a school teacher, the going rate was a $2000 "contribution".

Mother Theresa would have come out of there corrupt, much less Skrepenak.  He'll bounce back.

I met Skrep on a flight once, he was cool to talk to.  Took up the whole damn row.

So is Skrep hanging out with Peter Moses in an effort to look thin?  It may actually be working.

Not as cool as Giff's story, but I did meet this guy when I was probably 12-13 and he was pretty cool to me.

He got caught with his hand in the cookie jar. I imagine the unprecedented and meteoric rise of Mr. Obama is accompanied by a few embarrassing and corrupt tidbits as well.

Mistake?  Yes.  Should he pay the price?  Yes.  Disgrace to UofM?  Not really.  Buddy of mine back in the day slept with Skrepenak's cheerleader girlfriend and caught him some crabs.  Funny?  Yes.

...he got caught? Sorry, I don't take corrupt public officials lightly nor give them a pass even if they did play for U of M. Bo would have kicked his ass if he was alive today.
