Report on McNair's death and Maryland culture will be out soon

Some players defend the Durkin regime and maybe certain narratives need additional context but there some events here that have crossed a line.  Throwing a player who vomited from a workout into a refigerator and then making him clean up the mess? I wonder if any of this would be coming to light if it weren't for the preventable death of a player.

It's been commonly written about that Bo made the players run laps and set out buckets for people to vomit into.  Yet, the overall culture has never alleged to have been abusive.  Where the culture of an institution intersected with tragedy is a player losing consciousness and showing heatstroke symptoms.  "Drag his ass across the field" is a response borne of an abusive culture that disregards the safety of its people.  Putting ice bags on Jordan until help arrived might have saved his life.

Even in the old days when men were men and blah blah blah, it was never OK for a player to die on the field.  Player death has always been beyond the pale.

It was during the Teddy Roosevelt administration that college football underwent major rule changes to make the game safer.

"During meal and in training rooms, players were shown videos featuring loud music, violent imagery, and animals killing each other."  "Video segments of zombies pulling the intestines out of other people."

The fu.....?

From Mr Miggle's linked story:

Another player interviewed said McNair didn't look ready for the training session, and according to Walters' report, McNair gained 16 pounds between April 9 and his final workout May 29. McNair also told trainers he hadn't eaten since having a bowl of cereal the morning of the conditioning test, and his gallon of water provided by the team was later found unopened in his locker.

Walters said McNair's heatstroke was "atypical" but pointed to several significant mistakes made by trainers, such as failing to take his vital signs and waiting for more than an hour before calling 911 after he first was symptomatic.

"As much as we hate to say this, Jordan didn't do what Jordan was supposed to do," Jaklitsch said. "A trainer like Wes Robinson thinks a kid's properly hydrated and runs a drill set up for kids that are properly hydrated, and when the kid didn't drink the gallon he knew he had to drink, that's going to send the wrong signal to the person running the drill."

With all the abuse trainer's were giving players for being overweight, it's reasonable to assume McNair ate and drank very little to shave a few pounds for his weigh-in to avoid the bullying.  It's too bad the boosters don't seem to understand this, but I'll bet whatever judge or jury sets a dollar amount in the civil suit won't just blame McNair for his heat stroke.

They're nuts.  From a PR standpoint, Durkin is radioactive now.  The guy's had a player die under his watch, other parents publicly complain about the culture of his program and his own school investigate him for misconduct.  His greatest strength is supposed to be in recruiting, but you can bet that just got a lot harder.  They can find another up-and-comer without all that baggage.

"During meals and in the training room, players were shown graphic videos featuring loud music, violent imagery and animals killing each other. The videos were intended to motivate the players. “There would be videos of animals eating other animals, pulling them apart,” one player said. “Video segments of, like, zombies just pulling out the intestines of other people.”

I concur with the other person who posted about this, which is way beyond the pale. This is disturbing.
