Not true. The clothing itself is not usually taken back. Obviously protective equipment is one thing, but that sort of makes sense in that they are the program's pads right? Jerseys may also be handled separately but the majority of this stuff is 100% kept by them.

That stuff being sold at garage sales is mostly extra apparel, with a few instances of used gear included.

You may want to provide something to back up your claim. They have to buy the Jerseys or have the amount deducted from the allowed gifts for bowl games. The shirts and rings are deducted from their allowed bowl gifts. Helmets and shoulder pads are reused or purchased by the player. All of it may not end up at the garage sale and instead donated to hospitals or auctioned off to raise money for charity. Here's a link to what Oregon does with all of their Jerseys.

You can't believe the stuff these kids were given. The equipment alone was outrageous. They get to keep everything. The shoulder pads the helmets, oh and they gave them a brand new extra helmet they shipped to there house. Not including the all the shoes, flip flops, cleats, polo shirts, sweatshirts, t shirts, practice gear, shorts, sweats, socks. I can't believe what I saw each kid get.

Yes that was a Jordan jump man suit, so much for us only huh. Saw Oregon had Jordan shoes too

Its like this at every major D1 school.  No news.

They can keep everything but the gloves, for whatver reason.  Most schools have someone that has to dispose of gloves after every game.  Not sure why they cant give them away.

As someone who works in athletics at the college level, I love all the gear that is given. Most of the stuff I wear is from the school. There's so much given to everyone and it makes sense. You want the athletes and staff to be showing off the school. It's all about branding.
