I think Herman has some parallels to Jim.  Obviously Houston doesn't have the budget UM has but with the grillz stuff and this he is doing some of the fun and wacky stuff to appeal to recruits and push the brand via social media.  If he can build on what he did 1st year at Houston with a similar 2nd year you probably will see he has that winning gene in him as well.

So let's hope PSU retains Franklin as a 4th coach of this ilk in our division would be wrong!

p.s. I know the kid was from Houston but aside from Gary the most impressive kid in the All Star game Gary was in was another DT who I looked up and was ranked 10th in the nation.  And is going to Houston.

Mcelwain had a pretty solid 1st year considering UF was in as bad of shape as UM coming into this year and they kept winning with defense even when they lost their starting QB.  I can't see him leaving for quite a while unless he turns into Muschamp down the road.

I am scanning the list of guys who are at risk of the "top 20" jobs and PSU and Texas are the 2 that come to mind so I hope Herman is logical and doesnt want to take a job in the same division as Harbaugh Meyer and Dantonio.  In fact I think that is going to hurt PSU in getting a coach when they fire Franklin.  Its fine for Chris Ash and Durkin to get their 1st taste as a HC but an established guy who has a pedigree as HC is going to look at that and be all "no".

Texas A&M is the other that would be a hell of a landing spot if Sumlin continues to Sumlin but like just like in the B10 East why does anyone want to go to the SEC West at this point to face Auburn Bama LSU Ole Mi$$ etc.

Also Houston is spending way more money than Utah ever did - they have a budget like a mid tier P5 right now - they outbid Narduzzi for their DC, they extended HC with a salary way above any non P5 etc.  I wonder if they will push to go to the Big 12.  The alternate theory to Herman jumping is he builds Houston into TCU and Baylor - if they can get into the Big 12.

the Big 12 will not take them, barring some sort of panicky expansion move to not be left behind.

UH brings nothing to the table for the Big 12.  No extra eyeballs for TV revenue in regards to expanding the footprint.

They are hot right now but even still could only sell out their 40,000 seat stadium once last year.  And Herman had to call them out on it to do so.

They are very much like Miami.  A commuter school whose fans are very fickle.  But they don't have the past NC's to throw around.

Yep. Houston isn't going to the Big 12. When/If they do expand, its going to be Cincinnati and Memphis. I have a very good source who says thats pretty much a done deal (again, if they end up having to expand).

My friend (this source) put it pretty succintly: The UT System has no interest in elevating another Texas school that's not within their system. Obviously, the UT System is incredibly powerful in the B12 political landscape, and they already have to elevate a non-UT school in Baylor (which they relucantly agreed to back in 1996). Its not just elevating Houston from a football and athletics standpoint, putting them in the Big 12 also gets them at the doorstep of serious research dollars that the UT System doesn't want to see going to a Texas school not under their governance.

It's shitty, but yeah, unfortunately, UH is the casualty of good ole Texas politics.

What will happen is, Oklahoma has already shown some outward dissatisfaction with the way things are going in that conference, so I can defintitely see them and Oklahoma State leaving together to join the SEC sometime in the next 3-4 years.  What's left in the Big 12 at that point is a bunch of spare parts.  Big Ten would then take Iowa State and Kansas (AAU members, help connect Nebraska, decent basketball and KC market), Kansas State and West Virginia likely get scooped up by the AAC (I think the AAC would take W Virginia back), TCU and Baylor go to the Pac-12 (14?), and Texas ends up independent.  Texas Tech, well who cares.  Someone will take them.

That made me laugh more than it should have.  I really do like what Houston is doing, and I'm terrified of Herman coming to OSU to take over for Meyer.  I REALLY hope Texas boots Smart and they get Herman early.

It was funny and well done.  There are some parallels here.  He has a great future, but I really hope it's not at OSU... I want the coach that rules social media (that is also great at the coaching stuff).
