OT - Texas hires Boise State OC

Submitted by gobluesasquatch on
Texas hired Bryan Harsin to call plays along with Major Applewhite. Should be interesting to see a) how that works out for Texas having to OCs and b) how it affects Boise State.

Also interesting to note: He's 33 I believe and a Boise State lifer. I think that might imply that Peterson isn't planning on going anywhere, ever. (Their DC is also a Boise lifer but a year or two younger than Peterson, so probably a succession threat to Harsin).

So, while we already know this - No Chris Peterson chances.

Les is over 50 yrs old... not too much fire left in that belly I believe. Also, his conduct the last few years has been very shady (concerning what he did to his players and then lying about it). I think that after having lost his OC, Chris Peterson would be willing to hear us out. Hoke is fat... but he loves Michigan. I think he's probably the only one we can definitely get. That being said, seeing Gruden on the sideline would be sweet...

I don't necessarily buy the idea that over 50 - not much fire left in the belly. Nick Saban is 59 and I'd say he still has fire in his belly.

I was reconsidering Gary Pinkel again, but he's Miles age, but gosh, I guess he just looks a young 58.

In the end, you can coach for some time if you have a competent staff and want to do it. Honestly, even if we hire a young coach, I doubt we see the age of coaches working more than 10 years at a school anymore given the ridiculous amount of pressure combined with the huge salaries. We'll see more Urban Meyer situations in the future.

I don't think you are correct - DB said on Wed JH was gone to the NFL - he clearly must have known that before the final firing of Rich Rod, and he fired him anyway.  He didn't have to wait until today and JH's presser to look for other candidates.

I think he has a search plan. No action may just mean he isn't tipping his hand.

He also said he wanted someone that would unify the fan base - you really think Les could do that? The local papers would rip Les up - and then UM gets loads of negative press for a "win at all costs" mentality.

Anyway, I really hope you are wrong.  I would have a hard time watching Lester next fall.

You made me laugh this morning - Brady Hoke, cast as the great unifier of the Michigan fan base.

This does feel like a Hollywood narrative though.  Watching this coaching search unfold, especially the JH saga with with all of the false leads, it feels like I am watching Inception.

What the hell is really going on? It's gotten so bad I am starting to think Gruden could be our next coach - yeah I know that can't be true (I think that I think that anyway).

Does DB really not have a plan to bring in a top-tier guy?  Please, oh please, let him have a plan...

Otherwise I'll end up in a room as an old man, lost in my own mind, unable to get back to reality, waiting for Leonardo Dicaprio to show up and put a bullet in my head.

Just because he wants to unify the fan base, doesn't mean he'll get it.  Just like he said Harbaugh is probably going to the NFL was probably a call out move to make Harbaugh decide very soon if he wanted Michigan or the NFL.  He chose the NFL, fuck him though.  Did I want him to be our coach, despite the comments he made in the past?  Yes.  But he chose the 49ers over us because of a slight increase in money (if any at all).  I hate the whole 'Michigan Man' thing but in my opinion he doesn't love the university like that of Bear Bryant did (Mama called, and when Mama calls, you just have to come running.”)

Who is left that'll unify the fan base and make Michigan open the pocket book like Dave Brandon said they would?  Nobody.  Les Miles is not a good character, sane-minded man in my opinion (oversigning, etc.).  Brady Hoke isn't the big name that'd we have to open the pocket book on (very unproven).  Those are the only names left that are being thrown around still.  I just can't see everybody being happy with any option left and at the same time it being a big named head coach.

That was a ramble/rant, my apologizes (first time I can actually post in the last few days).  Most likely in the end though, it'll be someone out of left field that nobody saw coming, just like Rich Rodriguez.  Who?  I don't know, but I can't think of too many people I'd honestly get excited about...

Solid hire. He seems to pull out "trick plays" quite often, which is exciting for a fan base. Texas will be back to dominating the Big 12 in no time.

He might be someone to consider. Current Head Coach at Air Force, former offensive coordinator with the Houston Texans so it looks like he is able to adjust his offense to his players. Air Force has a run oriented system and obviously the Texans are NFL. He was the QB coach for Ohio, so he has some recruiting experience in the midwest for a MAC school.

His records at Air Force are 9-4, 8-5, 8-5, 9-4.

Before he was the head coach at Delaware, Keeler was the head coach at Division III Rowan(NJ). His teams at Rowan made the Amos Alonzo Stagg Bowl five times, losing each time(it didn't help that they ran into Mount Union in three of those five games). I think very highly of K.C. Keeler-- I've seen his teams play, and he's an excellent coach at that level. I've thought he might be a great fit at Pittsburgh. But I don't think Michigan's looking for a guy who's 1-7 in championship games in FCS and Division III. I just don't think Brandon could sell that hire.

I really think he is an extremely viable option.  I would actually put him at the top of the list.  I do think Hoke is better than any of you do, but Calhoun is younger, experienced and has won at a tough place.  His AF team this year was very impressive (cmmdr-in-chief trophy, near miss against OK, handled BYU and a nice bowl win).  Guy can coach.

Like I said, making Mack Brown look good is a very expensive job. UT has shown for years they feel they need the absolute best of coordinators to surround that hick.

And they almost ALWAYS poach them from other schools instead of developing their own guys.
