OT: Spring Update: Groundhog Day 2019
As many of you already know, today is Groundhog Day and there is good news. Little Punxsutawney Phil came out this morning..... and did NOT see his shadow! of course this means that we will have an early spring.
Now for all the Negative Nancies of the board, consider this: Chicago hit -23 on Wednesday, BUT mother nature has rolled out the welcome mat for Punxsutawney Phil with highs of almost 40 degrees today. that is a 63 degree swing in a matter of days.

Spring literally starts on the same day each year. If you don’t define it by a day, the start of spring is completely subjective and it can only be determined retrospectively. “Gee, our daily high has been no lower than 40 degrees for the last three and a half weeks, so I guess spring came early.” Or “We still have frost and it’s April 23rd. I guess spring is late this year. We’ll have to wait and see how long until we no longer frost to see.” I mean, who’s standard is it if its not a date?
The groundhog has got to be one of the dumbest things we do. But hey, if it brings in tourists to a two-bit Pennsylvania town in the middle of winter, then great, I guess.

Yeah, well, the date on the calendar of the first day of spring is nothing more than the spring equinox or vernal equinox, which means that we will have equal time of night and day. It really says nothing about temperature or climate or anything like that...

It hit 40 where I am in Metro Detroit, so we sat on the porch and listened to the piles of snow begin to hiss and wheeze as they eject liquid water from their base. It was nice.
