Who would want this job? It's like going to fight opponents who are on steroids with two hands tied behind your back.
USC, Ohio St, Michigan, Miami, FSU, Oklahoma, Texas, and the entire SEC have absolutely no restrictions. You don't need to know how to read. You don't have to go to class. They have majors like doobie rollin and pimpology. They can let anyone in, they can let anyone go. They have better looking girls who take their panties off easier. And on and on it goes.It really is hilarious to say the least.
ND needs to drop those teams. ND needs to drop Michigan St. and Michigan as well.
Teams that ND should be playing every year are:
Duke, Minnesota, Rutgers, Army, Navy, Indiana, Rice, Vanderbilt, Wake Forest, Boston College, Pitt, Washington St.

Kelly's players make lots of mistakes (Thank you Tommy Rees for the fake-fetch-the-ball-good-doggie fumble). He's got them so jumpy from constantly screaming at their every move that they can't stay focused. He is the problem, not them.
Why in the world any recruit would choose to play for Kelly over Hoke is beyond me. Even if you are studying to be a Priest.

Notre Dame's average SAT score for their football team was 1022 last season. Ours was 1003. What a competitive disadvantage they're at!

This is amusing, but I don't understand why they keep whining about entrance requirements. ND's problem is not talent. They clearly have a lot. They were competitive in just about every game this year. (Maybe not Stanford, but then, Stanford's a top 5 team.) They just kept on shooting themselves in the foot.

His record speaks for itself. He's got major anger management issues, but he's a good coach.
Fact is Notre Dame historically plays pretty tough schedules and 8-5 back to back is better than the Charlie Weis progression of 9-3, 10-3, 3-9, 7-6 and 6-6. How can you forget that with all of his braggin about x's and o's. Kelly does none of that.
Also, looking at recruiting for ND right now, I believe things could be a lot worse for the Irish. They're doing alright.
On Tommy Rees, these remarks show how stupid some Irish fans are. Rees is only a true sophomore and is already ranked 8th all time in ND passing yards ahead of Tom Clements and Blair Kiel with 61% and 66% completion rate and QB ratings of 132 and 135 respectively. He's improving. The competition from Golson and Hendrix will only make him better next year, plus Brian Kelly is just ridiculous at turning unknown and unrated QBs into highly efficient stars (Curt Anes, Tony Pike, Zac Collaros).
But yeah, the schedule thing sucks. Next year includes Stanford, at MSU, Michigan, Oklahoma, at USC. They should easily beat Navy, Pitt, BYU, Purdue, Boston College, Wake Forest and probably Miami. So they'll have seven wins and probably 9 if they can knock off a weaker MSU and possibly Michigan at home. 9-3 in 2012?

Every QB who commits to Cincinnati or CMU is going to be unknown. Collaros was the #48 rated player in the state of Ohio and a 3-star on Rivals. That is essentially a blue-chip prospect for UC (he was one of just six 3-stars in his recruiting class).
Kelly's record at Cincinnati also followed three years of Mark Dantonio building up that program. After that same three year building period at MSU, Dantonio has gone 21-5 the last two years, one of the most successful stretches in MSU history.
If ND is going to turn the corner it will have to be because of the guys Kelly is bringing in now, and nobody knows if he can build a program at a BCS conference level because he's never done it before (left Cincinnati while his recruits were still freshmen/sophomores). And if he has a plan in place, I for one have no clue what it is. He named Dayne Crist his starting QB after a long offseason battle, then he pulled him after one INT. Then he raved about how the next guy in was "just a winner" and excused a series of ridiculous blunders on his part (SEE dropping the ball against UM) only to eventually start pulling him out of the game because he now wants a running threat at the position. And now they are talking about a guy who is redshirting coming in and being the savior next year because apparently he's awesome at playing the piano. Rees is obviously going to continue to improve as you say, but what is his ceiling (I don't think it is that high)? And what if he gets benched and this learning process starts all over again with another young QB?
Not to mention, this is a team dominated by upperclassmen. I don't see the super talented Kelly recruits pushing anybody out of a starting spot (Lynch is the only young guy I remember on the field last night). Where is the young wideout who is going to be better than Michael Floyd? Better than Eifert? Better than an experienced o-line full of blue-chip recruits? The backfield with way more talent than Wood and Gray? At Michigan the last few years you saw the young players contributing and saw the lack of production from the senior class and could tell that once these guys grew up (Lewan, Roh, Denard, etc.) they would be a very formidable team. I just don't see that happening at ND anytime soon unless Kelly is keeping a bunch of ridiculously awesome young players hidden under lock and key.

If Michigan beats Notre Dame 4 straight years that would be something else (2009, 2010, 2011 and 2012).
Last time that happened was 1987, 1988, 1989 and 1990 in ND's favor against two different UM HC's (Bo and Mo). I guess it would be fitting since Denard Robinson might be Michigan's own version of a Rocket Ismail.

use to be HC at William & Mary, NC State, the NY Jets(bwahahahaha!), Arkansas, Minnesota, and South Carolina too, yet he reserves most the most saliva and homeristic comments for the Notre Dame "Situation Room" on ESPN every fall.
Indeed Notre Dame's problem is their irrational fan base. They do need to dumb-down their schedule a notch or join the Big East or something. Only then they can prance around with 9-3 and 10-2 every year once again and declare "dominance".

i stop and really wonder sometimes just how it is that notre dame can be bad, or not won anything of any real relevance for this long?
i honestly don't think they're going to be that good next year. they still have a qb problem, and floyd's leaving. with us, msu, miami, oklahoma, usc and stanford on the schedule, i'll bet they win 1 of these games, maybe (probably miami). there always just seems to be an intangible problem at nd, despite the talent they bring in.

I could be wrong, but I think Kelly has demonstrated a steady trend of improving his football teams to a very high level over time. In all cases things started off successful, but slow, and gradually built up into some really good football being played.
I'm not a fan of Notre Dame at all, and I've enjoyed the Schadenfreude and Charlie Weis years like nobody's business, but I think Brian Kelly's teams at GVSU, Central Michigan and Cincy all showed considerable improvement and a crescendo in # of victories. It's reasonable to me to expect a similar progression of improved play at Notre Dame over time too (or at least I can see no evidence why he would suddenly start effing up at ND). Yes he berates his players visciously, it's unsightly and not camera friendly, but the acidic cloud of profanity and disgust that Bo Schembechler issued to his charge for 20 years is still circling over Greenland and likely the cause of "global warming". I'm not phased by rated R language from college football coaches.
On recruiting I've followed Scout mostly and so I see Kelly has another Top 10 class (ranked 8th) for 2012 going on, which is basically identical to their 8th ranking on Scout for the 2011 class, and there's still a month to go. Outside of a significant number of delusional Irish football fans, I certainly don't see the ND football program in disarray or that the sky falling for Kelly.
As for the 2011 season, Notre Dame theoretically *should* have hit 9 or 10 wins, but didn't. The lost to 5-7 USF was inexplicable. Michigan beat ND on a last second play, and they beat a lousy 6-6 Pitt team by a 4th qtr TD pass (a.k.a. a butthair). All the other pieces sort of fell where expected. All of the other games ND either won or lost decisively.

I wouldn't call the wins against Pitt, BC or Wake decisive wins. They were losing to Pitt in the 4th quarter, were losing to Wake at halftime and beat BC by 2 pts.

The best part of the FSU game was watching Kelly trying not to scream at his QBs. He wanted to go off on them so bad, but learned his lesson from earlier in the year.
