OT: B1G East Division Spring Games - OSU, PSU, and MSU

Submitted by Amazinblu on April 15th, 2023 at 2:03 PM

It’s a very nice Saturday - weather wise - in B1G East country.

BTN is broadcasting three games.  The Buckeyes (which is about to end), which will be followed by the games from State College and East Lansing.

Are you watching?   If so - any perspectives?   What are you looking for?  Do you care?

It seems like all of the teams have a question mark - or competition - for their starting QBs.

As they say - “keep your friends close, and your enemies closer.”

Enjoy…

As I watch these Spring games, I fear a solution to decrease the length of college football games is being attempted.   What is that?   Reduce the time of each quarter - from 15 to twelve or ten minutes instead.  Use a running clock.  Limited commercial interruptions and media timeouts.

Candidly, the first two don’t appeal to me - but, reduced commercial / media timeouts - is pretty nice.

Yeah, no. I don’t think the powers that be will ever reduce the amount of time for games. Why would they do that when $$ is being made hand over fist with ad revenue? They do attempt to “trick” the viewers by often showing on-field game footage side by side with ads during quick timeouts but thats not really the same.

Maybe they would attempt to shorten the play clock (if that’s even possible) but the total time won’t be affected. MLB shortened games through the pitch clock addition but it’s not like they removed the 8th or 9th innings…

Actually, I was speaking to a college replay official for the ACC who indicated that one of the contemplated rule changes under consideration by the NCAA is elimination of clock stoppages after first downs, a radical change that is being considered to shorten game length.

Ostensibly, the clock was stopped after first downs to give chain crews time to mark a new LOS.

But now it's under consideration because the networks and schools acknowledge that three-plus hour game times are out of hand. Still, I was pretty shocked to hear about this proposal considering how this particular rule is one that differentiates the college and pro game so dramatically and plays into college offensive strategies. We shall see how it goes.

One comment from the broadcasters about PSU’s QBs that was interesting is: there are only two things the QBs are missing - consistency and accuracy.

I hope they can maintain that for Michigan’s visit to Happy Valley this fall.

And, perhaps it’s me - but it sounds like they’re playing Springsteen over the address system while plays are running.

I am going to post updates in your thread since it was first…

TOP comment from Millen thus far in the PSU broadcast “we are less than 2 minutes left in the first half and what we haven’t seen is accuracy or consistency from either quarterback”

The backup QB looks like Trace McSorley lite - maybe a better runner but not much of a passer.  His “long” completion before the FG was not televised as they interviewed the new PSU hoops coach.

@#&$&!!  Beat again - this time by the post above…

With the caveat that we can’t draw much from a small sample size involving a freshman, my impression of Drew A was that he’s a big, strong guy with a big, strong arm — but one who looked like an absolute statue out there. He seemed immobile and stiff and old-timey. Defenses absolutely teed off on him. Unless he’s another Dan Marino, he might not square with the modern game.

Just in case my duplicate OP gets deleted..

”Matthew loves ball” channel has a 2-part video of highlights from the M spring game on YouTube- basically an “every snap” video.

I would guess they will do the same for these games if you chose to be outside instead today and are reading this after the fact.

So far, the MSU spring game has been 15 minutes of stretching, 10 minutes of Izzo being interviewed, and 5 minutes of commercials.

1) OSU is loaded. Didn't watch much but what I saw is they have good RB. The defense gave up a long ala Donovan Edwards type run that went to the house. That means they might have the same issues going into the fall season.

2) PSU: Matt Millen tried to put lipstick on a pig concerning QB play. There was a lot of hype that they have the two best RB tandem in the country. Oh wait: What about Michigan? Penn State could be in for a down year with an anemic offense.

3) MSU: Another Mel Tucker sh!t show. Lots of stretching. He did that last spring because he had nothing to show the fans or Big-10 nation. Same thing again this year. What do the Spartans have?-Not much to show.

PSU: I didn't watch the spring game (there are 7,000,000,000 better things to do than watch spring football), but a quick perusal of the PSU board says the defense was absolutely awesome, and QB will be fine.

So, I guess we're in for the annual talk of the May-June-July-August period.  For the next 4 months, the PSU homers think this is the year PSU beats both U-M and OSU.  From May-August, this board typically thinks this is the year PSU gets passed by Maryland and finishes 4th in the division.

Both will probably be wrong (yet again).

Spartan fans are definitely getting their monies worth today.

Yes, Admission to their Spring “game” was free, hopefully, parking was free too - oh, and concessions were free too.
