Ohio State's Passing Offense

Submitted by kaykaybroke on

Well I'm sick of all the Urban Meyer freakout posts so saw this little bit in a Rivals column and thought it pointed out some interesting stats.

Ohio State is 118th in the nation in pass offense, ahead of only Army and Navy, both of whom run the triple option. The Buckeyes average 114.0 passing yards per game and are completing just 47.5 percent of their passing attempts. They've thrown for just 1,254 yards and 23 percent of that - 293 - came in the opener against FCS member Youngstown State. The second-highest total was 189 yards, in the second game, against Toledo; that means that almost 40 percent of their season passing total came in the first two games. The Buckeyes have reached their per-game average just once in the past six games, and they've thrown for fewer than 100 yards in five of the past six games and six times total this season. Ohio State has completed 34 passes combined in the past six games. An offense that one-dimensional is not going to be enough to beat Michigan next week, which means the Wolverines look to be in excellent shape to snap their seven-game losing streak in the series.

Here's the original link for the whole article, which deals with the conference championship races

With the way our offense has handled QB/RB duo option threats like Scheelhaase/Ford, and Martinez/Burkhead, I gotta think we can contain Braxton Miller and Boom Herron enough to get the win.

I'm more worried about Posey and Stonebuner...

Similar to Floyd and Rudolph in 2010 @ ND.

We're going to have to load up to stop that duo of Miller and Herron. And Illinois had a great WR in Jenkins, but no #2 option and Floyd played OUT OF HIS MIND!

I think Posey may be the best WR in the league...toss in Stoneburner and we're certainly going to have our hands full. Especially the way Miller buys time.

We're going to have to dominate the Ohio OL and confuse Miller with our blitzes...get to him early and maintain or lanes like we did Martinez.

I think we're going to see more shotgun from Ohio that they've run in the past...they're not going to line up and push us around. Not anymore. Not this year.

But if they mix and match, it's probably their best option.

Here's to our back 7 having the best game of the season, hell, the whole team having it's best game...what am I talking about?

...I don't know if we can expect TOP like we had vs. Nebraska, but we're going to have to hold on to the ball and prevent 3 and outs. Someone is going to have to beat it into Denard that he's going to have to run and pick up first downs with his legs. 3rd and 9 amazing plays to Tay Odoms are AWESOME, but we can't bank on those. He has to manage the game and simply be able to pick up the first down and keep the chains moving. If anyone who knows Denard reads this...BEG HIS PLEEEEASE! Denard, please don't be afraid to run for 6 on 3rd and 5.

their smartest, most efficient game of the year. Cannot let Posey get behind them. That's tsio's only shot, outside of screens to rb's & wr's....slip screens/bubble screens, etc. Contain Herron...most notably, cut back lanes & we'll be fine. 0-1 turnovers from Denard = win by 10+

A passing offense that needs to be crushed. The players mostly are good guys I would bet, but we must crush them.

What are the chances of Miller does what Smith did to us in 2004???   (And he better not!! omg, I hated him).  I ask because, the one and only CTSV sales man Sam Webb mentioned Smith's game this morning and it got me thinking.  I remember those days and although by most standards we had a considerably good defense, it seemed we always struggled against that a-hole.  Good thing is that I don't feel this years defense will have a problem with millers scrambling.  Our D has shown me over and over again that they can contain people and stay true to their gaps.  I see Miller scrambling but I don't see him rushing for more than 80 yards.  I also see him possibly turning the ball over at least once.

As a side note, since I don't have enough points to post .. how many hours do you see yourself following Michigan sports??  That's the million dollar question for me tonight.  I was on my way to root against the Bucks tonight in bball and this question came to mind.  I feel, especially during football season, I'm completely consumed and now since we add in basketball and hockey of late, it's ridic.  I would say I spend about 5 hours a day surfing the web, listening to the radio or following this blog.  Are you over or under???  Please give me a benchmark, as I've seen my interest progressively becoming more and more involved with Michigan.  I have always been a fan since I was young but when I became a student it spiked and now I feel it's off the charts.

GO BLUE Damnit and please beat OSU ... and Coach Hoke when we are up by 30, go for 2!! .. That'd instantly catapult you to the top of my favorite coaching list.

We will win by 30 points on Saturday. Nobody wants to be confident, and I get it. I've suffered through the last 7 years with all of you and I attended a few of them in miserable weather. It's now our time to get revenge. This will be a statement game. Our defense will demolish their running game, and that's all they have. I can't wait to watch it all go down, and I will be recording this so I have a go to "get in a good mood" cd to fall back on. Go Blue!
