Notes from Harbaugh's show

Submitted by PeteM on

I had a chance to go Harbaugh's radio show tonight, which was running back-focused with Wheatley and De'veon Smith taking up the second half hour.

There were a couple of things that stood out.  Harbaugh described Jake Butt as a "Swiss army knife" since he can play on the line, in the backfield, spread wide or in the slot.  Not surprisingly, he was also still ticked about the intent to deceive call.  He praised Rudock's play Saturday, and said that Rudock was "smarter than any of us" adding that he expected him to be a skilled surgeon someday.

De'veon might have been the most interesting interview.  He said that until this year he wasn't taught how to pass block properly (something Brian has mentioned in connection with Fitz's improvement in the NFL).  He drew some laughs saying that Brady Hoke fell asleep on his family's couch when he came to recruit him.

Wheatley didn't say a lot that stood but did talk about the importance of mentors.  He said that he was the first in his family to go to college, which meant that we had issues with school he looked to coaches for guidance and that he hoped to fill that role for current players.

What exactly did the last staff do other than recruit? I have this picture in my head of meetings with cookies & milk, puzzles, board games, and the occasional film study.

That's precisely my reaction to that photo too.  The mom is not only cleaning the dishes, she's teaching the daughter how to do that -- while dad and son are relaxing, playing a game.  In 2015, even nearly at age 50, I don't remember how incredibly mysogenistic and stereotypical American culture used to be about these things.  A stupid game board advertisement reinforcing the male/female role notions.  What on earth is the point of drawing mom and sister in the background like that?  Why did the artist(s) (obviously male) find that background was useful to selling the product?  I would guess that was probably a no-brainer, like, no one questioned the drawing at the time.  1940's, 1950s, that's just a picture of suburban life.  Yet the incredibly subtle reinforcement of the message is so powerful.  This is like a tiny look at a very evil, pernicious part of our history.

For the record, I clean the kitchen each night or morning.  And my daughters (teens) probably couldn't tell you the difference between a sink and a dishwasher.

I saw that on Twitter and could not even process that.

Granted, it takes some time to find and vet a highly rated sofa that you feel that you could develop into a sofa that would be utilized on Sundays, but I cannot imagine being a recruit and having the head coach of a storied program fall asleep in your own home like that.

Brady Hoke approached couch surfing with an enthusiasm unknown to mankind.

You know how your uncles pass out after Thanksgiving dinner?  I imagine Hoke lasted 20 minutes post Mone family meal (remember that spread!!??)

Do I leave this here?  When asked on radio show what he'd do differently, Hoke replied "I'd teach players on offense to pass protect."

The Smith comments (both of them) would have angered me a few months ago but #Harbaugh.

This is yet another data point about how the kids weren't being coached basics.  Now they are and it shows on the field...like night and day.

Interestingly I think coaches NOT teaching the basics is sort of the norm in CFB now.  There are exceptions to the rule and those coaches always seem to field competitive teams.

A nap- something Hoke could actually execute.

Listen, I went to college and I woke up many times with friends sleeping on my couch, but that was usually due to that evenings festivities. Was Hoke sleeping it off before returning to his own couch? Perhaps this explains why the team was so mismanaged, he was sleeping on the job.
