In-N-Out Burger vs. Five Guys? Popeye's vs. Chick-fil-A?

The  Charbonnet transfer thread below got off on a tangent re: In-N-Out Burger.

Got me to thinking about the on-going debates re: burger and chicken spots.  I haven't seen a thread addressing this vital issue, so my apologies if this is a redundant topic.

I personally find almost all of them to be overrated.  Most are just slight variations on the burger or chicken theme...with nothing really special to distinguish one brand over another.

What's the allure of Chick-fil-A?  The chicken is fine...but nothing special.  The waffle fries are likewise just meh.  We drove past their new location at 8 Mile/Haggerty and there were two lines of cars about 15/20 deep.

Give me a local slider joint like Hunter House over any of the national chains...and I've had some really tasty hand-made chicken tenders at various local restaurants.

What say you about this important topic?

In-N-Out?  Five Guys?  White Castle?  Whataburger?  Culver's?  Red Robin?  Shake Shack?

Chick-fil-A?  Popeyes?  KFC?  Buffalo Wild Wings?  Gus's?

It depends on where you live.

Chick-fil-A is like Waffle House (which isn't a favorite of mine but the point stands)...it's better in the south. Add Bojangles into that as well.

By better, what I probably mean is more consistent.

For me, Chick-fil-A is hands down better than Popeyes in every category. I like that chicken sandwich that Popeyes has, but it tastes too "fast foody" to me. It's like the best McChicken sandwich anyone could ever have.

Chick-fil-A is in its own category.

Same with In-N-Out, if you're on the west coast and know what to order and HOW to order, it's better than being a visitor. Same could be said for Cookout in NC.

Five Guys is too greasy for the bun they use...it's just dough wrapped in tin foil by the time you get it. It's disgusting. The actual patty is solid, but a burger includes a bunch.

All that said, I stopped eating fast food for the most part...support local spots and just get take out. Fast food is still fast food.

For me the new fast food is just calling up a favorite place and getting my food to go...still not as good as cooking it myself, but better than a drive thru.

Five guys and popeyes!

Cajun fries are better than anything on in-and-out’s menu. Spicy chicken sandwich beats chick-fil-a’s bland tasting stuff

Been to BWW twice.

Been to Blimpy's twice.

Went to State St. 5 guys once.

Went to Hunter House once.

Haven't been to White Castle since I was in HS.

Never been to In-N-Out.

Or Whataburger.

Or Culver's.

Or Red Robin.

Or Shake Shack.

Or Chick Fil A.

Or Popeye's.

Or Pizza Hut.

Never had a Wendy's hamburger.

Never heard of Gus's.

CFA all the way.  Spicy grilled is exceptional.  And the peppermint shakes at Christmas are as good in reality as my romanticized notions of the Shamrock Shakes of my youth.

IMO the Popeyes chicken sandwich is better than the Chick-fil-A chicken sandwich. However, one often overlooked point is that Chick-fil-A offers a deluxe option with pepper jack cheese & lettuce. I wish Popeyes did the same.

Chick Fil A.  Popeyes sandwich is bigger, but taste very bland  CFA is amazing

Five Guys, but not a fan of the fries. The burgers are great.

Used to live in South Carolina, so I’ve had Zaxby’s, Bojangles, Raising Cane’s, Cookout, and Chick Fil A.  Now live in Michigan (where I grew up) so I’ve eaten a lot of Culver’s, and I’ve had Shake Shack, and get Popeyes occasionally.  I go to Vegas every year, and have had In n Out 3-4 times.  I am a fast food fanatic, so I feel pretty qualified to share my thoughts on this topic.  In my opinion, Popeyes chicken sandwich is the best, but nothing else there is special, and their service is fucking terrible.  Chick Fil A serves 20 vehicles in the time Popeyes gets through five, and therefore I get CFA far more often.  Bojangles seasoned fries are the absolute best fries in the business, and their chicken biscuits are pretty tasty as well.  Damn I miss that place.  For burgers, I’ll take Culver’s.  They’re the perfect size, and their produce is very good quality.  In n Out is decent for the money, but like everyone else has said, their fries are subpar.

I haven't tried In-N-Out, but:

Raising Canes > Popeyes >> Chick-fil-A >>>>> Other chicken

The Popeyes spicy chicken sandwich and the Canes chicken fingers are in close competition for the best single item.

Nobody's brought up Cook Out, the NC-based fast food chain, that's my favorite fast food burger, plus great shakes, and the prices are ridiculously good, fries are terrible though.

In-n-out are ok burgers, what’s great about it is the value (how cheap they are vs quality). Other places have better burgers just more expensive. I love in SF and work a mile from an in-n-out and I am still shocked at the lines. Good burgers but way overhyped.

Geneva burgers FTW. Used to be at Harper and Cadieux, now they are on the north side of 8 mile just west of Kelly. Delicious just like Hunter House, Bray's, Telway etc...

All fast food is terrible. In n Out has the worst fries of any place ive been. Much rather find some hole in the wall owned and run by people who care about food.

I am a bit late here, but as a native Californian, the quality of in n out is not the defining factor. In n out has a similar quality burger to five guys for less than half the cost. The fries at in n out are bad, but burger, fries, and a shake for 7 dollars is unheard of these days. The bang for ones buck is hard to beat.

I would *love* if we had White Castle in Washington State, but no luck.  White Castle is an acquired taste, though, like smoking.  And I have a suspicion that the White Castle chain, like a vampire, cannot cross too much running water, and thus ends at the Mississippi River.

I like In-N-Out burgers.

Five Guys is OK, but only a small step above Wendy's in my view.

Haven't had a Whattaburger or Shake Shack or Culver's.

Red Robin is crap here in Redmond, WA.  I used to like Red Robin about 25 years ago in California.  In LA area for burgers, I loved Islands.

For chicken, I think Chick Fil A nuggets are good, but I wish we had Popeyes nearby.

My favorite burger places around Redmond are Burgermaster and Tipsy Cow (specifically the burger named "The Arsonist").

Some people don’t like Popeye’s because they are usually in “bad” neighborhoods.  I’d never been to one other than the [Detroit airport] but sought them out when I heard about the spicy chicken sandwich.  It was pretty fantastic for fast food.
when I lived in LA I liked In and Out, but I typically don’t eat BK or McDonald’s so hard to say if it was better.  5 guys is way better, but way overpriced.  Doesn’t 5 Guys have a Michigan connection?

I used to occasionally go to the original Five Guys in Alexandria VA before they franchised out. Once saw Sandra Day O’Connor outside while her driver was picking up her order.

You know I remember Popeyes being like that when they opened in Lansing. I now live in NC and lived in FLA with Chick Fila backed up everywhere - even those who’ve had it for years....definitely the  waffle fries for me

For me, it's difficult to choose. I adore In-N-Out Burger but I don't have it around. Only Whataburger which I don't really like but I have no other options. Well, I can eat a prime brandt beef burger at my fav restaurant https://www.summerhousesm.com/ but I think it can't take part in this competition since we talk about fast foods. When it comes to chicken I choose Chick-fil-A or BWW. KFC can't compete with them.
