My brother-in-law gave me some homemade Scotch ales just for MACtion, which obviously I do not intend to watch while completely sober, but that simply adds to the magic of MACtion.

Definitely going to watch Western Michigan / Ball State out of respect for my many WMU alum friends.

but they're definitely going to get the Colt Brennan & Hawaii treatment in a New Years 6 bowl if they make it. I just don't see them holding up against a top 10 team.

I don't know the exact rule but the highest ranked 'group of five' team at years end gets an auto-bid to a NY6 bowl which is the new equivalent of the BCS: Rose, Sugar, Cotton, Orange, FIesta and Peach

Since Fiesta & Peach are the semis this year, Western could get an auto-bid to the Rose, Sugar, Cotton or Orange bowl against some other top 15 team

This is basically correct but I think it's the highest-ranked G5 *champion*. That's why Boise State's loss to Wyoming was such a dagger, because now they're a game back to even get to their league title game.

The saving grace for WMU is that unlike the BCS-busting days there are now two additional bowls, so they get to play a ~#11 team instead of a ~#7 team. Mandel's bowl projections had them playing Penn State. I wouldn't bet on Western but I could see them making a game of that.

Brady Hoke took over a worse program than what Fleck did and led them to a 12-1 season.

Fleck is overrated. Western has had a solid program for a good 15 years now. Gary Darnell and Bill Cubit had success at WMU. Granted, Fleck is taking it to another level, but Hoke did the same at Ball State with a weaker program.

Whoever hires Fleck will be taking a risk. MAC coaches tend to be boom-or-bust. For every Kill and Kelly there is a Hoke and Hazell.
