Matt Millen Needs a Heart Transplant - Stat

Submitted by xtramelanin on

Mates,

On the serious side of things, read a report that Millen is seriously ill, like count the days kind of ill and in need of a heart transplant.  Say what you will about his tenure at the Lions, dude had a pretty stellar playing career and from what I understand is a decent dude off the field.

38 rounds of chemo and needs a new heart. Stoically, he says 'If I croak, I croak'.

Anyway, we all get cranked up here about sports and other trivial stuff and sometimes you re-set just a little bit.  I don't think I'd be anywhere near as calm as Millen appears to be if they were counting me out by the day.

So sad. Honestly I always thought he seemed like a good dude. Prayers for him.

I made the mistake of reading the comments on Facebook, and there was no shortage of jokes from Lions fans.

You're 100% correct about Matt Millen being one of the good guys, XM.  I recall reading (probably in one of the Detroit papers or on MLive) a rather long article/interview a few months ago with Millen in which he discussed his health problems and his sense of peace with whatever awaits him.

Unfortunately, though, timing is crucial in that for Millen to be the beneficiary of such surgery, someone else with the right donor profile must 1) be an organ donor, and 2) pass away.   Unfortunately also, not enough folks take the time to register as potential donors or at least leave recorded instructions to their loved ones of their wish to be donors.

A lot of the "Millen defended Paterno, so screw Matt Millen" opinions come as a result of Millen's comments on ESPN SportsCenter within 60 minutes of the Freeh Report was released.

Millen probably shouldn't have gone on air.  He did go on-air (likely ESPN's idea), so he has to own it to a degree.  But I'll cut Millen some slack: not much time to process the Freeh Report, especially when you look up to the guy as a mentor (as Millen did with Paterno).

Millen's opinions as regards Paterno in the post-2012 era aren't anywhere near those of, say, Franco Harris.  For what that's worth.

I hope he gets the help he needs, as I would anyone w a life threatening condition - but stop w the bullshit, turning him into a "good dude".

He screamed at Johnny Morton and called him a "faggot", defended Paterno", and made several other unprofessional statements that showed his classless true colors.

Contrary to probably many on this board, I always liked Matt Millen as a color analyst on BTN.  Thoughts and prayers are with him and his family.

I hope for the best for him.  As far as I know he kept his nose clean and did try hard when running the Lions - so no one should be vindictive towards that part of his life.

MM was a tough hard nose player I agree.

I think he was terrible on TV.

We don't need to even discuss the Lions.  I wish him well with his health issues.

I hope he doesn't get stuck with his jock strap on the field.

Wishing him luck is sorta like wishing bad luck to a donor but that's the nature of the business.

I really hated it that he single handedly kept Barry Sanders from coming back.

But right now I don't care. I can only hope and wish the best for him.

Very sad to hear. I wonder if the cancer and chemo led to the weakening heart or enlarged heart. I hope he can kick cancer, get a heart transplant and be a color commentator in 2019.
