M 5th in latest Director's Cup standings
Michigan is in 5th place in the latest NACDA Director's Cup standings released today, after a 4th place finish in both wrestling and women’s swimming and diving, and 45th place in men’s indoor track and field.
Of note: The Big Ten leads all Division I conferences with four institutions in the top-10 – Penn State (2nd), Wisconsin (3rd), Michigan (5th) and Ohio State (8th).
MSU is 27th, if anyone cares.

After coach B, Mo, Z, Duncan, MAAR, Livers, Matthews, Poole, Teske, and Simmons do their thing.
Top 5 is an impressive feat and an improvement over recent years. Warde Manuel is doing his thing. I think we can realistically hope and expect to remain in the top 5 for years to come.
Michigan is almost Always in the Top 5-10...

Given that this is a blog dedicated to discussing whether one particular school is good at sports, the release of a "how good is each school at sports" rating might actually be worthy of discussion.
WTF is your problem?

What does it mean if my football team scores more points than your football team?
(Other than that you will suffer humiliation, I mean.)
You post rountinely. Does anyone really care? No.

1) We are 5th right now, but USC is 4th by only a couple of points. We will certainly pass them on April 2nd and come close to Wisconsin for 3rd.
2) You noted Sparty in 27th. That is 6th in the conference but currently shows all ZEROS for the winter sports counted so far. Of course they will get a few sympathy points for the "showing" in the Tourney.......
USC will probably pick up some spring points in volleyball, tennis , women's soccer and swiming and diving, so they could stay ahead.

No one will beat Standord ever because of the ridiculous sports that go into calculating this.
They did just change the rules, but Stanford rules sports like 1 person rowing, and aerobic logarithms.
It will be exceedingly difficult to knock them down.
Its a nice idea, but its not indicative of what school dominates sports people actually care about, in general.
Yes, I know the parents care, but this is a nice idea gone terribly wrong.

Stanford only has a couple of sports that count that Michigan doesn't have, and none of them are really ridiculous (men's water polo, men's volleyball, fencing). Michigan has two sports that Stanford doesn't (hockey & men's lacrosse), so the "number of sports" factor isn't really a thing.
Multiple national championships every year. Yes, in "country club" sports like swimming and golf and tennis, but still real sports that real people watch on television, even if only once every 4 years.
The first year of the Cup (1993-94), Stanford came in 2nd. North Carolina was 1st that year, Michigan 9th. Stanford has finished 1st every single year since.
Michigan's highest finish was 2nd in 2003-04, and we've finished 3rd a few times (1999-00, 2007-08, 2015-16). Our worst finish was 25th in 2009-10.
If you total up all points since that inaugural 93-94 season (which has issues, because the scoring has changed slightly over the years, so doing it this way would weight some years more heavily), Michigan is 5th overall. Yes, I have done this. I have a spreadsheet that compiles everyone's points each year, because I want to punch my ticket to nerd heaven when I die.
The overall top 10 are:
1. Stanford
2. UCLA
3. Florida
4. North Carolina
5. Michigan
6. Texas
7. USC
8. Ohio State
9. Penn State
10. Georgia

36. Michigan State

2016. Last NCAA title winning team was 2014.
We will score a lot of points in the remaining winter sports:
M Swimming: 1 Stanford 7 Mich 16 OSU.....
M Gym: 2 Stanford 5 PSU 7 OSU 8 Mich
W Gym: 7 Mich 24 OSU...
M BBall: Mich (16, still playing), OSU round 32
W BBall: Stanford (16, still playing), Mich round 32, OSU round 32
Hockey: OSU (4), Mich (8), PSU (11) all in 16-tourney
Fencing: 3 OSU, 4 PSU
Bowling: n/a
I could see us easily in the top 3 heading into spring. We will score points with stanford in spring with softball, tennis, water polo, rowing (golf?) etc to jump the other b1g schools who suck at these, but stanford will win national championships. 2nd place is within reach. We also could score points in M Lacrosse for the first time. It's been awhile since Football, M BBall, W BBall, and Hockey all scored in the same season (if ever?) We generally have PSU and OSU, someimes Wiscy in our range after winter, but we are one of the few schools who also competes well in the spring with the West Coast teams, so we usually pass them and duke it out with UCLA, USC, UNC for top 3
Your last sentence really sums it up.
The funny thing is, I've heard Michigan State fans claim Michigan fans are "jealous" because Michigan State is "better at sports", as if "sports" are simply football and men's basketball.
Michigan doesn't win this because they don't cheat like Stanford.
