Jabrill Peppers: CBS NFL 1st Round Pick Projection (Spoiler Alert: He gets to play with Denard)

Submitted by boliver46 on

As founder, chairman, AND president of the "One More Year Jabrill" foundation, I am disconcerted at NFL projections already making the way around The Internets.

I am further disheartened by the projections of WHERE he might go.

I wish to start a GoFundMe account to keep him in school and avoid being selected here...

Yes, I know...mock drafts be damned.

Their projection:

4. Jacksonville Jaguars

Jabrill Peppers, SS, Michigan: Entering a contract year, Johnathan Cyprien has yet to cement himself as a starting-caliber safety. An above average athlete, Peppers can do just about everything on the football field.

At least one person will be happy about this should it come to fruitiion.

p.s. Jabrill should be #1.  Obviously.

...while it lasts, because I can't imagine JP turning down the opportunity to be a top-5 draft pick, or anywhere in the first round for that matter.  Especially after seeing how it's worked out so far for Jourdan Lewis, who likely would have been a low first rounder last year.

I've asked my source on the team about Peppers plans, he tells everyone he plans to stay 1 more year and get his degree, obviously that can change in a minute but I heard he's made promises to family members about getting a degree

for someone to return to school and pick up one year's worth of credits. Granted, it does get more difficult the longer you stay out of school.  However, it can and has been done and he seems to be one of the most determined young men I've ever became aware of.

It would be very, very difficult to turn down number 4 type money knowing the above. I'd love him to stay, pray he doesn't get injured and pick up an even bigger check after his senior year going no lower than the same number 4. But c'mon man. That's a huge chunk of green. it takes many of the top professional golfers, minus enrosements, two to three seasons to obtain that amount.

If he's projected as a top-5 pick at the end of the season, or even a top-10 pick, and he's healthy, he needs to declare and not think twice about it.

That's a ton of money he'd be turning down to come back and risk getting injured next year. Money that can set he and his family up for life. Of course I'd love for him to stay, but I wouldn't blame him for one second if he left. He's gotta think about him.

I'm pretty curious to see where Peppers will end up, position wise, in the NFL. I'm a little concerned that Kiper had a point where one of the great things about Peppers in college could be somewhat of a hindrance in the NFL. He doesn't (yet) seem to have a natural position. He can of course do a ton of things really well, but is he too small to be an NFL linebacker? Are his coverage skills good enough to be an NFL safety?

I don't know, I'm not a savvy X's and O's guy, but it's just something I've thought about.

Aren't insurance policies available for kids who stay in school in lieu of the NFL draft? You'd think Lloyds of London or somebody would offer something against career ending injury. Not that it'd replace a lost $50M or $100M career, but if a kid blows out his knee he gets $5M or $10M which should be more than enough to set up his immediate family in relative comfort. Or am I wrong on that?
