I am sorry I missed the inside info, but, WHAT THE HELL HAPPENED WITH BOB SHOOP?!

Submitted by Rickett88 on January 21st, 2021 at 12:00 PM

Again, I apologize if this was talked about, but deep in a comment thread that I missed, but can someone please explain what went on with Bob Shoop now that he is gone.

I feel like everyone has talked around it, and maybe for good reason, but a little info would be nice.

(... and start sarcastic comments, but I can't be the only one, right? ... right?... just me?)

That might have been the easiest money ever made if he was paid in full!

Make several hundred thousand dollars and contribute nothing.  Where can I get some employment like that?

Maybe I'm remembering incorrectly, but I thought someone had said basically he did something on campus very early on that would bar him from stepping foot on campus again, and while they never said what it was, it was obviously something you wouldn't legally or socially want to talk about, so it's never been disclosed.  Could be totally wrong, but I'm also not sure why he also wasn't fired if he literally couldn't come to work due to a personal mishap.

Or it's Covid related.  Who the hell knows?

A complete rumor was that there was a harassment complaint against him and he was later exonerated. But I would think if true there would be a public record. A second rumor was an altercation with another coach. The first one would seem more true given how it played out.

No idea the voracity of either of these.

The facts are, him and Nua went too far playing gay chicken. Everybody ended up with pink eye on the team, set them back an additional couple days of practice.  Everything else you are hearing is just pure speculation

I have no answers and no inside intel but I have thought about it a lot and come down to two things it could be.

One is that he has a pre-existing condition or one of his family members does and he needed to opt out of the season and bunker down through the pandemic, which angered Harbaugh but would not play well in the media. Why they haven't said so could go back to future chances for employment if he has a medical condition, or football coaches being weird about admitting any kind of weakness.

The other is that he committed some kind of crime that got him barred from campus but cannot be used to fire him without due process, eg sexual harassment. This has happened before at Michigan and other schools, where like a provost hit on a professor and is given a leave of absence while the incident is being investigated, because if you fire someone for sexual harassment without an investigation they can sue you.

The only thing I don't understand was if he wasn't available for whatever reason at all, and there are other circumstances that force you to continue to pay him, why would you not change his role at the same pay and just bring in a new safeties coach that will actually - you know - coach?

I actually don't care as much about what happened to him / what he might have done or not done.  I care much much more that we essentially had no coach for Daxton Hill.  How the fuck is there not a way around the circumstances to get your kids actual coaching?  It's pretty clownish.

The NCAA limits you to 10 assistant coaches.  As long as Shoop was employed, he still counted as one of the 10, AFAIK.

Now you still have grad assistants, "quality control" guys and whatnot available to help coach, but they might not do as good of a job.

Demoting a guy because he opted out (or otherwise had a health issue) during Covid sounds like an invitation to get sued.

A more plausible argument is that we maybe could have found someone to take a job as a defensive analyst, but I don’t know what the timeframe was or who would have been out there.  For a long time we didn’t know if there would even be a season.

Changing his title doesn't get you around the NCAA limit without a waiver from the NCAA, once you've named your 10 assistants. If we were Ohio State we could have just gotten a waiver, like they did when they hired Urban Meyer during the 2011 season and he was allowed to recruit as an extra assistant. But we're not Ohio State so we can't get such a waiver.

something happened off the field non-football related. it wasn't something that should have happened. he's gone accordingly. if it becomes public then everyone will find out.

Ummmm.... He's the head coach of Michigan. Harbaugh resigned and after a heated coaching search, Manuel decided to promote internally. Shoop was the obvious choice.
