Hackett on the AD Budget, Harbaugh, etc

Submitted by The Mad Hatter on

From Angelique at the Detroit News.  The former AD who shall not be named has saved the AD quite a bit of money by getting a job tending to a giraffe.

Michigan interim athletic director Jim Hackett said what he told the UM Regents in May would be a nearly $8 million budget deficit will be significantly lower than expected.

Jim (has been) up in his room (in Chicago) writing practice plans. He never stops. I don't think he sleeps."

"Tweeting about academic performance. I've been watching the camps, how he's teaching the kids. He's a fantastic, inspirational guy. I see that all levels of the operation – he's a very inspiring guy on deeper missions about life, on self-improvement."

The tweets about academics are one of the aspects of the transparency that I like about Harbaugh's style. You have to think that players see these, just like they will the charts of drill and practice performance, and set their goals accordingly. It sort of reminds me of Lear Corporation's old motto - "Advance Relentlessly" - which I always thought was a cool message.

"Every time I stick my nose into a sense of that, the robustness of it is really good. This is why I was happy and I'm even more delighted."

Wait, did Hackett just compare Jim Harbaugh to wine?

Also, I love his comment on marginal cost calculations. In layman's terms, you get what you pay for (in this case, at least).

Hackett has literally been the best thing we could have wished for. He actually listened to the fans and was able to get harbaugh. Best offseason ever.

"Brandon was to receive $3 million over four years, but because he is now CEO at Toys R Us, Michigan's budget will get a break."

Shitty reporting. What is "the break"? Do they have to pay none of the buyout now? Some of it? How much did they already pay before he got the Toys 'R' Us job? None of this is answered.

"So you see, it's almost insignificant to pay the extra money . . . it's an investment beyond the economics. It's the standard that's created of excellence that is invaluable."

Get's it.

This guy is awesome. As a business guy, his concepts are spot on, but it's his explanations that are golden. Ross Perot listens to Jim Hackett and dreams of what could have been. Favorite sentence:'transformation of a competitor getting ready to compete.' Made me realize that we haven't even seen the actual game day Harbaugh yet.
