Going to Rutgers

Submitted by GoBlueInNYC on

The wife and I are making the trip out to New Brunswick tomorrow for the game, taking NJ Transit from Penn Station. We were planning on heading in early to check out Rutgers's campus (we've been to New Brunswick before, but didn't make the trip over the river to campus), but with the forecast, we're thinking we might skip campus and just get in in time to get dinner before kick off. This is the wife's first Michigan game (second college football if you count watching Columbia and Cornell play a couple years ago), so hopefully it won't be too soul crushing.

I guess this is a general thread about going to the game. Things to check out on Rutgers's campus (weather permitting), restaurants to hit up before kick-off (crowd permitting), tail gating areas, transit advice, etc.

See if you can find the Michigan football team while you're there. I heard they're supposed to be in the area and I haven't seen them for quite a while. It'd be nice to know they still exist.

I will be staying at the Holiday Inn in South Plainfield/Piscataway if anyone's gonna be there.  I am headed down tonight from Maine and plan to get up early and see what the bar/resturant scene is and get some food and drinks and watch the afternoons games.  Last I checked the weather report is calling for rain until 5pm so I plan on staying inside the bars vs tailgaiting.  If anyone is staying at the Holiday Inn or wants to meet up for a beer with us let me know.

Not many. Rutgers fans are OK, but they do seem very enthusiastic about this rivalry. It could be that they smell blood in the water. That's one reason we should support our guys heartily.

I still think we'll see a lot more Michigan fans that that. Rutgers ticket dept. worked with local alumni groups from all their B1G opponents to arrange blocks of tickets. There are a lot of alumns in the NYC area and in the past 20 years, we have had incredibly few opportuntiies to see Michigan play without a flight or an all-day drive. Bad year or not, I bet there's a sizable Michigan turnout tomorrow.

Near campus (Easton Ave.):

Check out Stuff Your Face (This is where the stromboli was invented, and where Mario Batali got his cooking start. Also, the 64-ounce margaritas are famous).

The Harvest Moon, which is near the train station is a good place for a beer and dinner.

My favorite place is about five minutes from campus in Somerset (The Stagehouse Tavern).

I'm staying in NYC for the weekend and taking a Michigan fan bus to Piscataway for the game. We're getting dropped off at the orange RAC lot at about 3:45pm for tailgating, so stop by if any of you are near there.

I hope that they don't. You do realize that the outside world is watching this and thinking that our fanbase is INSANE and toxic, right? Even if firing Brandon is he right move, this is not the way to bring it about without inflicting unnecessary damage. Keep emailing Schlissel and the regents, refuse to donate, whatever, but let's try not to bring this program any further down. People are literally mocking us openly.

The only way to "clean house" is if the derision is so bad that the trustees and Schlissel can' no longer tolerated it.  It's not the fanbase that is "insane and toxic;" it's the AD.

I also think that on balance, DB should go.  But, I hate the perception of our school that it creates when our fans go to a game and are more concerned withe AD politics than the product on the field.  DB is not responsible for Derrick Green having poor vision.  DB is not responsible for our tire fire OL for 2 years running.  DB is not responsible for Gardner having poor decision making ability and Morris being woefully unprepared to play.  That's all on the coach.  Again, I still think that DB should go, but I think that he is probably taking blame for more than his share around here.  Blame him for the price gouging, the crappy home schedule this year the stupid-ass noodle, the skywriting, etc. and I agree.

In my opinion, given the perception of our fanbase - as viewed by both potential recruits and potential replacement coaches - I think that the DB issue is better dealt with by repeatedly emailing regents and Schlissel, but not by making it an issue when our team is on the field.

What we really need is another thread discussing the content of Schlissel's form email, our love / hate of Brandon, when Hoke will be fired, whether Jim Harbaugh wears boxers or briefs, or how much we miss RichRod. This is a general game thread for the upcoming game of the team that we all root for.

There will be one tomorrow.  So does that mean that people who want a break from the non-stop Fire Brandon / Fire Hoke / Hire RichRod / Hire Harbaugh crap shouldn't post a thread to discuss the actual game that will be played tomorrow.  Stupid!

My wife won't let me go.  Something about how she's fasting all day and the kids shouldn't have to suffer with a pagan dad who only cares about football. :(  I took the 6 year old boy to the Utah game, and he still is happy about Michigan football!  I'm either doing something right or just messing him up for the rest of his life.  Have fun!

I'm going. Taking the Professor Thom's bus from NYC at 5:00 because I have to work until 3:00. My wife is out of state so I have an extra ticket. Lower corner section 112, row 18. $70. Leave a reply here with your email if interested.

I'm going and now I wish I wasn't. But not because of the obvious reasons, (losing, AD, Hoke). I was going to keep supporting Team135. But when I woke up and read a current player feel the need to get on Twitter and call life-long fans 'irrelevant'. I can't support that. Whether he was obviously just frustrated or not.

I'm guessing I'm taking this far too seriously... But if someone thinks I and the God Awful amount of money I spend is irrelevant, why should I bother to support him?

I hope that's just one person's opinion and again maybe he's just upset and will apologize or take it back... But there's one player I will not be rooting for Saturday night. Albeit he won't get in the game anyway.

Wife and I are going.  Got good seats and driving down.... but where do I park?  I didn't buy one of those parking decals, but thought there would be some places to park for the day or some pay meters?  The stadium looks far away from most things on the map.  Any good ideas?

Not really being sarcastic, but Brandon should steal some totem or something from Pisacatawaya and tweet a photo of it on his desk in Ann Arbor.  If he could find a brown jug that'd be great because we sure could use a new one.  (okay, that last part was sarcasm.)

Honestly the RU campus is nothing special to see. Stadium is on Busch Campus which has nothing to see/do. College Ave campus has the grease trucks and some good Asian restaurants but that's about it.
