Fickell to Badgers

West gets a bit stronger today
November 27th, 2022 at 12:58 PM ^
Bad day to be a sports reporter in Wisconsin and find out your “sources” aren’t so strong…
Multiple sources informed the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel that as soon as the window closes, Leonhard will lose the interim tag.
https://www.outkick.com/wisconsin-badgers-hire-jim-leonhard-head-football-coach-report/
This was less than a week ago. And it’s not the type of thing that responsible journalists would go to the mat on without strong sourcing. So, have to wonder if the loss yesterday cost Leonhard the job.

Looks like OutKick outkicked their coverage.
(Also, fuck Clay Travis.)
November 27th, 2022 at 4:40 PM ^
I know that political biases are blinding, but read the quote. it says Milwaukee Journal Sentinel so...are you blaming them for quoting someone else's story?
November 28th, 2022 at 9:36 AM ^
Clay Travis has always been a giant douche clown. I don't care about his political affiliations.
November 27th, 2022 at 1:20 PM ^
Well he WILL lose interim tag. Highly doubt 1 game would be the tipping point. Wiscy must have bern talking to LF for at least a few weeks.
Double blow for the bucknut fans as some saw him as a replacement for Day.
November 27th, 2022 at 1:32 PM ^
The day that job opens up he's gone from wherever he's coaching currently, Wisconsin or somewhere else.
November 27th, 2022 at 1:51 PM ^
I’m not so confident that this isn’t going to be a major media flub in the making.
November 27th, 2022 at 3:52 PM ^
Loss yesterday and ruhle’s hiring at Nebraska
November 27th, 2022 at 12:40 PM ^
Deja Vu all over again.
November 27th, 2022 at 12:40 PM ^
This should go well.
November 27th, 2022 at 12:41 PM ^
Shit, glad they aren’t on the schedule for a few years, but we could be seeing them in the B1G championship.
November 27th, 2022 at 12:42 PM ^
Looks like some good coaching coming to the big ten. Of course I thought that when Purdue Nebraska and Minnesota made their last hires. That division needs players/recruits badly.

Didn't see the original post. Please lock and delete
November 27th, 2022 at 12:44 PM ^
This is different.
He is saying it is done and will be announced.
The other post is saying there is talks.
November 27th, 2022 at 12:45 PM ^
Nah. All double and triple posts get a free pass this weekend. 45-23 says so 🥳 Go Blue!!
November 27th, 2022 at 12:48 PM ^
So ..
POSBANG?
November 27th, 2022 at 12:43 PM ^
Well, I guess it's Urban or bust for THE loser of The Game this year. Poor, poor losers. 😁
November 27th, 2022 at 12:43 PM ^
Geez it’s still
kn the front page.
November 27th, 2022 at 12:43 PM ^
Wow, he is saying it is done.
November 27th, 2022 at 12:43 PM ^
Wow. Probably a good hire for Wisky.
November 27th, 2022 at 12:47 PM ^
Yeah, true.
November 27th, 2022 at 1:32 PM ^
Eh Im not as impressed as others are with Fickell.
November 27th, 2022 at 2:05 PM ^
I’m with you. Head-scratcher to me. Good recruiter? Sure. But he did well at Cincy because he got those “Tier-1” level players that were borderline and basically played with a Big Ten team against a MAC-level schedule… now he’ll have a Big Ten team, playing a Big Ten schedule.
Also, there were rumblings that if UW didn’t retain Leonhard, they’d risk losing Braelon Allen to transfer (and Michigan was talked about mid-season?)
November 27th, 2022 at 2:31 PM ^
I think they could see a lot of attrition. Nothing against Fickell but Wisky is a strange insular community of a football program, and if they went outside to hire a good coach (which is probably smart) I wouldn’t be surprised if some current players and recruits take it personally and look elsewhere.
November 27th, 2022 at 2:33 PM ^
Cincy fans wouldn't agree with you.
November 27th, 2022 at 4:44 PM ^
Sure, but that’s why I said I wasn’t as impressed as others…cincy fans are others. I think he’s earned a shot at a big job like a many who do well at lesser jobs. I just think he will be mediocre at this level and think Leonhard would be better overall.
November 27th, 2022 at 12:44 PM ^
Good hire on the surface. I still think Notre Dame might have missed the boat here.
November 27th, 2022 at 12:44 PM ^
Interesting. This suggests that OSU isn't looking to move on from Day anytime soon.
Fickell's got a nice résumé, but if it's true that OSU has been steering recruits to him that it doesn't have room for, he'll have to work a bit harder on that front now.
So what happens to Jim Leonhard?
November 27th, 2022 at 12:46 PM ^
I don’t think they get rid of Ryan Cooper and bring in Fickell. I’d assume Meyer would be the move IF they did anything. 2023 will be a big season for Ryan Day and his wonder boy Jim K!!
November 27th, 2022 at 12:49 PM ^
Day's definitely safe for next year. (I don't think OSU will ever actually fire Day, but at some point they might encourage him to look for a pro job.) But if I'm Fickell and I want that job, I'd stay at Cincinnati and see what happens at OSU the next couple of years. This suggests to me that someone told him not to bother.
November 27th, 2022 at 4:05 PM ^
Would anyone in the pros actually want him though?
November 27th, 2022 at 5:40 PM ^
Not as a HC
November 27th, 2022 at 1:07 PM ^
So what happens to Jim Leonhard?
Can't imagine he sticks around Madison considering Fickell has a defensive background. Wonder if he'll try to find a high-end P5 DC job or look at a G5 HC opening. Could Cincy give him a once-over?!
November 27th, 2022 at 12:48 PM ^
didn’t see that one coming.
i still say he’s overrated, fwiw…
November 27th, 2022 at 12:49 PM ^
I thought they were keeping what's his face?! I guess they're pretty fickle.
November 27th, 2022 at 12:49 PM ^
Good hire on paper but the fact remains that Cincy is a good place to recruit to in the AAC (it's no surprise that MSU started trending down when teams like Cincy and UK started picking up those kids OSU didn't want from the region who used to go to Dantonio) and Cincy's offense this year was pretty bad (SP+ 66th offensively, basically the same as Wisconsin's at 69). Fickell should get them to be better than they were the past couple of years but it's not a given that they'll replicate his success there.
November 27th, 2022 at 1:07 PM ^
Combine the Wisconsin OL reputation, some second tier Ohio talent, and manage to keep Leonhard and you can definitely see a consistent top 15ish program there.
November 27th, 2022 at 1:50 PM ^
I'm not sure Fickell would want to keep Leonhard; he's a defensive coach already and if I'm Leonhard I'm going to be pretty annoyed that I got passed over for a job because the garbage offense my former guy built fell apart. Wisconsin's defense took a small step back this year but even in their losses they played pretty well (they lost to Iowa 24-10 despite giving up a total of 146 yards of offense).
November 27th, 2022 at 2:02 PM ^
I don't see Leonhard hanging around after being passed up by another defensive-minded coach. He'll look for a top flight P5 DC job or a good G5 head gig.
November 27th, 2022 at 12:49 PM ^
Let's grab Braelon Allen.
November 27th, 2022 at 12:58 PM ^
Allen did confirm that he would be open to the portal if Leonhard didn’t get the job.
November 27th, 2022 at 12:51 PM ^
Bahahaha, OSU fans were planning on replacing Day with him less than 24 hours ago!!!
November 27th, 2022 at 1:14 PM ^
Fickell probably thought better of that
November 27th, 2022 at 12:53 PM ^
I can confirm. I've been told that the "deal is done" and "he's coming."
November 27th, 2022 at 12:53 PM ^
Interesting move for sure. Did not see that one coming.
November 27th, 2022 at 12:53 PM ^
Since this is sort of a double post, I'm copying part of a comment.
Sl OT: Do other programs have books like the John U Bacon series about Michigan football? there seems to be a lot of material but do they lack people willing to write about it? This Wisconsin situation, the Iowa nepotism situation, the Minnesota situation from Jerry Kill to PJ Fleck, so much stuff. Anyone aware of any books?
Are the media and alumni of those programs just more reticent?
November 27th, 2022 at 2:49 PM ^
Seven people would read a book about Wisconsin.
The Michigan books are popular because you either love them or hate them but are interested one way or another.
I also don't think JUB sells that many books.
