ESPN Postulates 3 big changes coming for Wolverines

I'm a believer that the more you see this stuff, the more likely it is to become real.  The court of media is very convincing (Just ask Winston) no matter if it is how it should be or not.  It's one thing to have blogs and sidebar sports sites saying Hoke has a hot seat.  When ESPN starts pushing the "It's a done deal" line things tend to sprial out of control.

MOD EDIT - the entire article plus what was behind the Insider link was posted in here. Let's try to leave some value for the authors themselves, please. - LSA

Bo isn't the "problem" but the factionalizism that developed around his legacy, IMO, most certainly is.

I have said this before but it is germain here.  Michigan had a chance to bring in new blood in 2005, when Carr wanted to retire and things were reaching a low point, but Michigan didn't.  They kept on going with the same stale insiders.  Then again in 2008, they had a chance to embrace the new, to bring in a new and talented coach to breath new life into the program.  Sadly, the faction(s) did everything it could to undermine RR.

It's amazing to see people who profess to love something do thing that hurt it so that they can remain at the helm.  They cling to their position(s) oblivious to the fact that they are the cancer that is rotting the house from within.

Bill Martin had NO play whatsoever when Carr said he wanted to retire in 2005.  That's what he begged Carr to stay.  Then again, he had NO plan in 2007.  I just hope that Brandon, and/or the Regents/admin. have a plan and don't just keep on keepin', then botch the next search.

I believe even Bo said that there was rot from within the program. As long as he was alive he was able to take care of it. But since he passed those who have taken his philosophy and "Bo-isms" have really just perverted them to keep their influence.

Lots of "they"s here.  Who are "they?"  Name some names, or stop with the vague innuendos.

RR failed due to a combination of his own failings and the fact that Carr was undercutting him.  There was no vast conspiracy of "they"s serving as a "cancer that is rotting the house from within."

I find Dave Brandon's position remarkably similar to RR's.  Both are men of skill but flawed by tone-deafness.  Rodriguez is succeeding by merit at Arizona, mostly because fans and supporters had such lower expectations.  Good on him, and may Brandon find a similar place to be successful.

You named the main culprit yourself Grumbler.  I don't have names, but I know they exist(ed) and were, in fact, in a conspiracy against RR because he was a "hick from the outside."  To add to that, the near complete lack of willingness by the fanbase to accept that Carr had left RR with a bare cupboard.  RR did what needed to be down to make the transition to a spread attack.  He wasn't supported in that, and was outright undermined by those that were supposed to be on the side of Michigan.

Which is why, as I said above, I think it's horrible that Carr kept making money off the AD when he actively undermined the programs much needed transition.  Further, didn't he help fuck up the Miles hire?

This is getting to be like a bad royal family power struggle.

doesn't really sound particularly knowlegeable about Michigan football.

One, it ignores the controversy and dissent a Miles offer would create--he is not universally beloved by all Michigan alums, former players etc.  The article acts as if the only reason he isn't here now was because he was somehow beyond our ability to get him in the past.

Two, the suggestion that we haven't been committed financially to the football program is beyong absurd.  As we all know--and newly unveiled building plans confirm--our athletic department has more money than God.  We don't have to pick bewteen football and academics.

Because of one and two, I can't trust the rest of the article's info.

Lane Kiffin has the Alabama offense rolling.

As we know, successful Alabama OC's can turn around ANY offense.

All three could happen, but I don't think any is set in stone at the moment, and their timetable (Hoke out, then Brandon) doesn't make sense.  And Miles?  Not going to happen.

What does this mean?

Coaches and administrators at other schools often talk to me about Michigan’s one-foot-in, one-foot-out approach to committing to football.

It seems to me like UM is very committed to football.

that if you want to have great academics then do that but then don't expect to garnish the best talent out there. Also they may be eluding to that they are saying that some athletes may get special privileges at Michigan. In nutshell saying we will take great talent gets the acedemic pass while ok talent must remain excellance in the classroom. Which I don't think we pick and choose with our athletes slack on acedemics.

What will happen to Miles is what happened the past two times: Everybody thinks he will come, everybody knows he is talking to Michigan, everyone at LSU panics, and in the end he stays at LSU and retire.

Provided you believe that he was ever actually offered the job either time. It can be argued that he actually had more interest than either Bill Martin or Dave Brandon did.

Doesn't mean I think he would have ended up here, but the problem was clearly on the Michigan end of the equation.

To see if we hear a peep from Brandon during the season. I don't see how he can endorse Hoke in any way shape or form with the kind of excrement we're seeing on the field right now. The only thing he can say is the program will be evaluated at the end of the season ... and that just leads to rampant speculation.

My one true concern is how many players bail if Hoke is fired? Coaching competence or lack thereof aside, the kids love him.

At this point if he comes out with the old vote of confidence speech no one will believe him. The only way to convince anyone that Hoke is not doomed would be a contract extension. Can you imagine the response to that? Would an actual riot break out?

If all three of those things happen, and the first two are looking more likely, I hope they don't happen in that order. If there is a new AD, you would like to have them pick the coach. I am not sure I trust the new president with picking an AD yet though, we might be better with Brandon for a bit.

And has no known track record of knowing anything. Michigan has a new president who isn't a sports guy and Brandon is crapping money (look at all of the non revenue capital improvements).

Hoke may be fired, but Brandon stays. The author is just guessing about Gardner, because he was replaced by Shane (so it's logical).

It's one guy, not "ESPN", and I doubt he knows much.  For starters the offense did score 3 points yesterday - dude could at least check the basic facts.

Who's going to fire Brandon?  the president just got here and knows nothing about all this.

Besides the fact that all of us are going to want to murder him the first time he makes one of his patented gameclock gaffs, he offers exactly what we have now: great D, terrible offense. How do we see this being an improvement?

If we Les Miles didn't go to Michigan, he'd never be considered
