DJ Carton transferring from OSU
Probably related to the mental health issues he had that made him sit out the end of this year at OSU. Unfortunate for him and hopefully this helps him out mentally.
Would assume he would look to go closer to home with Iowa and Iowa State being big suitors. If he goes to Iowa and gets an immediate eligibility waiver (very possible by going closer to home with documented health issues), Iowa could be really good next year if Garza returns. Even if they don't play defense.
Hope everything works out for him. I was never a fan of his school choice, but it took balls for him to stand up the way he did and step back from the game for his own personal health.
Best of luck, DJ.
but it took balls for him to stand up the way he did and step back from the game for his own personal health.
Did we ever hear anything specific about his mental health issue? I assumed it was some sort of depression or other mental illness. Dylan Burkhardt at UMHoops seems to imply that he was just homesick or just didn’t like it at OSU.
Of course. I'm homesick, don't like the OSU program, soooo how can I transfer with immediate eligibility? Mental health issues, unprovable. That'll work!
We need to make all or none eligible to transfer, get rid of the games.
Iowa makes the most sense here
Iowa's likely to be really good whether DJ goes or not. And Garza almost has to return, unless he is that anxious to move to Europe. He could be a Naismith contender next year, but he has no role in the NBA.

If Garza returns (very likely), Iowa could be a top 5 to 7 team and maybe the preseason B1G favorite
Hopefully he goes to Iowa State. Garza, Carton, Wieskamp etc would make a pretty damn hard team to beat
Why is this getting downvoted? And why doesn't anyone believe Garza will be drafted in the 1st round? He's got game, and can shoot the 3.
He's 21 and isn't a good defensive player. He'll have a role in the NBA but I'd be shocked if it was as a first rounder. Probably the 40-50 range.
Frank Kaminsky ended up as a top 10 pick in the draft so you never know.
Michael Jordan drafted him...so he probably should’ve went in the 40-50 range
Garza already said he's coming back
Duane Washington had won the job. I hope he gets healthy band happy and finds a good spot.
Fuck osu.
Carton is a PG and Washington is a 2/3. They weren't competing for the same position. Also Carton was a 5 star recruit in his freshman year who outperformed Washington in every way except TO% (higher TS% and EFG%, higher 2P and 3P %'s, better AST rate and equal rebounding rate). Implying Washington had anything to do with a productive 5 star freshman PG leaving is wildly wrong.
Carton was basically splitting point minutes just behind Walker while starting at the two I thought. Washington picked up that role but was running more of the two but also picking up some of the point minutes
You’re right in that Washington’s success may have had nothing to do with Carton transferring and DWs opportunity came after Carton stepped away.
I know this is a special case, but OSU has had a ton of transfers under Holtmann
Musa Jallow, Micah Potter, Jaedon LeDee (I have no idea who this is), Derek Funderburk, and now Carton
Two of those guys are starters on other high major programs and I imagine Carton will be too
Musa Jallow didn't transfer. Funderburk was thrown off the team before he played a game.
Carton to IU so he can play for Belein.
I'd throw in Nebraska and Hoiberg.
I wish him nothing but the best, and I hope wherever he lands is a healthy spot for him.
His situation reminds me of Trevon Grimes from a couple years ago. He was a 4* WR who transferred after his freshman year (I believe his mom was sick), and he was granted eligibility. Nothing but love and respect from Buckeye nation.
