Could Crisler ever host NCAA Tournament games?
i see other schools like Kentucky, Louisville, OSU etc. host NCAA first and second round games at their arenas. Point blank: could that ever be done at Crisler?
It's a world class arena that is a great place to watch a basketball game. A thousand times better than Big Lots Arena in Columbus.

The Palace ever hosting another NCAA tournament game once the new Wings arena is built.

Why would they have to remove the ice? I don't know of any arena, with a rink, that removes the ice. They just put insulated panels over the ice to host basketball or any other event that doesn't need the ice.

The Palace is nice, but the new Wings arena will be more centrally located. Also, it will be right next to downtown within an entertainment district(connected by a streetcar). I really hope Michigan ends up playing a tournament game there in 2018.

a centrally located entertainment district with a streetcar system
are you Chuck Mangione? because you're making me feel so good

that it's totally charming!

It only has a 13,751 seat capacity. I'm sure the NCAA wants games that can fit at least over 15,000, if not closer to 18,000.

Actually, it's been at 12,707 since the renovations were completed.

For trusting Google and it's insta result instead of looking at the U of M source.

I figured it was small. It seems everytime i see the overhead or panned out crowd shot during a home game, it just looks like Crisler seats about 5,000. Compared to other arenas i see while watching college bball ( except for Camron Indoor) they just look so much bigger than Crisler. I've never been to a game there, but on tv it just doesn't look like it seats that many people. What to most major college arenas seat? 16,000 t0 18,000 i would guess??

Crisler is a bit smaller than the norm but not by as much as you think. Here are all of the B1G arenas by capacity (although they have our old capacity, so I'm sure if all of the others are accurate).
Generally speaking, the schools with really big basketball arenas, like Kentucky (23K), Louisville (22K) or UNC (20K) are basketball schools - they don't make that much from football, relatively speaking, so they need to rake it in in basketball. In contrast, USC just built a new basketball arena that only seats 10K.

Look at #5, #8, and #31
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_basketball_arenas_by_capacity
Crisler holds less than 14k.
Not saying it couldn't happen, but it would require the NCAA to knowingly sacrifice a good amount of money.

"but it would require the NCAA to knowingly sacrifice a good amount of money"
so 0.00000000% then

At some of those first and second round games barely half the arena is full. March Madness makes their money by selling the TV rights. Ticket sales are just a tiny percent of the NCAA's profit on March Madness.

Why Crisler when you have the Palace and Ford Field nearby?
February 24th, 2015 at 8:49 PM ^
And I think the NCAA prefers not to have on-campus arenas if it can avoid them. Every time Columbus has gotten to host, it's never been in Value City Arena, but the Blue Jackets' arena instead.

Posted above, but the unnamed new Detroit arena will in fact be hosting in 2018.

The NCAA only cares about money and the lost revenue from Crisler's low seat capacity is inconceivable to the NCAA. Crisler's atmosphere and facilities are top-notch but the NCAA is just too greedy.

there is parking, seats, and a court. So yeah glaven.

What? Neither Crisler nor Breslin have ever hosted a tournament game.

In men's basketball? I don't think so.
If Wikipedia is to be trusted, neither arena is on the list of host sites (although Breslin's predecessor, Jenison Fieldhouse, hosted once).
