Cooking with weed products

Submitted by VinegarStrokes on June 26th, 2020 at 6:41 PM

I’m curious if anyone has any experience cooking with THC laced products.  Last week, a friend sent us a giant fruit box from Harry & David's as a thank you for something we helped with.  So naturally, I decided to melt down several Kiva bars over a double boiler to drench the fruit in.   Needless to say it was fantastic but we were destroyed.

I always see a 2000mg tub of cannabutter at the dispensary I frequent but always chicken out and don’t buy it.  I’m aware baking is an exact science but we are more of the amateur chef types. We use butter as a dish starter or finisher and use it by “feel”, rather than measurement.  The fact that it’s hard to dose out random scoops of the product is what scares me.  Does anyone have experience using this?

I don't know anything about cooking with weed but I do see that Michigan made CHET Holmgren's final seven so celebrate with the mind altering substance of your choice .

I have come to learn that the best use of THC is as an accompaniment to your meal, not part of it. Think of it as an aperitif or a digestif, so much can go wrong by mixing it into a several corse meal.  Think of Steve Martin in Dirty Rotten Scoundrels...”cork and the fork”

one mistake, and your guests may be literally on the floor.  I tried this once and had to find sleeping arrangements for two couples who were couch locked.

I ate an edible tonight and then spent $175 on a vintage 1984 away Chet Lemon Tigers jersey.  So I am obviously not great at making good decisions.  Had to have it

I used to make green butter from ABV herb (after water curing,) but what's left over basically gives you a REAL couch lock high.  I now just give the leftovers to a friend who enjoys it more.

If you haven't figured out that going by "feel" is a bad idea & quite wasteful, consider the possibility that going by "feel" is a bad idea & quite wasteful.  Measure & take it easy.  It's better to eat one cookie & an hour later needing to eat another than to eat one and have someone say "Dude, you ate the whole thing?  I have to break mine into quarters or I cannot function."

I don't follow your question nor do I know what butter as a dish starter or finisher means. If you want to know your dose, then measure it--preferably by weight. If that somehow doesn't appeal to your nature as an amateur chef, c'est la vie. If you get too high I suggest you watch Mulholland Drive or for something shorter Hot Dog Hands.

I get that you hate anything approaching the scientific method graduating from community high, but the answer to how to control a dose from a large, controlled dosed product is to measure it. I know that may interfere with one's sensibilities, but this is a Michigan blog not a townie blog. How do you like them snarky apples?

I get you don't like baking but just follow a recipe.

With weed butter and baking it's pretty easy to do the math on roughly how much is in each cookie/bar/slice of jalapeño cornbread/whatever. Take it slowly eating while you calibrate your tolerance.

Putin adding nothing. There are other threads to add useless comments on. I swear, some people here think they have to get their unwanted snark on every thread.

someone throws up a thread to get some actual engagement with other members, but noooo, everyone with nothing to actuallly say has to comment “don’t do drugs”

under the OLD point system, there Was no +1 for being a snarky dick

Ok, my bad, guess the random Saved By the Bell reference is a good answer to the question posed by the OP.

i know when to quit on a Friday when I’m in my cups and feeling Froggy.   I am realizing this is a good time to say good night before I make history and have to start an apology thread tomorrow morning. Peace

Not so.

https://www.theonion.com/dea-chief-winners-occasionally-use-drugs-1819564423

WASHINGTON, DC—In a surprise announcement with wide-ranging implications for U.S. narcotics policy, Drug Enforcement Administration director Thomas Constantine acknowledged Monday that some winners "may occasionally" use drugs.

"Apparently," said Constantine, addressing reporters at Justice Department headquarters, "contrary to the DEA's long-standing conviction, drug use may not be limited solely to the domain of losers. It appears that some successful Americans have experimented with illegal narcotics, as well."

So I don't cook with it myself but I have a couple of friends who make some very potent candies.

Think pink starburst but with 100mg of thc in it

Just be careful. Honestly, eating pot is either lovely or leads to great and long lasting discomfort. Last time I ate a homemade brownie (I had 1 bite the size of a six sided die),  I was sick for 2 days. and no I am not kidding. And I have smoked and eaten pot for many many years.

It is my STRONG opinion that you either smoke the shit or buy professionally made gummies that are carefully measured and divided. Start with 10mg if those with you are new, 20mg for experienced people.

This seems about right.

Related: I have family in Portland and every time I visit I look around (as best I can) on the WWW to see if any of the abundant culinary talent up there has explored the OP's question in a restaurant or food cart/truck setting. So far: Nothing. I have the sense that edibles (gummies and whatnot) are all that's available.

I seem to have a pretty good crop of quack grass and nut sedge going. Not sure how they'd cook up. Thought I'd just hit them with some 2,4 D

Look online to find the temperature where decarboxlzation occurs. If the temp goes higher, the thc is destroyed. At the right temp, it is activated. This is the most important aspect, that it remains usable - the rest is about balancing the portion per serving, dosage, preference for what you want to eat, etc.
It is a vague question, could you specify a little more what you want to know/ are trying to do?

Ive been in the industry for a number of years so I can help you out. We can discuss this in an easier format too if you’d prefer.

You’re best off using a distillate and adding a dab or two to a cookie. Cooking with THC is not the best idea. The heat (especially baking) will destroy it. The distillates are super potent and you can’t even taste it (as long as they didn’t add terpines back into it) and it’s already decarboxylated so it’s effective orally.

If you decide to cook with it, you’ll have an incredibly inconsistent edible (nearly impossible to dose). So you’re kind of vulnerable to overdoing it. Stick with the standardized stuff IMO.

Excellent advice and just as I figured.   It certainly isn’t an every day thing for us.   It’s just a fun way to mitigate being home all the time and getting fucked up with my wife in a fun way while eating good food.

I live in Newport Beach so every major dispensary delivers to me.  And the products available are mind blowing.   Incredible quality, potency, and taste.

Could not disagree more.  I have had excellent results cooking w/homemade butter, making consistently delicious and easily dosed items.  I’ve made it with flower and also w/stems and stalks from a high quality legal grower.

If you are making the butter, put your MJ in a coffee grinder and chop it very fine. If very fine, you can leave it in whatever you are cooking, or strain it and make two items, one w/clear green butter and one w/grounds.  If stalks and stems, you can try chopping it or grinding it, but it’s very woody and tough, but if you persevere, you can get excellent butter. But the stalks and stems must be discarded — too tough.

If making butter, simmer covered on lowest heat for 24 hours.  Barely bubbling at all is the right simmer level.  Beware, it’ll stink.  Make sure there is plenty butter and try not to take the lid off.

As for recipes, google “marijuana ginger cookies”.  Many choices.  I prefer mine crispy and this is easily done.  They are easily the best and they will taste a bit of marijuana but not too much.  If cooking buds, I strain and use the cooked MJ to make power bars.  Add a little extra chocolate and fruit.

As for dosing, just go slow until you establish your THC levels, meaning, COMMIT to eating ONLY a 1/4 cookie for an ENTIRE afternoon and see how it goes.  Don’t eat more, or smoke, vape or drink.  Wait, wait, wait.  People get in trouble when they get impatient and eat more, risking a big kick.  If results aren’t what you hoped for, the next time eat more/less and wait an ENTIRE afternoon.

With patience, you can get a very nice, consistent, pleasant and long-lasting buzz.  But make sure if you share, stick to your results and be very clear w/your friends as to recommended dose.  I’ve had plenty of experiences of “I really should’ve listened to you...”. It’s not very much fun when you a properly dosed and your friend is hallucinating— unless that’s what they were after and you’ve taken precautions.

If I wanted to try an edible for the first time with a super low dose, what would you suggest? Something that could help with anxiety.

Go to a dispensary and ask questions.  You can get candies that are very low.  Usually the “bud tenders” can give really good advice and suggestions.

But please make sure you LOCK UP any edibles if you have kids, who won’t know the difference and might get a little too “happy” when they find their parents’ stash of gummy bears.

A home safe is a good investment.  Or a locked tackle box will do as well.

I’d say 2 to 5 mg would be where I’d start if I were you, depending on your history with cannabis.  I know it’s been said, but it’s an hour or 2 before you redose if the effect isn’t what you want, especially if you are taking it on an empty stomach (it takes longer to absorb if you haven’t eaten).  I’ve heard that CBD can bring you down so if you’re nervous you can get a bottle of CBD oil and take some if you feel too stoned.

Also, it’s nice to see a fellow Saginaw kid. AHHS 2001 here.

As someone that has made more THC infused gummies than I even know the count of, I would say just go to a dispensary and buy those it's truly the safest way. I make 15 mg gummies. 15 mg seems to be the sweet spot where if you've never tried a gummy before in your life, eat 1/4 and you'll be OK. If you smoke cannabis, but never had a gummy try half. If you're experienced with both eat one. I personally take two, and maybe another a couple hours later and that works well. Mine are also made with high quality distilate.

Another thing I love is 1:1 THC:CBD gummies. If you ask me CBD on it's own is snake oil. But CBD with THC is a recipe for a relax into sleep.

With that said and to your OP butter just isn't worth it anymore. It's too unpredictable even when you measure it imo. It also tastes terrible imo. The great thing about distilate gummies is they taste like candy and 0 THC. Which does make them incredibly dangerous, but be an adult... I've actually had people ask me to make them non-THC gummies just because they like the candy so much. So, that's what I would recommend.

I have carefully read all the messages and can conclude that it is necessary to check the addition of weeds to the food. Of course, I've tried a lot of edible THC products from the online store at this link https://weedzy.co.uk/, and I'm very happy that these guys are doing their job very well, because all purchases remain confidential, and weed delivery is very fast.
