CC: Mark Richt revisited - Nebraska Candidate?

Submitted by gobluesasquatch on

Mark Richt has been mentioned a few times in regards to the Nebraska opening given he grew up in the state. Given that tomorrow's meeting between Hoke and Hackett should leave us with an opening, and UGA's loss to Georgia Tech on Saturday, this might be a serious candidate for Michigan to consider.

Reasons for Richt

135-48 overall record

78-34 SEC record

6 first place finishes in the SEC East since 2001

2 SEC Titles

2-1 in BCS bowl games

Runs a clean program

Strong opponent of oversigning

Seems to get more out of less during his tenure at Georgia

Innovative and successful OC while at FSU during the 90s

Reasons against:

1-5 vs Meyer

Doesn't have a ton of marquee wins behind his name

Doesn't seem to win the big one in the SEC

Reasons he might leave:

Worn out by fan base that doesn't understand how good they have it

Worn out by boosters who keep trying to pay kids

Easier to win B1G title than SEC title

Michigan > Georgia (college programs)

Two words: Nick Saban

Reasons he would stay:

SEC east is pretty weak

14 years at Georgia and spent much of his life in the south

Georgia is a talent rich state, next to talent rich Florida

Two words: Urban Meyer

I don't believe we are getting Harbaugh. Miles is just jerking our chain to get a pay raise, and why would he come? No one wants Schiano. A MACtion coach could be the next Bo, or might be the next Hoke - a lot of risk. He's also not a high profile coordinator without any head coaching experience (Narduzzi). Honestly, who else is out there that might be remotely in play and has a winning track record - Todd Graham?

When will Nebraska just offer the job to (hire) Frost? So we can just see that this a one horse race. They refuse to lose their 1997 QB, and Pelini wasn't good against ranked teams (.333 winning pct) so they made a change before anyone else offers Frost.

So Nebraska just fired a guy that has trouble winning big games...and is considering another guy that has trouble winning big games?

As to him coming here...big fat no. If you haven't realized we are going against of the best coaches in the country at Ohio State and Michigan State. Unless you're okay with OSU getting closer and closer to tieing the series, he isn't the guy.

Record below.  Like Lloyd he has a lot of 3-4 win seasons offset by a few 2 loss seasons.  I will say 2002 is akin to our 97 season.  Yes they didnt win the NC but 1 damn loss, that's a margin of error.  He had some rought years in 09 and 10 and again in 13.

This is almost identical to Stoops in that he has been in 1 place a long time and people look at Saban and want that.   I think Stoops has been a step above what Richt did but really if you put Lloyd in Georgia, Richt in Oklahoma, and Stoops at UM for the past 15 years I bet they all pretty much do the same thing within 3-5 wins over 10+ years.  All very good coaches.  None are Saban.  No one is.

Richt is a native of Nebraska hence the connection.  You'd basically get the same type of coach in terms of on field record in Les Miles who also happens to love the university.  He is probably not as "clean" as Richt and is older but if offered by UM today probably wouldl be a much easier fish to land - it's pretty much a wash.

Mark Richt would do very well in big ten since he runs Georgia with pretty much same like talent there. He is not like some of the sec guys, he runs a clean program and he develops players pretty good.

If Mark Richt was ever going to leave Georgia he would've done it by now. The only way he's leaving Athens is if he retires or gets fired.

Besides, as good a coach as he is, he always seems to have at least one head scratcher game per year. His team this year was Jekyll and Hyde. They crushed Auburn and shut out Missouri, and then inexplicably lost to South Carolina and got taken to the woodshed by a hapless Florida team.

Scott frost is a name to keep an eye on. Young with a lot of energy And knows how to coach offense. I know he could recruit well here and would surround himself with wise coordinators.

Top tier either Harbaugh and Miles

Next tier Stoops, Mullins or Patterson and I would put Richt right in there even though I know this is a Richt to Nebraska thread.

Do the right thing and come home JIMMY!!!

about this slowly sinking ship that has been Michigan football for the last seven years all have the same plot. That the captain of this sinking vessel is Llyod Carr. From the Miles and Carr cheating rumors to the RR being undermind rumors. Oh wait, where there is smoke there is fire. I have herd to many of these stories to not think that this whole mess is because of Carr.

I love the educator and almost too honest/gentlemanly guy he was as a coach and man while our HC but it's no secret he had a loud voice (even when not saying anything, especially in some cases) and many loyal to his beliefs in power undermining things. First, it's been refuted but two players still insist Carr told them without solicitation it would be best to transfer rather than play for RR's system. He never once publicly comes to his aid to help call off the dogs. He created a rift with Harbaugh by hiring a bust QB recruit over him when the QB coach position was open. He got in the way of one hire to ruin all chances and comes out of Bolivia for the first time in 3 years to publicly endorse the next hire.....oh, and he did nothing to break up the numerous factions working in his legacies name to get a "Michigan Man" back. Remember, Braylon played for "Lloyd Carr's Michigan" and it was Carr guys that absolutely helped stretchgate happen. Aww, shucks! We forgot to ever fill out time slips so it's now a disgruntled Carr recruit's word against yours. Sowwy! I could go on but I won't because I like Lloyd....actually....final one: Waiting until his final game to actually, ya know, put his NFL laden roster in positions to succeed in a modern offensive attack. That was bittersweet. Oh, and Carr talking so much shit about RR that before he took over most of Carr's staff hated him to the point of giving sarcastic interviews for a job. Good thing Fred just wanted to be at Michigan. **btw, not a RR apologist, I wish him well but it wasn't ever going to work out here for many reasons**. Those are just facts and heavily backed up rumor. Yet, I like Carr around the kids with no axe to grind.

He never once publicly comes to his aid to help call off the dogs.

He did. Three and Out quotes him defending RichRod a couple of times.  Granted, Bacon implies that Carr didn't do this often enough, but to say that he never defended him is not true.

and it's an especially hollow complaint these days considering he had fuck all to say in defense of Hoke, who was his own guy. You'd think people would have realized after 20 years that Lloyd just really, really doesn't like talking about anything. He's essentially being maligned for not being Bo and having his own TV and radio shows.

I really don't think Nebraska is ever going to try a pro style guy ever again. It failed so badly with Callahan, and their glory days are so tied up with option football and being something unique offensively.

One of the things I always liked about Richt is the very thing that seems to irritate folks in the Georgia fanbase, or some of them anyway. He tries to run the program with an integrity that seems scarcely replicated within his own conference, butting up against the prevailing culture of the SEC. He would probably fit well enough in the Big Ten, but as others have mentioned, it seems like if he wanted to make a jump like that, he would have done it already - at least, if he wanted to make it willingly.

...about Mark Richt.  Obviously, he is fine coach with a strong overall record at Georgia.

But his record at Georgia is actually still two notches below the level that Michigan should aim to achieve.

What is Michigan really looking for?  Someone who has a decent chance of beating Urban Meyer at least 50% of the time and getting to 10 or more wins more often than not.

And judging by Richt's long track record at Geogia (in 14 years four 1-2 loss seasons and six  seasons with 4 or more losses), we can fairly conclude that he has a high floor, but also a ceiling that is below beating Urban Meyer 50% of the time and getting to 10 wins enough.

There is no reason to think that Richt would do better at Michigan than he has done at Georgia.

So, if it would satisfy you to get back to 9-3, then Richt might be fine with you.

But if instead you are looking for a coach that will have a higher ceiling (beat Urban Meyer, and only 12, 11, or 10 wins is considered a 'good' year), then you have to cross Richt off the list.

For me, it is better to gamble on someone with a shorter record but also some chance of a higher ceiling than Richt.

But I guess the best argument in favor of Richt is that he has a high floor.  Just as he would not do any better at Michigan than at Georgia, he also would not do any worse.

Nono Ono ononono. Have lived in Athens for 16 years. People are ready for him to go because he'd rather be a youth pastor than a football coach and it's obvious.
