Camp rumor: Gentry getting reps @ TE

Submitted by greensborohill1 on
on the Huge Show this afternoon Chris Balas said that he heard out of camp that Zack Gentry is taking snaps at TE. He said it was to get more play makers on the field and that it was not a permanent move.

Guh. I mean, I liked getting Gentry partly because of QB didn't work out, you could use him as possibly a TE. But in his first week of his freshman year? Keep him at QB, redshirt him, and see what you have on 1-2 years. After that, think about switching.

I have a feeling they are planning to redshirt him regardless. It seems like Harbaugh is able to find these sleeper types because he tries them at positions no one else would think to. I realize that Gentry was a highly rated recruit but he probably does stuff like this with the majority of his players. Think of it as due diligence.

Sure they would.  If they know he won't see the field at QB this fall, there likely aren't enough QB reps to go around, so the alternative is to have him sit on his ass all practice.  Since we have fewer TEs than QBs, you give him some reps there to a) see how he fares for down the road, b) help him see being a receiver from the other side, and c) get his blood pumping.

It's likely that Gentry has played only QB for most of his football career, but it's possible that he has more upside at TE, so doing some experimenting there doesn't mean anything.

The guy can move and is huge, so why not put him over there and see what happens for now? Question his blocking but it'd still be interesting to see him there.

1. Switch to TE

2. Learn the routes and timing of TEs

3. Switch back to QB now with intimate understanding of the TE position of which the offense will heavily revolve around

4. ???

5. Profit

Just another example of Harbaugh thinking outside the box. I trust that he will get the best out of each player regardless of position.
