I would assume Wheatley Jr would be getting more reps at TE than Gentry anyways and is probably going to be one of the true freshmen to play.
August 10th, 2015 at 8:41 PM ^
heard they are doing a postition swap and giving Wheatley Jr. a shot at QB.
August 10th, 2015 at 7:54 PM ^
They wouldn't be giving him reps at tight end if they were planning on redshirting him.
August 10th, 2015 at 7:59 PM ^
Sure they would. If they know he won't see the field at QB this fall, there likely aren't enough QB reps to go around, so the alternative is to have him sit on his ass all practice. Since we have fewer TEs than QBs, you give him some reps there to a) see how he fares for down the road, b) help him see being a receiver from the other side, and c) get his blood pumping.
It's likely that Gentry has played only QB for most of his football career, but it's possible that he has more upside at TE, so doing some experimenting there doesn't mean anything.

is that he could also work as a TE for the demonstration squad. In any case, Jay Riemersma always said the best thing that ever happened to him was tearing the rotator cuff of his throwing arm.

If you're going to redshirt him, why not try him out at both TE and QB? Perhaps he'll be more useful to the team in one slot or the other, and it'll be good to figure that our early in his career rather than pigeon-holing him into QB and never knowing what else he can do.

Thanks. I like how on the one against Penn State the announcer says "Probably a planned play!"

The lack of the transcontinental was one of the travesties of the Hoke era. And with Denard and Devin at QB! It should be in the Michigan coach's contract that there will be one transcontinental a year.

1. Switch to TE
2. Learn the routes and timing of TEs
3. Switch back to QB now with intimate understanding of the TE position of which the offense will heavily revolve around
4. ???
5. Profit

I believe Jay Riemersma is the canonical example of this.

A nine year NFL career as a TE isn't too bad for a guy recruited here to play QB.

I'd like to see a local guy, whether it's Malzone or Morris, QB the team the next few years.

Its just a nice thing when a local kid succeeds with the hometown team. You wouldn't let that dictate playing time, but assuming equl talent levels, I'd rather have a local guy.

Hmmm and Hmmm...maybe a tight end will be our best QB this season??? I'm secretly hoping that the australian punter dude gets a few snaps behind Glasgow. Dang, now it's not a secret!
